This thread will maintain a list of all current and upcoming sales and markdowns on the Xbox Live Marketplace / Xbox Games Store for the USA.  YMMV in other regions.  If non-US sales are listed, they will be marked with their applicable region(s).

Please note:

  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance, but DLC cannot.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.  This requires being a paid subscriber or within a console-activated "1 month complimentary Gold trial" account.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.
  • All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every other Tuesday.
  • ALL OFFERS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE! No information within this thread can or should be construed as accurate (or still valid), therefore ...
  • Always verify Xbox Live Marketplace prices before your purchase!
  • Spend wisely, have fun, and enjoy!

Thanks for validating my decision to pass on this. I didn't enjoy TF2 nor MNC. I'm happy with Titanfall, BF4, and BO2 for my FPS fix right now.

You're right about cheeves being pretty attainable. One of my friends has only been playing for a week and he's already at 950 GS.

Tastes, really. Likewise, if you hate stuff like TF2 and MNC, PvZ will likely not be for you. I did 1000G on it fairly easily, the free DLCs already added a further 250G, which are also quite easy, especially if you happen to start them along with the base game ones. The only one that's causing me troubles (and keeping me at 1225/1250G) is the one where you have to defuse a bomb at max 3 seconds left in the new DLC mode. That one's a bit random, obviously you need to be lucky enough to be able to be the one to defuse, not be killed while you do so, and of course that the timing is perfect. Enemies keep on spawning so it's hard unless you boost, which you can hardly do in public matches. I'll get there! I'll do it!

Hopefully.

Yep that's the one I'm missing, most of the others are just a matter of focusing on something during a match, or just waiting until you achieved x amount of something. Personally I don't mind, still took 24+ hours to 100% I'm now at about 40, fun fun game, best FPS in a long time.

Don't think the consoles were "rushed" at all. Or at least not because of the Wii-U, the Xbox One obviously was ill conceived, but that seems to be due to some really odd leadership and lack of focus. But with the way the original Wii's sales collapsed in 2011-2013, the timing couldn't have been too surprising to Microsoft. It was definitely time to release those new consoles...actually it was probably overdue. The "10 year lifecycle" is a myth....it doesn't actually happen.
I wasn't implying that it wasn't time for a new console generation or that Xbox didn't suffer from bad leadership under Mattrick (I agree with you there). Just that based on all the interviews I'd read on the subject, Sony and MS weren't expecting to have a new console out 'till at least a year or two from now. I believe one of them (I think Microsoft) just came out and admitted they didn't have any ideas for their next console around the time the Wii U was announced. I really believe they intended to have a 10-yearish lifecycle, just coasting on the current install bases. Everything has just felt so put-together-last-minute. And I mean, it makes more sense for Sony and Microsoft to have kept it going for as long as they could because they make bank on software sales, not hardware sales.

The Wii U was definitely released when they wanted to release it (Wii support had pretty much been dead long enough to give that away). Either way, I agree with the rest of your post.

Ah Good old times before MS did a 180 degree turn lol

This brings up a point that I don't think it meant to. We were never told what the used fee would be. What if it was only $10? Basically meaning you could get a digital version of any game for $10 if you just borrowed the game disc from a friend or bought and resold the disc?

Not that I approve of having an always-online console just for the sake of $10 digital games, but it's an interesting concept.

"The bits that are on that disc, you can give it to your friend and they can install it on an Xbox One," he said. "They would then have to purchase the right to play that game through Xbox Live."

"They would be paying the same price we paid, or less?" we asked.

"Let’s assume it’s a new game, so the answer is yes, it will be the same price," [Phil] Harrison said."

Thanks. I must have missed that quote. I wish he would have attached a # to it, but "the same price" is good enough for me. What a load of shit.

