Some notes
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

Are you telling me that GWG and PS Plus games aren't free because I have to buy the subscription first?

211-2116560_0-replies-0-retweets-1-like-thonking-png.png
Lmao.

I've bought Gears 4 I think a total of four or five times, two of the times were presents the others were promotions and other crap so it going GWG...yeah that checks out. That and Castlevania I think I've owned two or three times? And I only don't own Forza in that whole list.

Only own Gears 4 out of the GwG for August.  Good month for me.

I guess I'll buy the DLC, to a game I'll likely never play, to Forza 6, a game I'll likely never download.

Torchlight!!!! Yes.  I remember playing the trial/demo when it first launched on the 360.  I thought it might be a fun game, but it had no multiplayer and my friends and I were social gamers at the time, focusing mainly on multiplayer games, so we passed on it.

Now that I have more time to play solo games, I can finally try this out.  :D

It’s a great set of games quality wise for sure. My only gripe (besides owning them all which is not a real gripe) is that Gears 4 is on GamePass. And, as a first party title, it’s been assumed that it would not leave. So for MS trying to sell people on GP Ultimate, this is giving away something all of those folks would already have from their subscription.

Quality wise this may be the best GWG ever?
Best in a awhile, yes. I agree with awp that Gears 4 feels kind of pointless with Game Pass but most people are not the nerds that we are. I bought Lords of Shadow when it went BC on disc, but I'll gladly take a digital copy. Never played Torchlight but I've heard nothing but positive things.

Torchlight is a Diablo clone. It's not as good as D3, but it's good for a "free" game.

And there's the catch 22 of wanting "good games" in GWG...you're going to end up owning them already, haha. Start buying shittier games, people. Come on!

Torchlight is damn good. Is this the prelude to Forza delisting? I'm not huge on metroidvanias but can't argue with the quality.

If you're referring to Castlevania Lords of Shadow as a metroidvania, then don't worry because it's not.

I don't think this has ever happened to me before, but I own two of the games this coming month (but who doesn't have access to Gears 4 by now?).

Is it me or have they made it harder to find the GwG on the main xbox.com site?
Shortcut (let the page load) --> https://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/gold?xr=shellnav#gameswithgold

Longcut:

  1. Go to Xbox.com.
  2. Click on "Games" across the top, then click on "Console games", then click on "Games with Gold."

Good month for me, I don’t own gears 4 digitally (I think). Don’t own Forza 6 or Torchlight though I have it on steam. It’s great diablo like game for those who haven’t played it.

Quality wise this may be the best GWG ever?
None of those are good games.

Honestly, I just consider GWG to be a Gold bonus because if I really want a game I'll just buy it. This lottery of what free games I'll get every month sucks and mostly just stuff to add to a backlog of titles I'll never play or ever play again.

I always thought Torchlight was a strategy type game for some reason and ignored it. I'm just now finding out it's an ARPG and now I not only want to play the first, but I'm also going to pre-order TL2. I love Diablo III style games.

Just curious...how's everyone feeling about Gears 5 based on those two test-play sessions? I hope I end up loving it but am not vibing it too hard as of now.

Btw, I loved Gears 4.

Microtransactions are already being added to Crash Team Racing. I don't know how any people who are even vaguely aware of Activision's general practices can trust a word that they say. This one is going to be nice to bring attention to the few naysayers I know IRL, they really thought it would permanently have free updates even though it has a store exactly like that of Fortnite and Anthem. It's especially bad since there were a ton of articles saying there would not be any microtransactions added based on some interview, like this one:

https://screenrant.com/crash-team-racing-microtransactions-gameplay-presentation-e3-2019/

Anyways, here's the important bit from the new announcement:

As always, the Pit Stop will be stocked with new and returning characters and cosmetic items, which players can unlock using Wumpa Coins*. With all this content available, there will also now be a way for players to fast-track their Wumpa Coin collection if they like. Starting in early August, players will have the option to purchase Wumpa Coin bundles from their game console stores to supplement the Coins they earn by playing.

https://blog.activision.com/crash-bandicoot/2019-07/Get-Ready-to-Go-Prehistoric-The-Back-N-Time-Grand-Prix-is-coming-to-Crash-Team-Racing-Nitro-Fueled-on-August-2nd

Sure, you can still get the currency through gameplay, but just look at where Rainbow Six Siege or Street Fighter V are for a glance at that philosophy long term. Only the most dedicated players even have a chance at realistically unlocking most content for free.

SIX didnt reply, on ignore list confirmed lol
Nah, I just didn't know what you meant by your post. I only actually have a handful of people on the ignore list, just the real shit-stirrers.

Just curious...how's everyone feeling about Gears 5 based on those two test-play sessions? I hope I end up loving it but am not vibing it too hard as of now.

Btw, I loved Gears 4.
The gameplay itself seems fine so far. I don't really like the Arcade multiplayer mode, beyond that the little in the Test felt like slightly tweaked Gears just like every previous game. The UI changes will take getting used to, but I think the input changes are for the better. Chainsaw on RB, all melee related attacks on one button. Going to be hard to judge without either a bigger demo or the full game. Personally I'm most concerned about Horde since we've heard almost nothing so far, I really hope they don't bork it with lootbox cards again. After that I'm curios how their cosmetics are going to work as it sounds a lot like Fortnite other than some changes to the BattlePass system.

I hope that there are a couple more new weapons but that's not the impression I've had. Next concern is what they're going to do map-wise.

