Some notes
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

Yeah! Imagine where Doom would be if he was just called Doom Guy. Oh wait....
Not sure what your point is. Doom Guy is a generic hero that nobody gives a fuck about, which is exactly what I was talking about. I never said not having a named protagonist with a full story arc made a game bad, I just said it leaves me unfulfilled. Doom Guy, as a main character, will never compete with Kratos or Nathan Drake. Game makers are making these cost-saving stories with cardboard cutout characters and nobody is saying anything about it.

May be just me, but I’d rather just play a game. If I really want a “story” I’d watch a movie or read a book.
A basic story and point me where to go, I’m good.

If I want to know the story in a video game, I'll watch a youtube video about it.

I got into Anthem! Loaded into a mission with 2/3 guys in the party, then after waiting awhile the other DC'd. Joined back on them, customized my armor while we looked for another, and then we all froze at the loading screen. Now they're back in and I'm stuck on the title screen.

I did get to fly around some while we waited and pick some flowers. So far, so good. I'm not disappointed yet. Even if the endgame is lacking, that's a pretty easy thing to fix as the game goes on. If you like loot progression games and Iron Man cosplay, as long as the actual release has better server structure it should scratch that itch.

EA should have just let FIFA make them a billion dollars rather than thinking they could make every game sell $500m in microtransactions. I just know they're going to be "disappointed" with the sales, but I hope they keep a solid staff working on updates and new content.

But there are dialogue choices and your character isn't mute. And since the hub world isn't shared they can actually have a meaningful story for your protagonist while also having multiplayer fun. Think instanced story sections in Star Wars the Old Republic.

I really don't think this is ever the case, and very rarely if it is. I think there are other factors in play that lead to bland characters, stuff like the Far Cry protagonists or many non-Sam Fischer characters in the Tom Clancy setting, which really comes down to trying to appeal as broadly as possible. Those blank slates in WRPGs I mentioned take a LOT more time and effort to make work since there are usually a lot of different directions you can take them that drastically affect the overall story, dialogue, and other characters.

Specifically with Doom Guy, in the old days it was a design philosophy. While Id Software did have a narrative guy that did come up with a story for the original game, Carmack had more say and hit us with the classic quote below, which he more recently has amended. The Doom reboot is a both a continuation of the old games, and more importantly a modern take on the formula so they kept the legacy of the character as it should be, while building a fairly lore rich setting around him that is optional. That said, Carmack is a smart guy but his opinion isn't law, and the industry of today hasn't really fallen in with his line of thinking overall.

https://twitter.com/id_aa_carmack/status/1030511549688016899

Personally, I'd say Doom Guy tops Nathan Drake as I've never felt he was that memorable compared to pretty much any of his contemporaries. Drake is essentially a modern Indiana Jones that took 4 games to finally get much character development. Doom Guy has pretty much 0 personality in the old games but being around so long his personality was formed by the community, which was then clearly built into the new series, perfectly represented to any long term fans of the series. He might not have dialogue but you can definitely feel what he's thinking during any exchange just from his body language. Kratos is a different story, he's had a lot more going on in general, and really took it it to the next level with the reboot. Doom Guy is probably the most influential overall too, with pretty much all space marines being inspired by him to some degree.

Is the hub of Anthem considered “getting in” to the game? Got there and talked to the people I was supposed to then tried to launch a mission. It sat on the loading screen for the mission for 15 minutes. No messages about matchmaking or anything.

Was out most of the night so too late to mess around with it any more.

So today should be my 13th day... go do the daily set and go to my “bonus” and it says I just unlocked the 5 day bonus... scroll up, it says 13... tomorrow will be day 1 again.

The rewards page is so screwed up for me, ive never seen the 14th day.

Holy fuck the puzzle in the Anthem mission is obtuse. I looked up the answer and it still took a while. Match colors/shapes around each thing. They're in different places and randomized apparently.

