Some notes
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

Catching up: sad to see BC go, but love to watch it walk away. Happy to finally see Asura's Wrath show up, and glad that I can finally restart Star Ocean for the umpteenth time and still not get past the first world. Seriously, long game is long.

Dead wishes of BC: Lollipop Chainsaw, Scott Pilgrim, Anarchy Reigns, Simpsons Game (and Arcade game).

I am a sucker for DBZ, so excited for the new game. Tales too. Saw the last 2 seconds of the Avengers footage. Hank Pym looks...not Pym enough. Also excited for the KH3 DLC. Maybe I can start the game before it comes out.

Nintendo and Simpsons events will hopefully bring more good news.

And finally, because it hasn't been mentioned in a while, Game Pass Ultimate.

Thanks, I usually skim through looking for a list, guess I missed the linked posted.

Excited to see FFVIII on X1. I never finished it back in the day, making it all the way to the end of disc 3 before giving up because I didn't feel like grinding to beat a boss. It has always been one of my biggest gaming regrets.

Where's that guy that used to always say
back compatibility was dying? It took you like four years of saying the same thing, but you're finally right. Congrats?

But yeah, this is just about as disappointing as I've been with this console, and that's saying a lot. There's still a year a half before the next console comes out and they supposedly resume some sort of back compatibility, and it won't be for anyone except for those that pony up for their new $500 box. Just feels gross, and there are still so many games that are being left behind now.

It’s a year and a half that they have to work on BC for that next gen system. If they don’t start now, it won’t be ready.

And the 600 BC games they did is 600 more than Sony has. Nothing gross about that.

I can't gripe on them too much, I think they went way above and beyond with what they did with the BC program. After awhile there is just a certain amount of games from the 360 era they can't get the rights to alter the code to get it to run on the Xbox One.  I don't think it's a weird time at all to change focus now to the next box. There is no guarantee that every single game released on the Xbox One is going to run perfectly without weird random bugs on the next generation of systems and I think their resources are well served to focus on that. That said next box might have enough horse power to just natively run all Xbox 360 games with no need to alter the code thus clearing them from any liability. If the rumors of a PS5 that can run every playstation game are true that's something they would at least look into.

The game looks pretty good but I have concerns. Four or five studios working on this game, and plans for years of support means it's probably cross-gen. No paid characters or locations makes it sound like we're going to get raked over the coals by cosmetics.

We're getting fucked by Sony again though. I guess this is what's taking up Destiny's exclusivity spot. Thanks Square-Enix.
I guess I will be skipping this game.

Looking at the release calendar, I feel like Spring 2020 is going to be an absolutely amazing time in the gaming industry....and Holiday 2019 is going to be oddly pedestrian.

It wasn't announced in the backwards compatibility list, but

Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix

Just popped up in my ready to install list!

Edit: Man, I'm just too sleepy. Somehow I missed the announcement
I thought I had that digitally. I know I do on my DS and I think my PS2. I’ll definitely grab this once I get the store credit for it. I loved that game.

I'll go with 3/4ths of those being delayed into the next consoles launch window

I am just hoping a lot of those spring 2020 games have plans for upgrading when the new consoles release since I most likely not play many of them until end of 2020 to 2021.

False alarm about the countdowns.  I saw some countdowns in the page data, but when I took a closer look, it was for items that were on sale.

While my scan earlier started out alright, it slowed down considerably as it went along and by the time it finished a couple hours later, it had missed a number of things that TA had picked up.  Hopefully the site gets better as the week goes along.

I am legit disappointed that BC is dead on Xbox One but super excited if Scarlett will continue the BC program. As others have mentioned not seeing titles like Lollipop Chainsaw and Mad Payne as BC stinks. Just want to also mention Nier, Space Channel 5 Part 2, Mortal Kombat 9, Eternal Sonata, Beautiful Katamari, the F.E.AR. games, the first Kane & Lynch game, Sacred 2, The Saboteur, The Last Remnant, Resonance of Fate, Condemned 2, Wolfenstein (2009), Call of Duty Classic, Binary Domain, Quake 4, Mercenaries 2, Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing etc. Still a lot of big titles out there that won’t go BC for the current generation. Oh well.

Can't make up my mind if I should upgrade to ultimate. Live and gamepass add up to around 44 months. I'd be "losing" 8 months but think it would still be worth it since it would be extending live by 4 months and gamepass by 24 months essentially.

I don't play Sea of Thieves so I always wonder if these Mixpots trinkets add anything beyond cosmetic appeal. Would someone who plays care to weigh in? Purely for curiosity
Everything in Sea of Thieves is cosmetic, technically. There are no things you can buy to upgrade your performance, just stuff to make your ship (or compass or sword or whatever) look cooler.

Having played off and on for about a month, I still don't know if I like that.

