XBOX 360 Red Ring of Death FAQ: Soon to be known as the Red Dot of Death! :P
Thank you very much ZerotypeX! Kept looking pass the field which had the tracking #.
Naiku, has your shipping information been updated yet so you can track it or are you still stuck at "billing information received?" My 360 should have shipped the same day as you.
My first RROD console has apparently been repaired/replaced and is now on its way back to me. Just so I'm prepared for what's to come, when I log into my Xbox Repair online account, it says "repaired" and lists the same serial number on this unit COMING back to me as the one I sent them.

This does absolutely mean I'm getting back my original console, or will I just have to wait and see what shows up when it comes?
Same thing happened to me. Got the same serial #, but I don't know if the console id is the same or not

I'm pretty sure, they just took the guts out of the shell and put new stuff in there and just put back on the original shell. To be sure though, getting it back and examining it will get you your answer.

Your welcome, glad I could help. :D

Nope I got the same thing. It doesn't give a date when it will arrive either. Ground shipping, 8lbs. hopefully it arrives before the weekend.

Ok. Good to know. I called to check the status because UPS called to confirm a delivery for tomorrow, but it's just the faceplate. I had a custom faceplate on it when I sent it in, I guess they are shipping it back to me.

But, now I can't get an update on my service request... every time I try to log into the website with to check it says the request doesn't exist. Blarg!

Finally got an update + tracking...

Status: In Transit - On Time
Scheduled Delivery: 10/30/2008

Can't wait >

I'm with you guys. 10/30 delivery also.

Thanks ZerotypeX. I skimmed through the FAQ but, to keep it simple, is there an immediate/easy way to find out exactly WHAT they did without unscrewing everything?

Also, if you get your original console back, are the chances of it now working properly higher than if they replaced it with another unit? I didn't read through this entire thread (it's pretty long!) but I wonder what, from other CAG's experiences, the percentages are.

Mine is scheduled to be delivered 10/29....I am really interested in this too. I really want to know what they did with my console...The last time I sent my redringed console in I got the "same" one back...over a year later and it rings again. I'm hoping for a new console...not just new innards.

Add me to the 10/30 delivery list. Mine was listed with a different serial number before the ticket was closed out, so I guess I'll wait and see what happens...

Your welcome. Unfortunately, there is no way to tell what they did to the system. I'm assuming you got the 3 red rings and I believe that means "hardware failure". Without knowing what actually broke, can't tell what they fixed and replaced.

Mine is just working fine, I believe it is quieter than before. There are stories though of people having to send it in again. You most likely will, but when is another question. They replace the model of what you had originally (ie, you send in a launch model, you will get back a launch model).

I think that Fable II is fucking up people's 360's. My 360 runs very heavy while playing Fable II and it is now locking up on not only Fable II, but other titles as well. It sounds it's on its way to the RROD again. Way to go Microsoft.

They just received my 360 today 10/28. Becoming religious and praying nightly that it gets back to me before the 7th.

Ok im either jebus heard me praying last night or something is wrong. 1 day after receiving my 360 its repaired and is being shipped back to me.... Is this a mistake?

Mine was also shipped out within 24 hours of receipt.

Yeah I had the 3 red rings. Oddly (and mine was a launch day console) I had no problems until about a month ago. Sometimes when you turned it on, the rings would appear, but if I turned it off/on quickly, at times it would start back up and be fine.

I'm guessing they are probably "swapping out" the insides of the system if they are fixing them within a day of receipt and getting them back out.

336-332-7835 Just called my house. got no answer so i hung up. google says its part of UPS saying u need an adult signature. Does that mean it arrives today :D !!!

nope...guess that number calls to remind you about an adult signature. it doesn't guarantee the console comes that day. Can't wait for my xbox...

My baby's home!!! Well, more like my baby's equally attractive sister, but still... It got here around 6pm. Now I just have to start updating all my licenses. Sigh... Hopefully it will stay healthy for a while.

No lock ups "yet", but my 360 is ridiculously loud when playing Fable II and the disc itself gets really hot. Even with mey headphones on I can still hear the noise it generates! All other games are fine. I pretty much limit my Fable II playtime to less than an hour per session. Don't want to take a chance on getting a RRoD right before the holidays. That happened to me last year and that really sucked!

My console just came back -- same serial # and manufacture date, but it doesn't look like the same console I sent. Different drive (I have a BenQ drive now, the old one was a Samsung), different shell on the front, even the info with the serial/manufacture date looks like it was newly printed as the font is different (I took a pic of my old unit before I sent it, just to make sure I had my bases covered). So it's pretty clearly a different LOOKING machine despite having the same information -- sticker inside the face plate indicates it's a refurb, but at least the external condition seems close to new.

