Some notes
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

And this is just the “pre game” . The big release for this dev will be Bloodstained Ritual of the Night coming later this year. Bet going GWG is to help generate sales for it.
Yeah, if this is any indication of the quality of the main game, I'll buy it at launch. SotN and the GBA / DS Castlevania games are some of my favorite action RPGs, ever (esp. Circle of the Moon and Aria/Dawn of Sorrow).

And it has awesome 8bit music I assume? If so I can not wait to play this.
The music is great. Chiptune city, highly reminiscent of the original Castlevania games.

Big ol' double nope. There's no pleasin' some people.

With gamepass clearly influencing the selections,I hope for Microsofts sake GwG ends very soon. Another absolutely abysmal month. MS hasnt had a decent GwG month since probably 2017, while Sony is just absolutely embarrassing them.

Also, WTF is up with all the Assassins Creed and Star Wars games? What in the hell gives them the idea that it's a good idea to release a game in each series almost every month?
I disagree, PS+ gave Portal Knights which is on game pass and Steep which was $9 on the Countdown Xbox sale. February is also the last month you get ps3 and psp games on ps+ for free so in March it will only be 2 free games. I would say they are pretty equal in game quality giveaways. GWG has had its share of flop giveaways but it’s been a very successful program that has given me games I wouldn’t have played otherwise. I hope it continues for years and years.

What 4 games would have made it a perfect month in your eyes?

I've been trying to get the entire available Xbox BC as sales pop up, but I'll definitely take free ones when I can get them. February is a great month for GwG, and it looks like Gamepass is shaping up to be a great month as well.

I don't own any of next months games but I have gotten 100% on rogue with a hard copy but having it available is nice.

If I recall correctly it isn't a true remaster but an upgraded port. There would probably be framerate increases and slight graphical improvement but nothing amazing. I haven't played the X1 version yet but with the 360 version being free I'd recommend only getting the remaster if you're a big fan of the franchise.
X enhanced version of the remaster has 4K assets on par with original PC release, and higher quality shadows. It’s also locked at 30 frames per second.

The original 360 version is 720p with an unlocked frame rate. On the 360 it usually ran between 20-40 fps. Not sure how it runs thought back compat.

Overall I think the game held up well for the remaster. It’s an appreciable performance/visual improvement, but it’s probably not worth the $20-ish sale price if you’re content with getting the 360 version for free.

I don't understand. You would rather have nothing than something? I'm not thrilled with this month's GWG either, but i'll take mediocre stuff with my subscription than nothing.
I'd rather have nothing. All four of these games will nrver be touched by me, especially when it comes to not owning licensed games (on the XB1 side)

Well no indie games, no assassins creed, no star wars, no Lego. By indie I mean the $10-$15 garbage like bomberman and castlevania. Really not that hard. PS+ has managed to do it for 2+ years.

Last time checked no one is forcing you to DL the games. Also MS don't even have to offer this as a service. At least it is a something nice for having Gold.

Guys, ignore the troll. They've posted outlandish statements before in this thread just to stir the pot
So far I've dodged bullets on the original xbox games I bought when they first came out and haven't owned the ones given away free yet but my luck will probably change going forward if they keep giving them away.
I've bought several of the og Xbox games when they were on sale(Full Spectrum Warrior, Destroy All Humans, MX Unleashed, etc) without any of em going GWG, but I know that wont always be the case. IMO, I'm glad og Xbox games go free. More the merrier

Nice month almost bought bomber man on one of the last big sales, the other games don’t interest me a ton but might be something nice and random to try one say

Well isn't that the beauty of them giving you the option and not forcing it down your throat? You can take nothing like you prefer and leave the absolute travesty and misery to the rest of us. We'll take the burden off your hands.

You get nothing and are happy (or miserable, can't tell) and we get something. Win win for everybody.

Enjoy your nothingness :)

That's not what I'm saying or what upsets me. Everyone putting on a fad and saying "Wow! Great GwG month!" clearly frightened to challenge the selections is what bothers me. You're an example of that, you're happy with that something, albeit a terrible something. You're satisfied with MS laughing at you while including these games in a paid service.

