Some notes
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

[*]All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every Tuesday.

Maybe this new Home update will make it a bit snappier. I kept hoping they would improve it in some major way like to the scale of what they did with the 360 dash a couple of times but at this point id rather they focus on making the next box better.
Anyone remember the original X1 dashboard and system? Holy crap that was slow. Want to join a party mid game--sure that will be a couple minutes at least.

I actually like the current dashboard and interfaces better than the 360 or the PS4. It's easy to organize my games and put groups on the home screen and easy to use the popup menu. Sure, I'd love to lose all the ads and I think the option to turn certain features (like Mixer and such off) would be nice. But the 360 isn't any better. If anything the main screen on the 360 is literally all ads except a couple tiny options.

I'm very surprised that a large number of people are using voice commands with Xbox. Is this true? Or do they mean people are just yelling at menus because it's so slow?
I occasionally use my Kinect to turn on/off my Xbox and the occasional pause/play for videos. That's about it.

I wonder if they made event skins harder to unlock in overwatch since they didn't add as many this time. I got two legendary skins tonight and neither were event skins, usually I'll only unlock one non event skin during the entirety of an event. Maybe it's just poor luck on my part.
I'd have to agree. I've opened about 20 lootboxes so far and have received two old epic event cosmetics. Haven't even got one legendary drop of any kind. Had one other epic drop of credits, the rest duplicate common and rares minus the few new ones they added this year. I have to say, the lack of rewards from lootboxes is directly affecting the amount of time I play. Sure as shit would never pay for a bunch of lootboxes full of dupes. So anyway the only new cosmetics I have are because I won the nine necessary matches this week and last week. Lootboxes suck.

I was using until they removed the Kinect port from the consoles, so switching over to Xbox One X and needing to get an overly expensive adapter to use it killed that idea for me. It was only good for turning it on and off, but losing the ability to play the few Kinect games I had also sucks.

They may have taken it off Xbox. I did it on the console and received credit for the quest.
I am still waiting for my points, been waiting a week or 2. Support are looking into it but they are taking a while to look into it.
Is there a site or something that shows the spend $40 for 4000 points offer? Or maybe a pa photo of it?

Anyone have any good book recommendations about games or the industry? I just got a new Paperwhite and am looking to create a book backlog similar to my games. I already have Blood, Sweat, and Pixels, Console Wars, and Masters of Doom.

I got the new system update today.  There are apparently still ads on the front page.  Aside from what was shown in the pic, everything else seems to be the same.

any cheap movies on here anybody know of?

I don’t know why I bought Resident Evil 7, it is scaring the shit out of me. I barely made it through all dead space games and here I am pulling a “let’s see what other games I can play” when I’m walking in the dark and can hear someone breathing in a freaky manner.

Stay away from The Evil Within then as that game scared the shit outta me when I first played it.

I used them a lot before Cortana. That update removed many of the useful commands and Cortana was trash. I still use it for Xbox on, when the Kinect works.

Masters of Doom was my preferred out of those.

Humble Bundle has Video Game type books on a semi-regular basis as does Sunday for Kindle Deals.

Edit:

https://storybundle.com/games

Quite a few there as well.

The Untold History of Japanese Game Developers: Gold Edition

https://www.amazon.com/Untold-History-Japanese-Game-Developers-ebook/dp/B00Q93N29I

I thought this one was really interesting. It has a bunch of interviews with devs from the 8 and 16 bit eras. It does have a lot of stuff about studios that didn't have a ton of games released in the West, so some of the material and anecdotes might require a bit of use of the footnotes or some like Wiki skimming. It also goes into interesting stuff I haven't seen covered much, like the doujin game (basically indie before the internet) scene from the old days, or a preservationist organization that's trying to archive as much as possible, with a lot of talk of the cassette tape games that the MSX and some of the European consoles used.

There are two more books in this series from the same author so I assume they're of equal quality, though I haven't read them yet. The third one doesn't appear to have an e-book version for some reason though.

These are associated with the Hardcore Gaming 101 site, which has a lot more gaming books that are probably worth reading, though I've only glanced at a couple of them. They usually focus on either a specific series or developer.

Looks like ACA Neo Geo Turf Masters was delisted. It was available this morning but it's been wiped from the marketplace and unavailable on xbox.com.

Suck because it's been months since the last ACA Neo Geo release and I guess they are done.

