Xbox DRE, any way to fix it

try cleaning the drive, and if that doesnt work, buy a drive on ebay. Putting one is about as hard as replacing a PC DVD drive.

Yeah I used a lens cleaner and didnt have any success, I though there might have been a mechanical fix for the drive.

Yeah I already have one bought with credit, it just seems like a waste of an xbox, to have it sitting there
 
When you replace a drive , do you have to get the same brand?
Thompson to Thompson , Samsung to Samsung , ETC .

My nephew's drive went out , and I would like to know if I can replace a Thompson with a Samsung .
Any help would be apprieciated .
 
Anyone know how to do it for a non modded box? xbox-scene has info for adding a PC drive, but your box must be modded. At least here's a link for pics on how to remove your drive if you get a new one from ebay:

(also, mods, I don't know if this would be wrong or not, I wouldn't think so, but if it is, obviously feel free to delete it)