It’s a year and a half that they have to work on BC for that next gen system. If they don’t start now, it won’t be ready.
Does Microsoft has limited resources or something? I'm not buying the excuse that they couldn't handle it, especially after they have had this many years of experience getting games to work.

And the 600 BC games they did is 600 more than Sony has. Nothing gross about that.
I don't care what's Sony is or is not doing. I don't have a PS4 and don't plan on getting one. This is about the Xbox/Phil Spencer philosophy that they have repeated frequently about how we should be able to play all of our games going forward on all the consoles you own. They're basically throwing that away and redoing it to add "but you have to give us five hundred bucks to keep going" at the end. If they eventually cut us off from new games, that only makes sense. Cutting us off from older games makes zero sense.

If it were 8 to 12 months from now I can understand it even if I'm not happy about it. Doing it this soon is asinine.

Look at it this way: What you've paid for now is all sunk cost, right? So why not pay a buck to consolidate the memberships and "extend" both of them individually, rather than looking at the extra months as something you're "losing"?

Um last I checked they're not taking away BC from the Xbox One, it still works, just used it.

Have to also remember that there may be legit reasons on why some of the games didn’t get BC. I’m sure MS knows Max Payne 3 was a highly requested title. Maybe Rockstar didn’t want it to be BC.

As others mentioned, there also could be licensing issues for many games.

I doubt Microsoft sat down and said people really want XYZ game but fuck them, we’re not giving it to them. We don’t know all the things that go on behind the scenes.

All I know is I am incredibly grateful for what they did. They didn’t have to do it. But I can only imagine how much work had to go in to getting 600 games to work properly.

Am I disappointed that some games I wanted didn’t get BC? Sure. But we may never know the complications of why they didn’t come.

I’m just appreciative for what came out of it.

The announcement of no more BC titles is really shitty. So many 360 titles not bc still. Don't even get me started on the original Xbox gems. I understand more work needs to be done for the successor but your telling me they couldn't keep a small team to test new BC titles? Even once title every few weeks would be nice.

Yeah, now it is.

Look, I get it. This doesn't bother most of you that much, but it does bother me. I'm annoyed that backward compatibility has ended on the Xbox One. I'm annoyed that games that should have been backward compatible were forsaken for games that were already over-represented on the system. (Someone else said that only 10% of the games in the BC list were first person shooters, but I'm counting ten Call of Duty games alone. Were ten Call of Duty games really necessary? Really?) I'm annoyed that I have to buy another system to resume that slow drip of games from previous generations, and I'm annoyed that I may still not get the kinds of games I want to play even if I buy a Scarlett, or an Xbox 33 1/3rd, or whatever they're going to end up calling it.

I've cooled off a little about this. What's done is done, and there's no way to change the decision Microsoft has made. Still, it's aggravating that I can't retire my Xbox 360 and classic Xbox, because the games I enjoyed most on those two systems just won't make the migration to newer ones. They probably never will, as long as Microsoft continues its selective approach to backward compatibility. I greatly prefer the old BC standard of "put a disc or cartridge from your last system into your new one, and it will probably work."
When was that actually the "standard" for non-Game Boy consoles, though?

The PS2 played PS1 games, sure. But the (contemporaneous) GameCube didn't play N64 carts, nor were any pre-Wii Nintendo home consoles backwards-compatible. The Xbox obviously didn't play anything but Xbox games. And the limited backwards compatibility in the PS3/360/Wii generation was phased out by all of the Big Three, after the first waves of PS3s and Wiis and the first couple of years of Xbox 360. Even with extensive Game Boy/DS compatibility, it's not like I can plug in a Pokemon Red cart in a DS.

The expectation that anyone would be able to continue playing games from a previous console generation on the next console was maybe briefly a thing from 2004-07, but it's only since Microsoft poured money into backwards compatibility over the last few years (which amounted to turning Xbox Ones into big fancy Xbox and 360 emulators!) and folks have realized that new console generations are going to be less dramatic leaps that the expectation of backwards compatibility has arguably been a "standard."

To be clear, I agree with you on backwards compatibility being a good and pro-consumer thing, and something we should clamor for as gamers, and I'm also with you on pining for the ability to play some games that aren't backwards-compatible. (If only NCAA Football 14 could come forward, y'know?) But I'm just not convinced it has ever been an accepted industry standard for longer than blips here and there -- and I think Microsoft doing what it did primarily as a reward for players with deep backlogs and a goodwill gesture mid-console cycle when it could have milked its efforts (a la PS Now and/or Nintendo's many non-transferable Virtual Consoles) is probably more worthy of praise than scorn.

Just saw the Avengers trailer, and it looks cool, but does Black Widow look like a dude to anyone else?
Nah, I think she looks fine. Maybe her hair could use some tweaks. Not every woman is going to look like Scarlet Johansson. If anyone's face looks off to me it's Steve Rogers. He doesn't really look like his comic counterpart to me.