To anyone contemplating Plants VS Zombies: Garden Warfare, any version, do yourself a favor and buy it. It's terrific fun, think of it as an epic mixture of Team Fortress 2, Monday Night Combat, Plants VS Zombies and Battlefield. Combine it with lovely humor, wacky customization and awesome style. The gameplay is extremely balanced, polished, and very stable overall: great netcode, the lobby system could be better but it works, I probably had like 2-3 server drops in like 80 hours of gameplay (and one was a rare scheduled maintenance). There's various game modes, fairly many maps, dozens of classes, I think currently close to 2000 customization items, and all of these are increasing thanks to free DLCs, which btw also add new achievements. Oh, the achievements are pretty feasible, too. It's cheap, it's hilarious, it's fun, it's unique, it's got a free DLC plan, it's got a great community... being it an online game, who knows how many people will play it in 2-3 years. But as it is, it's one amazing game, as I mentioned earlier I played it more than Ghosts and Titanfall, both bought at launch as well. And I'm big on shooters. Do yourself a favor and buy it, it's so cheap anyway.
Not that I disagree with anything you've said but you didn't mention microtransations coming into the picture - like I said on the Xbox One/360 PvZ thread I'm OK with.

That's just madness. They were never ever going to have a low fee like $10 for digital games other than old games on sale like with GoD. There was no way that borrowing a game would then unlock the ability to buy a $60-70 game for that cheap early into its release. Other than MGS:GZ we have yet to really see a digital release that's offered cheaper than a retail one despite there being clear savings. Even today we barely see GoD titles offered lower than their retail prices (again other than sales) despite the fact that MS has extremely low overheads to offer their titles in comparison to the traditional brick and mortar shops. I'm also more than sure that they can work out good percentages on sales with the publishers as, unlike brick and mortar shops, they own a complete monopoly on digital sales for their systems. Yes $10 digital games is an interesting concept, but so is a console that wipes my ass or does my taxes - interesting concepts that have no chance in hell of ever existing in reality.

The reality was that MS was hoping to get rid of the brick and mortar sales. They ultimately want a digital only scheme in the same way that Apple has one as they can make way more profit that way. It's telling that there's been a lot of talk about a possible XBone that comes without a disc drive. The goal of MS was not to sell you $10 fairly recently released games in the way that Steam does. The goal was to get rid of Ebgames/Gamestop and other retailers, get rid of the idea of used games as a whole and try to assimilate a new generation of young gamers into accepting a future where retail games/used games do no exist and everything is digital only. It was not driven by making it cheaper or easier for the end user. It was driven by the idea that if they got rid of retail sales they would increase their profits heavily. I have no idea what the cost is for publisher's to license the ability to publish games on an Xbox. I recall seeing that the unit price they had to pay was anywhere between $3 - $10. I have no idea what Rockstar/2K has to pay MS when they sell $500 million worth of GTA V copies on the 360. But at $3-10 a unit and let's say 10 million units that's anywhere from $30-$100 million (and my guess is that 2K worked out the lower end of the sales figure). But imagine a digital only system that works like Apple's in which MS nets 30% of all sales - suddenly that figure becomes $150 million. That was the plan. That was the idea. And yes it's possible that ultimately we might have seen sales from time to time it would have also meant no used games at all which would have driven older games to retain their inflated value as there was no other means of getting a cheaper copy to lower the value. It would have sucked, especially for CAG gamers who tend to like buying lots of games.

I say that no one should even be thinking about a digital only scheme for consoles until a veteran digital retailer like Steam works out some form of ability for users to trade, sell or lend games on current PC systems. I also think that we are seeing that the XBone was slightly rushed to market before all the features were 100% worked out and a lot of them are now being patched in (though we're 6 months into its life and we still have missing important features galore). Considering that it's rather clear that this current generation of consoles was not entirely thought out I think it would have been a mess of a thing to implement the system they were thinking of putting out. It was clear at the time that it hadn't entirely been thought out and that was part of its failing as they couldn't communicate what it was exactly as it was clear that they had just scribbled a few lines on a drawing board rather than fleshed things out. Any company moving forward that does this sort of thing needs to do the work of fleshing it out entirely before bringing it to the market. The benefits and draw-backs to the consumer need to be clearly explained in black and white. This whole idea of avoiding questions by saying "it's the way of the future" or "it'll be great for everyone" is just media relations mumbo-jumbo. It was clear that the majority of consumers did not feel safe buying into a product that couldn't be explained to them. That was a failure on Microsoft's part and no matter what exclusives they wind up having they will be playing catch-up for years considering their rough start to this generation.