Bloodstained has a 70 on metacritic, Bomberman has a 63 (the xb1 versions). Nobody is truly happy with these games. If MS only wants to include low score games in GwG, a game like The Surge (a game I own and hate) would be a much better choice as it would show they actually care.

I’m going to go with the gwg copy of rogue, but found this video comparing them on 360 BC and the remaster.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=sQctJwtFEbg&t=209s

And with rogue, I’ll have the entire franchise on xbox with the only exception being chronicles. (Have it on ps4/vita)

Yo dude ps plus gave away a bunch of crap last year too including Might Number 9 and Knack. Out here quoting metacritic like its the end all be all for how much someone should like a game.

How, exactly, do you wish people to challenge the selections?
If no one downloads, how do you know MS will say--oh, we need better games--instead of--well, no one wants anything so kill it.

Do we email those who choose the games and say we arent happy? Then they take it away.

I dont fully understand your argument or why you think they should give in to those that complain.

I wonder what those "Ignore preferences" actually do. Oh, that's right, now I remember. Hadn't done it in a while.

Been a long while since I played it but I recall being near a crate and billboard. Maybe at the top of a smaller building but not the building. Decided I just didn't GAF anymore. I typically like games like this but it constantly shouting at me to get to the roof made me rage quit. I am 90% sure I defeated that boss in the video you linked but never got to the end of the chapter.

Ya know what felt good?  Getting an Achievement in a Kingdom Hearts game.

2002-me wouldn't have understood the significance of that statement, and 2007-me wouldn't have believed it could happen.

The game feels really good from what I've played.

The downside is, I apparently get to join the club of "Get screwed by a Rewards Quest because I bought the game too early."  Do I get a membership card or anything?  Secret menu at the bar?

EA Access:
Dead Space 2
Dead Space 3
Dragon Age 2
Pretty sure theres 3-4 more.

Gamepass:
Dont know exactly but atleast 10

Zombi: Terrible, $4.

Superhot: Awful, $8.

MGS V: Hot Garbage, $0.

FH2 & BF1: Both have had at least one sequel since so literally no one cares about either.

Qube 2: Garbage, like $2.

The only quality game on your list is the witness which I still havent played.

But its clear I'll never understand how people on forums and reddit think regarding Microsoft and GwG. I guess some people truly are satisfied with bottom of the barrel offerings.

I Blocked the obvious troll because one word response was all the attention it deserved and moved on. ANYWAYS, I'm glad Resident Evil 2 and Kingdom Hearts 3 is out mostly because they'll be $15 or less before the end of this year.

Well no indie games, no assassins creed, no star wars, no Lego. By indie I mean the $10-$15 garbage like bomberman and castlevania. Really not that hard. PS+ has managed to do it for 2+ years.
You didn’t answer my question. You’re head of Xbox GWG, what 4 games are you giving us in February. I didn’t ask what games you’re not giving, I want you to pick 2 Xbox One and 2 360 games that we get for Feb.

The reason I say this is because I think it’s a much harder job then people realize. If you give away a bunch of 85+ Metacritic score games you’re gonna blow through your budget and get people to complain because those are the hits people already own. I think hitting those 70’s meta score is the sweet spot because you get them cheap and ppl play games they probably don’t own.

Bloodstained 70%
AC Rogue 72%
Bomber man 63%
Jedi 76%

PS+ meta scores for Jan:
Steep 71%
Portal knights 71%
Zone HD 73%
Amplitude 74%
Ps vita games were not reviewed but have very low user ratings.

In my opinion they are both doing what they should be on these.

Should be hearing something about Outer Wilds this week. Noticed the other day it was removed from the store and that it was missing from the ready to install section of my games. Looking over at their twitter they state that even though its missing MS has said the pre orders are fine. Most of us here would have got them from a mixer E3 stream.