The main game I'm bummed didn't make it to BC is Nier, but looking at their current track record and some of the announcements tonight, it seems like a remaster will come eventually. I'd think they'll wait until the next Nier game is announced though, so probably not until next-gen.

One thing I'm a bit surprised is that they didn't try to squeak in are more games from the studios they now own. I desperately wanted a New Vegas X enhancement, but Alpha Protocol sticks out as the only Obsidian game that didn't make the cut. Other than that the missing games for other studios would be Kung Fu Chaos and a bunch of Forza games, so I guess they did hit most of them.

Other than that I only had a few 360 games that missed the cut that I'd play again coming to mind. Beautiful Katamari, Binary Domain, Lollipop Chainsaw, and Ninety Nine Nights.

Thank you. I'm not even interested, not my cup but the way MS throws out these items made me wonder

Looks like the BC updates are live. I have Perfect Dark, KotOR, Battlefront 2, and Republic Commando all updating.

All the Avengers look like Kmart versions. Hopefully gameplay is good enough. Although it's not like we're getting it.
It's not exclusive. PS4 is just getting exclusive "content". Probably the same level of junk as Destiny was getting.

It's a reasonable assessment of the situation. I have to give you credit for that. I'm not feeling very reasonable at the moment, but I'll get over it.

I'm not sure I'd describe backward compatibility on the Xbox One as a gesture of goodwill, though. Probably more like an act of desperation, to win over players who had stampeded away from the Xbox One when it was first announced as a nightmare of restrictive DRM and creepy surveillance. Don Mattrick did not want the system to be backward compatible; that feature was likely added later to assure players that Mattrick was no longer calling the shots. (Good thing too, because the Xbox One would be far less entertaining without it.)

They're not. They're moving their resources towards the imminent new console, so these games may be played moving forward constantly, not only until Xbox One EOL. This was clearly stated.

Of course even MS has limited resources. The amount of time it has taken for each new batch of BC games to come out reflects this. It's been clear since the start that they do, in fact, have an extensive testing process. They're now going to have to refocus this process on the Scarlett hardware to ensure there are no hiccups at the 2020 launch. If you're at all familiar with the console launch process this really isn't that much time to work with.

If you truly don't want to be "cut off from old games" - as in actually looking ahead to a new generation - you should have zero issue with this.

Went to Xbox FanFest @ E3 yesterday and today. Tonight I got to meet Rod Ferguson and team as well as 343 team and Phil Spencer. Got them to sign my Pops. (Phil is in Red on Master Chief). All very cool people!

I'm just now getting caught up... Sad to see BC ending for Xbox One but glad to hear we can expect day 1 support for BC next gen. I don't see any cause for the meltdowns that some of you are having. I agree MS really did us a solid with BC and can't complain about what we got.

It's already been stated that BC was meant to be a feature and function of the platform at launch, but the backlash over the OS and digital licensing forced them to direct all their resources into removing that stuff before launch. This why the 360 games on Rare Replay worked, it was tech that was already on the way, but they shelved it to put other fires out. They also had to work out the business side of things since they can't make any games BC without publisher permission. What's surprising is they waited to announce it until it (the BC program) was actually ready.

The goodwill for consumers that I see is that they could very easily charge $1 to activate/upgrade disc copies of games and people would probably pay it. The fact they have (had?) a dedicated team working on BC games and tweaking them without any additional compensation is incredibly consumer friendly.

After I’ve had more time to digest everything in regards to BC I guess the only title that I am truly surprised that did not make the cut is Call of Duty Classic. Microsoft made sure the last batch of Far Cry games went BC with the final X1 BC announcement but COD Classic will be the only 360 COD not getting the BC treatment.

What's surprising to me is that they ended it right now during E3 when everything is supposed to be more.... positive? To like get people hyped. Instead of maybe saying it's going to end at the end of the year or the next instead of so abruptly.

True, but E3 is the time when more people are paying attention, which feels more appropriate than it just going up on Twitter or being announced by some other means. It sounds like they may resume once Scarlet is out the door, too.

The program has hit most of the high notes and we got quite a few I never expected to get, so it's hard to complain about - especially knowing those titles and purchases will work on the next console generation.

Enchanted Arms is going to be a great Games for Gold in the coming months.

I'd guess Xbox Live on 360 has about a year left? Sony and Nintendo already shut down support for everything before the Switch and PS4.

that reminds me i want to buy a Windows 8 phone to play Final fantasy 1 with Achievements.

They could, but they won't since it is too easy to share games and then everyone owns them. The solution they have makes financial sense, have the disc and put it in each time to play it.

The 3DS and Wii U eShops are still up, and you can still buy PS3, PSVita, and PSP games on PSN. Not many good sales though.
