10/3: Zune 2 Official Info:
Microsoft unveils Zune Social, new Zune devices, innovative Zune software and redesigned Zune Marketplace — all geared toward discovering and sharing new music.

SEATTLE — Oct. 2, 2007 — Underscoring the company’s vision for helping to advance the digital entertainment industry and deliver great music experiences to its customers, Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates and Corporate Vice President J Allard yesterday unveiled the next generation of Zune® portable media players, software and online store. Gates and Allard also introduced Zune Social, a beta online community Web site built around and powered by people’s passion for music.

zune2_allardandgates.jpg
The two new models of Zune portable media players feature the new Zune Pad, an innovative touch-sensitive button for navigating on the device, as well as wireless sync, a feature that allows Zune devices to automatically sync over the device owner’s home wireless network when it is connected to an AC adaptor, in a dock or speaker dock accessory. Existing Zune owners will automatically receive new software features, the redesigned PC and device software and access to the new Zune Marketplace when everything is released to the public in mid-November.

“Twenty years ago we bet the company on an integrated productivity suite of word processing, spreadsheets and presentations, and we changed the way people work,” Gates said. “Today we’re making big bets on games, music, video and connecting these entertainment experiences to help change the way people play.”

“By tapping into customers’ passion for music with Zune Social, we’re starting to change the game,” Allard said. “This lets us start building a new, more valuable kind of relationship with consumers that, combined with other Zune innovations, will start to drive the entire music industry forward.”

“The time is right to let go of the older business models and recognize that consumers want something different when it comes to music today,” said Terry McBride, CEO of Nettwerk Music Group. “People are looking for simple ways to find great music and easily take it with them wherever they want to go, and Microsoft is not afraid of doing things differently to deliver on this vision.”

Two New Zune Devices Fill Out the Family

Microsoft announced three new models of Zune portable digital media players: a sleek, black Zune 80GB hard-drive model, which has a bright 3.2-inch screen and comes with premium headphones (ERP $249.99; all prices are U.S.); the ultraportable Zune 4GB (ERP $149.99); and Zune 8GB (ERP $199.99) flash models, both available in pink, green, black and glossy red. The new Zune devices feature the Zune Pad navigation button, with its touch-sensitive surface. Consumers can flick their thumbs over the pad to fly through lists of songs or albums or to fast-forward through picture slide shows or videos. For those who need to pause, advance or adjust the volume on the device without looking, they can also navigate the Zune Pad using physical cues by pressing on the four sides or the center of the button to adjust the volume or choose the next track.

zune2_lineup.jpg

Together with the original Zune 30GB, the new devices round out the player family and lets users choose the size, color or price that suits them best. Every Zune device includes built-in wireless features and an FM tuner, and they all have a bright color display that is perfect for showing off album art, pictures, videos and podcasts. All devices have been given distinctive new menus, and it is easy to customize the background screen with a personal picture. Ensuring that existing Zune owners benefit from the advances in this release, all Zune 30GB devices will be automatically updated with all the new features as well as the new device software design this fall.

New features for fall include the following:

 • Wireless sync Zune devices will automatically sync over consumers’ home wireless networks with this helpful new feature, aimed at ensuring that Zune owners always have the latest podcasts and other content ready to go when they‘re leaving home. Syncing with the collection on their PC happens via a home wireless network and will start on its own when the device is placed in its dock or plugged in to charge. Alternatively, the sync can be started manually.
 • Extended wireless sharing Share select full-length songs, albums, playlists, pictures and even audio podcasts from device to device. Consumers can now listen to any song received up to three times with no time restrictions, and they can now also pass along songs to other friends who have a Zune.
 • Recorded television content to go The Zune software will now automatically import broadcast content recorded on Microsoft® Windows® Media Center for Windows Vista® Home Premium or Ultimate, so consumers can sync them onto their Zune media player and watch them on the bus, in their car or wherever they want when they’re out and about.

Connecting People Through Music

Launching first in beta, Zune Social, a beta online community Web site, gives people a place to share their music tastes, knowledge and experiences with others. Anyone can create a free, customizable Zune Card that automatically updates to reflect the music they are listening to on their Zune or with Zune software on their computer. The Zune Card shows most recently played tracks and highlights that person’s all-time music favorites. Other members of Zune Social can play samples of the songs a user has been playing directly from a friend’s Zune Card or link to Zune Marketplace, where they can buy or download the music. In a nod to the inherently social nature of music, Zune Social will eventually enable its members to place the Zune Card on today’s most popular social networking sites, where it will continue to update automatically and show off what its owners are listening to.