Everything is running fine so far...now to play the hell out of this thing in the next 3 months to see if I've got another lousy unit or not ;)

Well, my Halo Edition 360 (that I bought specifically because I was under the impression it would not be as prone to red ringing) crapped out last night after JUST getting to the final boss in Fable 2. And a week before Gears of War 2 comes out, no less. Turnaround time is estimated to be 2-3 weeks.

Joy.

Yeah, watch out for that. My 360 sounded like a jumbo jet taking off whenever I was playing Fable 2. It seems that game murdered my system. The drive was running like crazy when it was in and the in-game menu took FOREVER to load up sometimes. A few other friends told me their systems were running the same. My 360 was manufactured in August of '07 so it's not like it's a launch unit.

Actually, turn around times have been pretty quick recently (if you print out the shipping label and provide your own box to ship it to them compared to waiting for the "coffin" to come).

Yeah... they didn't give me that option. They're sending a next day FedEx label for me and the system will also ship back to me next day. I called that 866 number from the FAQ which was super helpful.

UPS finally brought my repaired yesterday or tried to but I wasn't home. I'm about to go pick it up from the terminal in a few minutes. Sent it on Oct 20th so it was about 10 days although my system died on a friday so i'm counting it as 13 days.

The Xbox repair specialist assigned to me is terrible she never answers when i call and when she does she calls exactly when my message had said i'll be unavailable at work. Screw it i'm just gonna see what's in my box today and then call and bitch about the whole process.

Complete opposite experience from the poster above. This is my 5th return and my 866 number was nothing except frustration from a proper English speaking person... No upgrades no nothing except the lady kept talking about compensation for my continued troubles. Of course now I can't get ahold of her so i'm waiting to get my box before I call and go over her head. :D

Final winner in the whole deal was M$ because I broke down and bought an arcade bundle, half price using credit from flipping games but still...... It was worth it though because i've already dropped 10+ hours into Fallout 3. :D

Yeah watch out for Fable 2, guys. A few of my friends have been playing this and having their systems lock up. The game runs loud as hell and scares the crap out of me when I'm playing... and apparently for good reason. Sending out my 360 in the next couple of days. I was SO looking forward to playing Gears 2 all next weekend long. Damn.

Just unhooked my new arcade unit and boxed it back up for safe keeping. About to have a Fallout 3 marathon to check out my new 360 they swapped for my RROD model. I should've hooked it up last night because I played for like 6 hours straight. :)

Replacement system looks squeeky clean and brand new with a 2008-05-08 MFR date. No HDMI slot like my arcade model so it's not that new but my PS3 takes up my tvs only HDMI slot anyway. Hopefully this one lasts longer than all the rest. One yea and I got the standard 1 month of XBL f.u. gift. :bomb: My warranty is supposed to expire this month so when the gal handling my case calls back or if I have to call her i'm going to push for more free warranty since i'm a repeat customer of the RROD returns.

To the poster above: I played alot of Fable 2 on my arcade model and no loud noises or slowdowns or anything unexpected.

So I just got the RROD on Friday and my console is officially dead. It served me good though for two years with no problems. It just sucks that it breaks one week before GOW 2. Tried calling 1-800 4 my xbox number, but the guy was only able to register my console and not actually process the repair order since their system was down. =(. I also tried going to the website, but apparently the website is experiencing problems and repairs cannot be processed either =(. So much for taking Friday off to play GEARS 2. The timing really sucks.

Did you call that secondary 866 number that's on the FAQ? If you at least got a reference number for your problem you could call that number. The same thing happened to me and they sent out a FedEx box for me already.

I received via e-mail a UPS label to return my broken 360. I provided my own box and sent out the console this morning, hopefully the whole process won't take too long. =(

Well son of a B

Just had the xbox give me those rings RAWR. The last thing I was doing was playing the World at War beta, shut it off and than turn it on now and just got it. It's MFR date was 10 18 07 so it pretty much was a falcon board anyway ...the psu also was 175 watts.

So what seems to be the best bet for getting things going with box and everything. Phone call or is there an online way to go about this.
Just go online, it's mucho easier. At this time, you'll probably get re-routed to someone from India.
I know seriously, I've seen how other members had a time getting rerouted, calling time and time again. Now I'm just afraid I'm going to be going down this road of xbox after xbox just dying left and right, and getting non HDMI boards, or they will just demote me to some ones they have laying around ready to go, and ready to die in a year.

I'd rather have a 360 that dies in a year than one that makes this high ear-piercing sound everytime I play. It's so high up that you can barely hear it, but you know it's there because your ears start hurting. It's that bad -- which is why I sent mine out today.

You may get lucky and get a newer 360 manufactured date, but I think nowadays, that load their 360s with new Motherboards/Fans if it needs fixing.