Sure, you can still get the currency through gameplay, but just look at where Rainbow Six Siege or Street Fighter V are for a glance at that philosophy long term. Only the most dedicated players even have a chance at realistically unlocking most content for free.
I've had arguments with people about this before, who say they don't mind paid unlocks if you can still play to unlock it, not considering that the company makes it take 10,000 hours to unlock everything for free instead of 100 to push people toward those microtransactions.

Knowing Activision I strongly suspect they'll go too far with the Fortnite model and have a bunch of store stuff be only available for limited and never return. I'm also expecting some kind of unbalance DLC a ways down the road, like objectively better carts only available through a loot box or something, as this seems to happen to most CoD games towards that later part of their life cycles.

I'd say a perfect 4 for 4. Torchlight 1 had some frame rate issues near end game with my magic dude but otherwise controls well and is a great port. If you end up loving it Torchlight 2 is out the month after for $20 and will be X enhanced.

Keep any eye out for the discounts on the Forza 6 DLC, history has shown us there will likely be a “complete” dlc bundle on the cheap so you can grab the Car Pass and the Porsche and NASCAR expansions.

The Porsche expansion was great, adding about 20 different Porsches (insert Jeremy Clarkson Beetle joke here), and Virginia International Raceway, which has about a dozen configurations.

You're talking about here on CAG, right? TA manages this I believe, so it must be doable.

Edit: TA removes it once you start the game that is, guess CAG is actually tracking our games played so there's the main difference.
No, I mean on Microsoft's site. I have every game I'm interested in on it so I can easily check to see if one of them is on sale. Then when I purchase a bunch of games that are on it, I have to go and remove each one individually. They need a move to cart option.

Is anybody having issues with their Microsoft account?  I can't login to Live e-mail, Xbox, or Rewards all of a sudden.  They all give me an "this Microsoft account doesn't exist" error.  I'm freaking out right now.

EDIT: Working now.  These error codes leave a lot to be desired.

Did you tell that kid on COD last night that you fucked his mom? If so, that's your problem

I agree, huge problem. It's probably the final nail in the COD coffin for me. They put the guns behind a massive grind with a time limit. I never even got the 1st AR (the SWAT I think it was called) and I was playing a lot at that time. The only other option was to hand over your $$$. Not a small amount of your $$$ either. I'd be down for a reasonable $30 multiplayer season pass that included lots of map adds and guns. Or just make the guns a quest like in WWII. Hell, I wanted the zombies maps but even the COD pass or whatever they called it seemed rip-off.

Whether you find it valuable or not, DLC prices has gotten crazy. To think the complaint used to be about horse armor for what was it like $2.50 or $5? Now a $20 Fortnite skin is commonplace. But apparently crazy people buy them.

The roll out was a disaster. I'm curious how they were caught with their pants down. They should've known how many people had downloaded it and provisioned enough resources to handle a decent percentage of that at the start time. Maybe they actually did and severely underestimated, but I doubt it.

Mechanics seemed alright for the most part, though some things felt a little off. Had some trouble maneuvering around cover (sliding into it, turning a corner). Need to relearn some of the controls, like the chainsaw and B doing executions. One of the tour of duty challenges was getting executions and I died a few times pressing Y next to a downed opponent and doing nothing, until I noticed the B prompt. (Similar thing with FH4 changing the button to bring up the map filter.) A number of display bugs, like floating guns. There are a bunch of cover spots on the District map that you'd think you could mantle or reach over, but can't.

Not sure how I feel about the smoke / flash bang split. I don't remember if switching to the flash carried over from match to match, but it definitely didn't between gaming sessions.

Right now, I think I'm just going to GPU Gears 5. That's more of a reaction to their microtransaction policies with Gears 4 than anything I felt about 5, though having the ultimate version of Gears 5 in GPU helped in that decision.

Horde news will be next month. June had the Escape coverage at E3. July is Vs month, with the eSports tourney and Tech Test. They're keeping the campaign pretty much under wraps until release in Sept.

Just a reminder for those who will be new to Gears 4. There is currently an event of sorts to unlock special gilded (black and gold) versions of characters, and a few other things like Golden Weapons, in both Gears 4 and Gears 5. The last batch of activities go live on 8/1, including playing the campaign co-op.

You can actually see all but one of the requirements in the achievement list, I know a few of the unlisted ones are play 10 MP games, play 3 Horde matches, and the above Beat the Campaign in Co-op. They all end on 9/2, and even starting fresh I think you should be able to do most of them if you're really interested. The hardest ones to do in a month are probably "Earn 50 achievements" and "Get 2500 kills in Horde in Gears of War 4" unless you're willing to grind a bit. I don't think "Craft the High Roller emblem in Gears of War 4 for 3,000 scrap" is going to be feasible either unless they do some kind of in-game boost or bonus.

Finally, Gilded RAAM and e-sports Kait are already locked out due to date restrictions, though Re-Uping 10 times for RAAM means reaching level 1000, which likely would have been impossible in a month unless it was literally all you did besides sleep.

You can easily track everything here.

Love the GwG for August. Not going to play any of them any time soon; but did play Torchlight on 360 and loved it. I love any/all isometric ARPGs so I may not be the best reviewer out there. The games are all quality, only way it can suck is if you own everything already.

These days I dont play any games unless there's a quest to go with it. I can't risk getting an achievement in an obscure game only to see it added to the active quests. Even with plenty of planning, the summer sale had a quest to buy stuff, right after I got what I wanted. fucking ridiculous.

Message to MS: Add more quests. :)