In addition to creating a friends list, members of Zune Social can send song links and messages to each other, post comments on a friend’s profile page or on their favorite artist pages. They can discover new music by seeing what their friends are listening to, receiving recommendations from others in the community or by seeing what the top fans of artists they’re interested in are listening to. Each artist page will list the Zune Cards of the people who listen to that artist the most, making it easy for other Zune Social members to browse their recent playlists and discover new content they can sample, purchase or download with a Zune Pass.

Zune Marketplace and Software: Easier Than Ever to Discover New Music

The Zune Marketplace online store has been restocked and redesigned to make it even easier for people to find what they are looking for. The Zune software has also been completely redesigned with a new look and feel and lots of helpful new features. In addition to offering more than 3 million songs, the updated version of Zune Marketplace will launch with thousands of music videos for sale and over 1,000 of the top audio and video podcasts available for free. Consumers will also be able to choose from a selection of more than 1 million digital rights management (DRM)-free MP3s, which can be played with Zune or any other digital media player. A new, streamlined and highly visual layout makes it fun and easy to browse through the store, and a new integrated search feature gives consumers one view across the music, music videos and podcasts categories. By typing in an artist’s name or genre, users will see all relevant content that is either already in their collection or available in Zune Marketplace.

zune2_software.jpg

To let music fans try new music, Zune Marketplace continues to offer Zune Pass, which lets consumers download as much music as they want for a flat monthly rate of $14.99. To inspire Zune Pass subscribers, Zune Marketplace genre editors offer a range of playlists and promote new albums each week. Consumers can also choose to purchase music and music videos individually using Microsoft Points.

New Accessories Work Across the Product Line

Zune will also be offering a new line of accessories to help consumers get the most from their Zune content wherever they are — at home, in the car or on the go. To make it easy and affordable for existing Zune customers, original Zune accessories will work on new Zune devices and new accessories will also work with the Zune 30GB device. In addition to a selection of accessories from partners, eight new accessory options are available from Zune this fall:

 • Zune Home AV Pack. Home Dock with three faceplates to accommodate each Zune device, wireless remote, AC adaptor and composite AV output cable (ERP $99.99)

5/14: Halo 3 Zune

halo3zuneftw.jpg

I’ve been told that they will be available online as early as the middle of May and then in stores around the first week of June. The soft launch will be similar to the to how the Pink Zunes were rolled out. The Halo Zunes will be limited edition but no ceiling has been decided yet. Since there have been over 4 million copies of Halo 3 pre-sold I think we can assume that they won’t limit the production like they did with the Pink Zunes.

How to play Divx and Avi files on your Zune:

Found a way to put DIVX and AVI files on your Zune which you can then play on your X360:

1. Change the extension of the file from .divx or .avi to .wmv
2. Add the .wmv files to your Zune but don't start the sync process
3. change back the extension of the file on your PC back to .divx or .avi
4. Go back to the Zune and sync
5. You know have Divx on your Zune.

Reviews:

CNET 8 out of 10
The good: The Microsoft Zune has very good playback performance of audio, video, and photos; intuitive and colorful interface; good FM radio with RDS; works well with Zune Marketplace software; integrated wireless allows sharing of songs (limited) and photos; many accessories available at launch.
The bad: The Microsoft Zune is not backward compatible with WMA-DRM9; weak native video support (cannot play protected content) and no video offerings from Zune Marketplace; cannot be used as a hard drive (and no UMS support); proprietary USB; cannot use Wi-Fi to sync, stream, or purchase content; minimal bundled accessories; no podcast directory; maximum capacity is 30GB.
The bottom line: The Microsoft Zune with its intuitive interface and solid playback performance will please most users. But lukewarm format support and the cool but limited Wi-Fi capability will have advanced users seeking more. The Zune is a very good start, though.
...Overall, this seems pretty promising. I can't find any mis-steps or anything where I have to ask "wait, this is dumb, why did you do this?" in both the player and the software. The Zune itself is very sexy, and feels nice to the touch—not too heavy. We can't wait to do another hands on as the launch date approaches. Oh, and I still can't decide which color is my favorite.
Zune is a 30 GB Player. You can store up to 7,500 songs, 25,000 pictures, or 100 hours of video. Make play lists on the go and watch a slide while you’re listening. But Zune’s about being connected - about turning 1000 songs into 1000 recommendations or 1000 different experiences with 10,000 different friends.