I hate the running being required, the game doesn't feel precise to me. I'd like to be more in control of where I'm going but when I'm running it's hard to be accurate.
I agree about the running and imprecise feeling. Seems like I’m always running like a freight train and stopping on a dime or bumbling into a random structure with no clue what’s going on.
While Division’s cover mechanics aren’t perfect, it’s tactical and feels deliberate. I enjoy and think the Mass Effect series did the best job.

On a side note, I’m looking for a new game to get into. There aren’t too many that have piqued my interest besides what I already own, I’m considering Red Dead Redemption 2. I haven’t enjoyed any of the GTA games since Vice City and I didn’t play the first RDR. It looks enjoyable but I don’t like playing a bad guy in games. Any insight would be appreciated.

^ You can be mostly good in RDR2. It's a 'Redemption' story, so you start out bad

Decided to buy Daytona USA and Jet Set Radio(I still call it Jet Grind Radio) for $5 each. Was kinda thrown off when Daytona's size went from 228 MB on the 360 to 884MB on Xbox One. Jet Set Radio's went from 998MB to 1.59GB. First time I've encountered different file sizes of DL-only 360 games.

But am enjoying widescreen support for these and the cleaned up visuals.
All small BC 360 games have about a 500mb increase on Xbox One. It's the emulator. I've bought a few game's newer versions on Xbox One just to save some space before I purchased a larger hard drive. When I replaced the 360 version of Limbo with the Xbox One version the size dropped down again since it doesn't have the emulator.

I have no clue I literally have never used voice commands
Back when I had my original XBox One VCR and was playing FH3 I used voice commands to work with Anna. I thought the implementation there was pretty good. Sort of missed it when I moved a S model. But otherwise never used voice commands either.

This x10. Some of the terminology is dated and it starts off a little slow, but you will not find a more thorough oral history of Nintendo's early business in the video game industry or the development of the Famicom. The chapters devoted to the development and acquisition of Tetris alone are worth reading it and worthy of a documentary or a film.

I think the new dash looks nice, removing the tabs makes it so much less convoluted.  Here's a video tour of the update, the reviewer does seem to believe the dash is quite a bit faster.

Yeah Cyber Lip just came to Windows 10 within the last week, but nothing on Xbox since April 18th.  Neo Turf Masters was the very first ACA NeoGeo game released so if anything would be de-listed first would be that one. I remember looking at the list of all Neo Geo games and it was something like 148 for the Arcade and a 117 for the home system. Xbox has 108 so figure at least 10 or so Mahjong and Quiz games that probably aren't making it here, they could be done on Xbox.  Something called Zuppa coming out tomorrow for PC

They could always go back and start releasing the Arcade Classic Archive games that are non Neo Geo, like they do on every other system except Xbox. We'd never get Donkey Kong or Punchout, but there is a bunch of stuff that starts with Ninja I'd pick up. Ninja Spirits, Ninja Warriors, and even Ninja Gaiden if just for the continue screen.

There's no difference between the NeoGeo Arcade games and disc ones, or if there is a title that only came out on CD it's a rarity.

Wiki  says the number of titles released

Arcade - 148

Home - 117

CD- 97

Xbox has 108 right now, or minus 1 if Turf masters is gone

Well, the quests for Gamepass finally got me. I started the horror ones and after getting an achievement in both RE games, I started up State of Decay 2. It really got its hooks in me and before I knew it, I was 2 hours in! Kinda reminds me of Farm Together (which I’m playing with my daughter) but with zombies.

Free Play Weekend: Worms W.M.D, Overwatch, and Naruto to Boruto Shinobi Strikers are all free to play with Gold this weekend. I've been wanting to try NtB since I'm a nerd, so this sounds like a great opportunity.

Damn it’s been a long time since I posted. Absolutely horrible week at work. From the looks of it, guess I didn’t miss much as far as sales...

trying to find an official source explanation as to why Turf Masters was delisted. I'm hoping to acquire most of the KoF/Fatal Fury games as they hit sale but a sudden delisting has me nervous

Slow news day so here's a random PSA:

On the console store, if you go to any game page and press start you can go to the store settings and turn off auto playing videos for all store pages. My friend didn't know about that so maybe a few of you want it off as well.
Guess i'll keep the PSA going with 2 more:

#2: There's a search function by pressing Y that works anywhere on the dashboard including My Games & Apps. You can set it to search the store or your installed games or both.

#3: If you need to "manage" a game, you can hit the view/back button on the tile to go directly to the manage section. You don't need to press start and go to manage game every time.

It’s crazy to me that Epic gives out 2 free games per week now on PC, that’s 8 games a month!

Moonlighter and This War of Mine this week
Alan Wake and For Honor next week

What’s your response Microsoft???