It’s been missing from my installed game section for probably close to two months now not sure we’re gonna be hearing anything this week...

Sorry, should have included that on their Fig funding page they say the next update would be February 1st. Might not be anything substantial for the xbox in particular, but maybe more of idea about release window since this was planned to launch last year.

I personally hate feeding an endless debate with someone who clearly will never change one's mind, but this is turning to be unhealthy for this whole thread and many of us, so I will try to convince you. Look, your valuation and game review are your own opinion, and no one can knock that. But you said that PS Plus embarrassed GWG? That is simply not true (and I am a PS fanboy.). You also quoted Metacritic scores as a standard of quality, so it seems like you do care about others' reviews, so I don't understand why you have so much problem accepting others saying they like this month's GWG. And you sound as if 70 Metacritic is bad -- That is quite a decent score in my book. In fact, Bloodstained Xbox One's user score is 7.9 average, and the same game's Switch version is 82, PS4 is 81, PC is 77, and Steam is 'Overwhelmingly positive by 1,240 reviews.' So you are simply picking the number 70 and saying that the game is one of the garbage selections by GWG.

I think your problem is you are exaggerating and overgeneralizing. I agree with your assessment of Superhot that it is worth purchasing at $8, but why would you say it's "Awful"? You are willing to pay $8 for an "Awful" game? And they never gave Assassin's Creed and Star Wars games "every month." You just feel that way because you apparently hate them. If you said "Meh another disappointing GWG week. Not for me. I'm not going to pay for GWG ever" then nobody would blame you.

This is a topic that always comes up when it gomes to PS Plus, GWG, Gamepass, EA Access, Origin Access, Humble Monthly or whatever. But the fact of the matter is they're simply all businesses... They ask and work with game developers to include into bundles and free games per prepayment. So it really boils down to money. Microsoft is not "laughing" at us while intentionally giving bad GWG selection. In fact, I feel like they are nowadays more user friendly and value-minded than Sony, Nintendo, or EA.

So don't stress it out too much, brother/sister, just find your peace and do not spend your hard cold cash on GWG. But don't blame people who do like GWG like many of us here.

It’s an appreciable performance/visual improvement, but it’s probably not worth the $20-ish sale price if your content with getting the 360 version for free.

You are 100% correct and I was mistaken. Must have been thinking of a different game. As soon as I read your first sentence I thought "I'm an idiot, it's one of the first games I see when sorting to x enhanced games."

Last time checked no one is forcing you to DL the games. Also MS don't even have to offer this as a service. At least it is a something nice for having Gold.
Think you may have quoted the wrong person, I'd much rather have stuff added to the backlog that there's a slim chance I'd play than get nothing at all.

I understand, I really didnt mean to start a whole big thing about what I said, so I apologize to all those who were angry.

Even though I am upset with the game selection, I was/am more upset with the public reaction. If you enjoy the games, simply say "I see a couple on here that I might try out and enjoy" rather than "WOW, Great month! Best in a while!" when clearly that's not the case.

Also, the $8 superhot is absolutely not what I would pay for it, I would never pay for that awful game. I was saying it's been on sale for like $8 before, so MS was basically giving away an $8 game.

I'd just go to YouTube for a story compilation at this point, or find a nice long written summary since the new one is so close. Definitely don't go for dlc when the population is going to drop even further.

I tried it recently myself and died every mission so I'm thinking it's not for me. I am interested in the story though, but I've been too lazy to do as I'm suggesting.
I had the same problem when I started playing it after I got my X at launch. I had to wait for my girlfriend's S to arrive so we could play together. They apparently expect people to play in groups. I'd never be able to solo the story. Those boss enemies have a shit ton of health. We still died a lot. We still need to finish it.

It'll be a cold day in hell before I allow you tell me how to respond to a GWG announcement. fuck off with that arrogant attitude of yours. Take that entitled attitude of yours and shove it. You can have your opinion all you want but you sure as hell are no in position to tell other people how they should react.

fuck you.