You can plug your Zune device into your Xbox 360 to stream music, pictures, and video, via USB cable. Get all your Zune content on the TV in your living room. Also, when Zune launches, folks who also have a Media Center Edition 2005 PC will be able to access and play any music they downloaded from Zune Marketplace.

MS Points will now be going beyond the simple gamerpics and Picture Packs. You will need them to buy yourself music and music videos, as well as any other ‘video’ content Microsoft bring our way. Looks like consumers are going to have to prioritise exactly what content they want: should you pay 200MS points for some Horse Armour, or maybe not waste it and spend it on some good music? The choice is now freely yours!

Unsurprisingly, it supports Microsoft’s very own WMA format, along with MP3 and AAC for music. Very handy for transferring over from your iTunes (assuming you didn’t buy them from the iTunes store; that music has DRM protection and only works on iPods). For videos, Microsoft unsurprisingly support their WMV format, along with H.264, MPEG4 and 320×240. For pictures, JPEG is supported.

you can share a full-length track with a friend, and they’ve got three times to listen to it over a three day period, after which they can flag the song for purchase on the Zune Marketplace.

...but they do hint heavily at future software updates to take even better advantage of the wireless capabilities.

there are three packs being released. Travel, car and home packs, each offering different things, depending on when you are most likely to use the Zune. Details of the packs can be found here.

 Firefox for some reason copies stuff like that, not sure why, I fixed it.

No extended thoughts on this, just a few random observations.

The MS Points thing is both interesting and scary. They need to undercut the Itunes costs if they want to be successful, but I bet they'll just match them. I don't think they're stupid enough to actually make their stuff MORE expensive.

Mildly interested, but for fuck's sake can we PLEASE GET SOME .OGG SUPPORT. Christ. I'm stuck with a 3 year old Iriver player because it's the only one I like that can play back .ogg files.

This may wind up being the Saint's Row of audio/video players - improves on the original in many was and is underrated....but will never get the acceptance it deserves because it's "a copy."

Honestly they should have priced it at a more competitive $229-249 price tag to compete with the 30GB iPod because for only $50 more you can get the 80GB iPod. And since when is 30GB 100 hours of video?

oh great, MS points for music now

love the carnival/taste of chicago business model. Please, let me pay for everything in MS points. PASS.

everyone should just get a creative zen...... i got the touch 20 gig, if it died, i would definately buy another, its a no BS player, just click and drag songs to it, no software needed.

I actually like the MS point system. I look at it this way - if they charge $5 for a XBLA game, then I'm paying $5 - end of story. If they charge 400 MS points, then I can find a deal on MS point cards & pay less actual $$.

That said, I really don't know how to take this. I'd say they are trying to compete with the ipod as well as the impending link between the PS3 & PSP. Dunno how this one will go, but I guess time will tell.

Anyone hook up their Zune to their X360 yet. Impressions?

I got one, just got over the process of adding about 300 songs. Will have to try this out soon.

Wow, you bumped up this old-ass thread. There's been like a bunch of newer ones with lots of impressions on the Zune.

Anyhoo... Music and picutres are awesome, but the videos look like what a 320x240 video blown up looks like... crap. Watchable, yes, but very pixelated. Especially if you're using a 42"+ HDTV.

post your impressions and add photos if possible. The 360/Zune connectivity has been the least covered anywhere... I have a hard ass time finding any info on all those details. It's a large factor in why I plan on getting one over an iPod but I don't know enough about it to warrant the connectivity to be useful.

There's really not much to it. You plug the Zune in via the included USB cable(which charges it while plugged in if your Xbox 360 is on), and you can listen to songs, view picutres, and watch WMV videos that are stored on your Zune media player on your television.

I will.

So far I simply love the GUI of the Zune. Its so easy to use and I love how you can turn it on its side to view widescreen videos. The Zune marketplace doesn't offer any movies or videos currently but it should soon. My sister has a 30GB iPod video and after she tried my Zune out she was jeleous. Its just an awesome gadget. Love the fact that you can change the wallpapers. Aappearently you can view a slideshow of your photos are you're playing music. I haven't gotten deep enough to see it in action.

The Zune comes pre-loaded with some mp3's and some music videos. The videos are great quality for an mp3 player, the screen is pretty big with bright vivid colors. Currently looking for free software to convert DVD's to use on Zune or just torrents for videos.

So you can't hook up the Zune to 360 wirelessly?
So you can't hook up the Zune to 360 wirelessly?
No you can't.
But anyway I love the Zune to 360 compatibility. I can now listen to the cagcast while playing Gears of War:). The only complaint I could think of is when you ad videos to a Zune that are HD the Zune software compresses it to fit its screen(which is fine) but when you want to watch that video on your 360 it displays in the resolution of the Zune.