Whoever said that no matter what, each 360 that comes in gets a new DVD Drive/Motherboard, can anyone confirm that? Because that's really all I need.

Well, in my case, the third time's been a "charm", and my current refurb Elite has survived playing Fable for hours on end the last week or so... (gronking the drive like an epileptic drinking Jolt Cola) and I've only had 3 in-game lockups... most likely a result of me zooming through the menus before the game had a chance to redraw and such (one such incident occured at the produce stall in Bowerstone. She was open, but the only thing that was visible (while it was redrawing) was the heart above her head. I proceeded to "A" interact with her and Voila! lockup.) :applause:

I sincerely hope I don't have to go for #4... but with this console's history, 4 seems quaintly low...

Man would be nice to get a new dvd drive, probably a lot quieter now a days too. I just hope I can at least get a later date than what mine is. Guess it couldn't handle both Fable 2 and Fallout 3 being played on it lol.

Edit : Well the site is offline, and I refuse to call now since businesses would be closed, and an Indian man would be my best buddy so in the morning for me meh -_-

wtf? So I went to ship out my 360 today. I log onto xbox.com to check my repair status and my console # isn't even registered on my account anymore, apparently Xbox.com decides to have a cosmetic makeover. In addition, I didn't bother writing down my UPS tracking number or the number I was assigned when I called Xbox customer support (I couldn't understand the numbers he was reading to me).

I assume the one they gave me online via e-mail is the same one they gave me in the box. :S

fuck. failed. i might be screwed lol. Why would xbox.com get rid of my registered console? I literally shipped it out like this afternoon. The console couldn't have arrived to Mesquite Texas in like 3 hours. I never knew XBOX would literally delete my repair status, wtf? Anyone know what I can do?

WTF. :bomb: My console isn't showing up at the new site either. I did write down the UPS number and it's telling me that the console was delivered to the Microsoft repair center today. They better not screw me over. fuck.

I'm in the same boat guys, so don't feel bad. I imagine it's that way for everybody whose 360's are in the shop right now. I'm sure they'll know to send them back :) The new website isn't fully up yet. Sometimes it says you don't have any registered consoles, sometimes it doesn't know your console is being serviced, and the rest of the time it just says "This service is currently offline. To check your repair status, please visit this Web site later." I'm sure they'll get it straightened out and that it won't delay your repair any.

I don't know what the hell they are doing. Earlier today I was doing my repair online, fucking got it all the way through, and got a error page, after getting the mailing, and requesting for the box and what not.

Now later in the night I come back to my computer to start it again, and now it's telling me "invalid serial number" so it seems my fucking status just got lost in this new site or whatever they are doing. So I go through the normal way of calling, getting a unless man, getting a useless reference number and getting a more useless email with the return label!

All I can say is wait it out, that's what I'm doing I tried to example that I did it online, and now my info is just "lost" and invalid, but it's just ignorant fools. This is ridiculous.

Yeah just tried to do the online repair request with package material and I get this ::

We're sorry, the following error(s) have occurred:

So what they don't have regular pro editions or wtf?? Well until tomorrow or after the 6th the website will be working at times, and not so either got to wait until friday or by tomorrow.

My Falcon 360 DVD drive is making strange noises and failed to boot Saints 2 last night until I reset it. Maybe I should just eBay this quick and get a Costco bundle.....

Alright, I haven't been able to find an answer for this anywhere yet, but maybe someone in this thread can give me some advice so I don't have to call MS and deal with their crappy tech support.

Christmas day 2007, my 360 that I bought in April 2007 got an RRoD, so I promptly sent it to Microsoft. I got it back from them around January 15th, and it was a refurb unit.

Now my original 360 was "born" in August of 2006, while this refurb 360 has a creation date of December 2005.

Now the 3 year RRoD warranty only covers systems for 3 years from its Manufacture date, now that the system I have is a refurb, will MS be lame and say my warranty is up next month, or will it be 3 years from when the system got refurbished/sent out to me? If it's going to end, I'm just going to force RRoD it or just send it off to MS some point next month before it's up, so I don't have to deal with anything.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I need some opinions guys. My girlfriend's 360 got the RROD a couple of weeks ago, and I'm trying to figure out what I should do with it.

I can either A) Send it to Microsoft and get a refurb, or B) Get a local guy to replace the X-Clamp.

My thought was to go right for the X-Clamp, but the modder (cool guy) said that he only gives it a lifespan of 6-7 months with the X-Clamp fix, and that he would reccomend going the Microsoft route.

However, from what I've read, the refurbs don't sound all too great, and seem to be guaranteed a RROD fairly early on. What would you guys suggest?

And I'm not too worried about it being opened up and out of warranty. If it breaks down the line, I can always get her a new one for $200.