Apparently anybody who recently had an ea trial has access to anthem.I just launched it to see if I was able to play it and I'm in the game.Only time I ever did a trial was for BFV for 6k Bing points.

Put an hour into playing Anthem and then put 15 seconds into canceling my preorder . I’ll buy it in 3 months when it’s $20 and it runs better than 10 frames a second in firefights.

Yeah, on that stream I was watching Seagull was floating between 55 and 70, and I'm pretty sure he has a beast PC since he was a pro Overwatch player and usually plays shooter over 150 FPS. It didn't seem that optimized and they're only targeting 30 on consoles including X and Pro.

They're prioritizing 4K over framerate according to a lead dev here. Seems like a dumb choice for this kind of game, but Bioware is new to it I guess.

After thinking about it, I think a bunch of issues are coming from using Frostbite. Yes they've done open world before, but movement speed is much higher than other games on the engine so I think that's where all the loading screens are coming. The larger locations have way more detail on them, things like trees and enemies, so that's probably leading to 30 FPS. Verticality may be causing some issues too, being able to fly at all times is something new for the engine, the closes being the vehicles in Battlefield and Battlefront.

Just listened to an interview/preview w/ Bioware on What's Good Games podcast. They're targeting 4k/30fps but said the final version should support 1080p/60fps or something similar. This IS a preview build and not a final product. Still, a month from launch, you'd think things would be optimized more.

Re: Frostbite, in the interview the Bioware person also says the combat is heavily influenced by Andromeda (the best part of that game) but it's disappointing to know Frostbite is still in use. It sounds like they tried to salvage the cost of Andromeda's development hell into a modified engine for Anthem.

Has anyone who preordered Anthem on Bone been able to get your friend passes? I've already played the demo but the EA website keeps telling me the codes aren't available until I play it.

Frostbite on every game has been a mandate at EA for a few years now. The new CEO wanted this done, presumably to save licensing costs, but really I think it's been nothing but trouble outside of DICE and to a lesser degree the sports games.

About the 60 FPS situation, that article is only 5 days old and it sounds like they're looking into it but it isn't a high priority at the moment.

It will be interesting what happens with Frostbite going forward though. EA really bought into DICE a few years ago bringing the engine in house and top level DICE employees to the executive level. The top DICE guy left this fall after the Battlefront fiasco and hints that their Battlefield V would be dead on arrival. Job listings linked to Respawn and their new Star Wars game mention Unreal Engine 4 so their already might be some leeway on everything having to be on Frostbite. Personally I just wish EA would fix the defenseman AI in NHL on the penalty kill some year, but yeah that's never happening.

Dear backlog,

fuck you. I'm getting all the Ridder trophies in Arkham Knight. Why? Because fuck you. I'm stupid and am terrible with time management.

I just beat the Motral Kombat X story, fatalities and x-rays with all characters.... now on to everyone's 10 hit combo. I do at least like watching the little achievement tracker screen go up.

Now that I unlocked the Storm class I'm having a lot more fun. The boss that was a struggle before I was able to defeat easily with the different abilities.

I was wondering about Respawn. I don't remember if they were already working on Star Wars before being bought. Titanfall 1 and 2 actually run on a modified Source Engine so it's a bit surprising to see them change engines and not be forced onto Frostbite. Signs seem to be pointing to their SW game releasing this year so I can't imagine EA would be dumb enough to force an engine change at this point, but they did do that to Andromeda so who knows.

I'm still kind of skeptical about Respawn's game since we've known about it for like two years and still have seen absolutely nothing of it. Not so much as a logo or piece of concept art.

I have two friends who I play Halo Wars 2 with constantly together, and we're looking for something new... which of the C+C games would people recommend?  Is there one that has a control scheme closer to HW than the others?  Are the servers still operational for all of them?

Can't speak from experience, but looking at the TrueAchievements post it sounds like the servers are all still up. The games all released within a year of each other so I think they have the same control.