It's definitely the best month for me in a while. All 4 of these games have been on my buy list. I tried Bomberman during a free weekend and it seemed pretty dead, hopefully it gets a bigger playerbase now.

Relying entirely on Metacritic to make a point is beyond stupid.

As a PS Plus member and an Xbox Gold member they both have their hit and miss months. Ms Rewards program is much better than anything Sony has offered, but I do think Sony's overall "sales" are on average quite a bit better. Not only in the actual prices but the variety of titles offered. MS seems to have a grab bag of titles they trot out that you know will be in every "big" sale and a ton of the smaller offerings never ever see any sales. Another thing I thought Phil mentioned he was looking into but nothing happened is PS has another decent Humble Bundle this month. I really wish MS would get involved with them.

You’re more upset by the happiness of people who are excited to get these games for free than the actual games? That’s a pretty petty and condescending attitude. I have Jedi Academy on PC and my old Xbox disc but still am glad I’ll get it for free digitally. I’ve wanted to play AC Rogue which is considered a hidden gem because of it’s release date and not being on Xbox 1 at the time. Yes, for me I consider this one of the best GwG months lately because I like these games. You cannot say this isn’t one of the best GwG months because it’s completely subjective. I wonder if you see the irony in criticizing people’s reaction to games they were happy enough to post about it.

I said the month sucked ass yet again and got screamed at, called a troll, and was told not to say my opinion. Now when I suggest to the overly "hyped" people about this month to do the same, I shouldn't do that?

....huh?

I typically lurk more then post, but I saw the high post count since last login and I thought something exciting had been posted to only see us bickering about the value of gamepass. I did enjoy reading through a few of the posts and found it a bit refreshing to see some people weigh in with thoughtful commentary.

In regards to the games for Feb. I still have a disc copy of AC Rogue I bought for $10 two years ago sitting unopened.

I started Syndicate a few months back and have slowly been playing it. Can any AC fans suggest an order for playing the following games? Does it really matter anymore storywise?

1. Finish AC Syndicate

2. AC Rogue

3. AC Origins

4. AC Odyssey

Grabbing $1 for sure for Grim Fandango, Inner Space looks good too. Bard's Tale looks a bit jank but I'll check it out. Hopefully an Xbox one has been discussed by now. These PS4 bundles have been pretty good compared to the average PC ones nowadays. This one and the Capcom bundle specifically. Talos Principle and Killing Floor 2 on PS4 exclusive on consoles and pretty good, so I might try and swing the higher tiers. Cheap bundles are probably going to be the one weakness on my don't-buy-more-games plan.

I don't really get how anyone could act like this is an objectively bad month for GWG. The only way I can see that is either having a bias against indie/retro games, or maybe basing it entirely on retail price. In general, PS+ and GWG stay pretty even in number of better and worse months. Xbox has had the advantage of all 4 games working on one console, while PS+ is generally divided across multiple platforms unless you get a luck crossbuy month, and they're about to stop with non-PS4 games pretty soon as far as I've heard.

You're much less likely to get shit in this thread if you say "the month sucked ass yet again FOR ME", rather than saying any given month is a trash month. The only time it'd really be fair to say the month is objectively bad is when we get some F2P DLC, a repeat like the recent Lara Croft game, or a game that is on both 360 and One that we've already gotten one version of.

Every month where I get at least one game I don't already own is a great GWG month in my opinion :)

It is just icing on the cake for my XBox Live Gold subscription.  I can't believe people actually complain about free games.

Back in the day when I first started playing video games Atari and Mattel did not give out free cartridges every month.

I've recently finished Origins and Odyssey, they have a small bit of future story that binds them but that's about it. Nothing earth shattering, but if you care it would be Origins then Odyssey. The bulk of the games stories are separate.

If I was playing those in an order I would finish off Rogue after Syndicate because they are very similar playing games then head onto Origins and Odyssey. They play pretty differently compared to the rest of the series and I've found it a little hard to go back to the old style of play. In terms of feeling that is not because of difficulty or anything.