I downloaded the 1up show to my Zune( watched it on a long bus ride) and then I experimented with the 360. The video quality is not bad but its not HD.

But hey I love my Zune so its win win for me:lol:
everyone should just get a creative zen...... i got the touch 20 gig, if it died, i would definately buy another, its a no BS player, just click and drag songs to it, no software needed.
Actually the Zune software is very easy to use. Just plug it in, go to Zune on your computer and drag and drop. My only complaint is that there is no podcast feature like iTunes. (Does anyone know if Microsoft is going to do this?)
I'm still waiting for a good deal on this... something below or around $200.
amazon has it for $229.99 w/ free shipping. sign up for a amazon card and get $30 off. pay off cc.

i just got one for $199.99

Here I thought this was an official announcement or something about being able to now download and transfer TV/Movies to the Zune. What a dissapointing thread bump.

Can you only use it with Windows XP? I want one, but I'm not using XP on this computer (my main one). And I really don't feel like switching to my other computer just for that.

Seems like only XP and later software:

wow, first msstyle i have seen released and its at the end of xp's forefront life.

edit: can we get an official zune thread, so we can keep track of things like this, plus reviews of official product, etc? i'll start it if we can decide where it will reside (xbox 360 forum for example)

Done. If mods want to move the thread, so be it. Even though the Zune doesnt have too much functionality with the X360 at the time, more disscussions will come up as they upgrade the firmware and release newer features.

For those of you looking for a nice durable good looking case for your Zune, check this out. I can't officially comment on it since I dont have it, but after seeing and reading about it I'm going to have to get one:

I know the Zune looks better naked but if you really need a sturdy case or if you happen to be a butterfingers this would be great. I like the bulky look of it but then again, it does look bulky now that I think about it. I mainly like it because I plan to use it in my car as soon as I get a new car stereo that supports mp3 players, and I'm afraid that when I'm driving around, it might fall and hit something if I have to break hard or turn sharply, but with this on, I would have no problems.

Need help for all you techies here.

MajorNelson posted this info about a program that puts Youtube videos on your Zune, I tried it out on some 24 S6 episodes and when I try to put it on my Zune i got a message about unable to find "media usage rights"

Through some searching online I found out that if its not official content with rights, you will not be able to put it on your Zune. Is there any way around this? If not, does anyone know if this is how every mp3 player works. I was thinking of exchanging this one for a Creative VisionM. As much as I love it, I hate these damn restrictions :bomb:

Found a way to put DIVX and AVI files on your Zune which you can then play on your X360:

1. Change the extension of the file from .divx or .avi to .wmv
2. Add the .wmv files to your Zune but don't start the sync process
3. change back the extension of the file on your PC back to .divx or .avi
4. Go back to the Zune and sync
5. You know have Divx on your Zune.

I downloaded the 24 episodes in Divx format and now they are on my Zune, going to test them on my 360 a bit later.
What's the advantage of having a divx or avi file instead of wmv?
Right now Zune software only accepts .wmv files. Most ripped files from torrents and such are avaialble in Divx format which has pretty close to DVD quality. The advantage is simply having Divx format vs having to convert it to a smaller more compressed file that loses quality during conversion.

Do you mean add the file to the Zune Library...?? I thought syncing it was putting it on your Zune???

::confused::

Tested it on my 360 from my Zune and the quality is not that great although it looks a lot better it still stretches the video. Atleast it looks awesome on my Zune.

Ah, okay, that's cool. Better quality is always better. Thanks for the tip.

Unless you've got some sort of magic files, I don't think this is actually putting DivX movies on the Zune. Looks like all that's happening is that you're tricking it into allowing the file to be added to the Sync list by renaming it as a format it allows. Then it still down-converts it to WMV as normal.

Did the DivX files you sync'd not undergo conversion in the Zune software before being loaded on the player?

of course it converts the file. the point is you can put your video files on the zune with out downloading some other software. pretty sweet work around.

I don't know about anyone else, but it never sounded like it was presented as a work-around. It reads like there is some miraculous means of putting a full-resolution DivX movie on the player or that some sort of hardware-level support for MPEG-4 files has been discovered. I'd like to ask that it be better clarified in the first post.
Can someone be so kind to PM me with a link to a good DVD ripper for the Zune? :)

I know SOMEONE knows.

Thanks :D