Anthem is just okay. Kind of Destiny meets Mass Effect with some jet pack use here and there. I have a feeling it will be a Destiny-like flop.

I picked my NHL 18 as my first NHL game since NHL 12, and my god the AI is utter crap. The number of times I’ve had a player lose a clean pass in his skates is appalling. It’s like “oh, what’s this piece of rubber coming my way? Ewww, it touched me! Get it off me!” levels of stupidity.

Red Alert 3's control scheme is very similar to HW, and the campaign is even co-op like HW. But HW is much more simplified compared to traditional RTS like C&C: in these games, you'll have dozens of units and sprawling bases to build compared to HW's handful of units and predetermined construction nodes. And you'll also have to deal with air and naval units, which can be tough to manage.

...I think I might buy Anthem. GCU + $10 cert plus 45day price match window.

But now no more demo. It's time.

Just checked out that new Rooster Teeth show gen:LOCK. Pretty good for a western made mech show. It still has a tiny bit of of the jank animation quailty but it's miles ahead of their other content in the production department. Having actual actors is way better than the dude-my-girlfriend-will-voice-it quality that RWBY has, which only really worked for comedy. It's insane how far they've come since making Red vs Blue by cropping out the HUD.

May be just me, but I’d rather just play a game. If I really want a “story” I’d watch a movie or read a book.
A basic story and point me where to go, I’m good.

If I want to know the story in a video game, I'll watch a youtube video about it.
As a child of the 80s I must ask that you guys do not fuck this up for the rest of us. We did not trudge through the desolate wastelands of repetitive gameplay and soulless story arcs to have those with minimal tastes drag us back into the echoing abyss of emptiness. Our hearts were nearly blackened in the depths of castles that contained no princess.

I understand why people don’t care about story in games but personally, I need a story to enjoy a game. Even if it’s a career mode in sports games I at least am able to put my own agency in the games. There are some games that I play purely on due to the gameplay mechanics and aesthetics but for the most part only games like Assassins Creed, Dragon Age, Skyrim, Mass Effect, Bioshock and Far Cry are the only ones I fully enjoy. Although I’m in the middle of playing several games, I’d like to get Horizon Dawn for my rarely used PS4 just because the story is supposed to be really good.

I’m not against a story... just most “stories” baked into games are not exactly great. And if the game is good, the story is NOT needed. Bonus sure, but not needed.

I’m sure the story in Tetris is good... but it’s not needed.

Now if you’ll excuse me Dutch has a plan I need to hear (again)

It really just depends on the game. Tetris doesn't need a story, it barely needs characters and a settings.

Something like Return to Zork or any number of text number adventure games? It's gameplay is rooted in it's story.

So today should be my 13th day... go do the daily set and go to my “bonus” and it says I just unlocked the 5 day bonus... scroll up, it says 13... tomorrow will be day 1 again.

The rewards page is so screwed up for me, ive never seen the 14th day.
Now that i'm home, this is what I am talking about.. Note it says i'm on day 13, but just earned the day 5 bonus... which tomorrow will reset to 1 again.

You get a streak bonus at 8 days (I just finished a 5-day streak and it says 3 more days to go for my next streak bonus), so I think it's referring to the 5-day streak between 8 days and 13 days.

The version of Nintendo Tetris with the dancing Cossacks is by far the better version.
I dunno, I think Tetris Effect had a good story in Journey mode, I think I started as an ocean algae, learned fire, went to New York City, went to the Moon, and then I think wherever that guy ended up in 2001 a Space Odyssey. Not sure on the last part.

You missed out on 14, by far the best NHL game probably ever made. They've gotten significantly worse and worse every year. I have probably 170+ DAYS played from 12-18 but skipped 19 this year since the demo was the worst sports game I've ever played.

I also hate the people who say "DURR SPORTS GAMES ARE THE SAME EVERY YEAR" when they couldnt be more wrong. I'm sure most who say that are the kids who play JRPGs.