Fyi the microtransactions in PvZ really aren't necessary if you play the game.

You get plenty of coins through playing.

Just to confirm, the Xbox one controller will charge with a regular microusb cord, right?

Are the transactions available yet?

You should be able to. I can plug a micro USB into the wall outlet and it'll work.

Forcing Kinect down everyone's throats was also no bueno. The new Kinect works great, but the problem is I never use it. It's just an accessory I don't need for anything that I was forced to buy (since it is included).

Not that I disagree with anything you've said but you didn't mention microtransations coming into the picture - like I said on the Xbox One/360 PvZ thread I'm OK with.
My stats say I get around 600-700 coins per minute, plus bonus coins for levelling up and stuff. That pretty much means I can buy just about any pack of cards in 3-4 matches, normally. Unless they nerf the winnings, the rate you get coins is perfect for me, and microtransactions really mean nothing. Until the DLCs are free and there won't be any specific pay-to-win items, I don't see issues. There will be noobies spending dozens of bucks to level up faster, but they'll still get trashed by me, even if they bought themselves 50 levels more than I earned. Ha!

But ... isn't the new Plants vs. Zombies multiplayer only?   I want a single player campaign, dammit.

Last week's sale was the first time I bought DLC so it made me go back to my backlog. Ended up finishing Dead Block and I'm on my second playthru on Black Knight Sword. I'm also two levels away from finishing Toy Soldiers and getting into the DLC levels.

Now that the Star Wars talk has ended ....... what's going on with Star Trek games? Are there any good ones?

Lol I didn't say anything about microtransactions, just that you didn't mention they added that to the game.

No offense, this is said by someone who hasn't played it. Actually PvZ2 is a F2P mobile only game with a few campaigns actually.

They're not in yet, so it kinda slipped my mind, also because I've found it completely irrelevant the way it's being advertised right now. Not different from the fast unlock DLCs on Need For Speed or Battlefield, they only give you shortcuts, but it's not really the way to play the game. Fortunately it does not boost performances in any way.

Like what's been said in http://www.cheapassgamer.com/topic/323262-plants-vs-zombies-garden-warfare-now-available-on-xbox-one-and-360/ yeah you still have classic modes where everybody is placed on the same playing field.

That, and also, this is just coins being bought with real money too. You earn the coins through regular play, and they mostly give you aesthetic stuff. Yeah, there's stuff to for improving your characters a little bit and to earn variations on them, but they are well balanced, so there are no real advantages. And if there were, yeah, classic mode all the way.

I know it's technically not a Star Trek game but FTL is the closest thing we will likely ever get to an amazing Star Trek game. Just rename your character Kirk/Spock/Uhura/Data/Whatever and enjoy one of the most addictive games ever made. Sadly it's not on XBLA but I hear the new iPad version is amazing though the preferred way is to play it on PC/Mac (it's also one of those amazing games that can be played on an old system as slowdown really doesn't affect the gameplay).

There were some good older ones, new ones not so much. I was a big fan of Elite Force, but FTL is definitely a game you can make "close" to Star Trek if you wanted.

Well I feel better buying the State of Decay expansion with that last sale despite not having the game now that I see there's a new expansion coming soon.  Maybe we'll see a nice sale on the base game to coincide.  I can hope at least.

They were picked up by Microsoft so yeah most likely there will be future sales.

If anyone is interested in seeing what's been released for GwG so far since the program started, along with any regional variances, there's a good wiki page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Games_with_Gold_games

So far I've gotten 6 free games out of the 20 offered (I owned the other 14). I'm actually surprised that I made out with so many considering my massive collection and backlog.
I have only owned 3 out of the 20 free gwg, so far its going good!

I've only owned 5 GwG since it started. The arcade games esp worked out since I haven't really been into them that much. Now everytime there's an arcade sale, I'm on the fence wondering if it's gonna be a future GwG. ha ha

Yeah I also owned 5 of the GWG. 2 retail and 3 XBLA. The Arcade games are surprising because I own a lot of those, so to have only 3 of them is pretty good.

Im at 10/20, so half new games for me, can't complain!

Also picked up the free Star Wars shirt since I didn't notice that earlier!
