Define "true role-playing".

I don't like putting RPG as a genre because it seems awkward to me.

Like saying First Person Shooter Game, Real Time Strategy Game....and so on. So I just put the actual genre - First person shooter, roleplaying...so on :)

If I were to define roleplaying I would say it's when one of my wives dress a Mary Jane, the other dress like Gwen Stacy and I dress like Venom and Spidey is off world ;)

Well, the "role-play" part of it is pretty well defined, and I'm just curious how they go about it. Is it more Baldur's Gate than Icewind Dale, so to speak.

Sweat Life

Simulation/Life/Managment
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Other

Brian Handy's Sweat Life is an experimental art game with minimalist aesthetics and an interesting take to the depiction of a sweatshop worker's turbulent existence. Instead of having you issue commands from afar, Sweat Life will have you in the thick of the action yourself. Okay. Perhaps 'action' might not be the best word for it. Mind-numbing drudgery is probably a better description for things. A vast majority of your time in this game is going to be spent hammering away at your keyboard and struggling to ensure that the character does not break down from stress.

It's not as easy as it sounds. You're going to have to juggle your avatar's various needs and moods, a tricky task given that he appears to be somewhat emotionally fragile. You're probably going to find yourself restarting more than once. - IndieGames.com

Megazell's Comment - Quite possibly the hardest game on this list to date!

Hapland 1
Hapland 2
Hapland 3

Puzzle
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Mayhem

Here's one from the distant past. The Hapland series is the result of Robin Allen's twisted ingenuity and a rather comical albeit violent set of puzzle games.

For the most part, gameplay will consist of you clicking on various things in the game's world in order to precipitate certain events. Some events will require pin-point precision, others will entail repeated attempts. The objective here is, for the most part, to get your little stick guy where he needs to go. Easy as it sounds, you're probably going to commit mass stick man genocide before you finish this game. There are no guides, no hints, nothing to indicate what you should and should not do. Trial and error will be your only companions here. It's a rather vexing experience but one that is strangely compelling, nonetheless.

I remember spending an inordinate amount of time on this unholy trinity of Flash-based browser games. If you haven't, for some reason, seen them before, you can check out all three games here. Heck, I'm replaying them for nostalgia's sake too.

The Convergence

Action/Platformer/Puzzle
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Fantasy

The Convergence is a fun puzzle game that takes inspiration from inverse gravity games like Terry Cavanagh's VVVVVV and Miniclip's Gravity Guy. Players control a pair of loving couples who has to reach their respective switches to proceed from one level to the next, with the challenge being that one character will mimic every move that the other makes (but in reverse).

The game was made to celebrate the developer's ten year anniversary with his wife (on the 3rd of November), which would explain the lovey-dovey feel of this short flash project. Convergence is also available to download from the Chrome Store, although it seems to run a bit slower on Chrome compared to IE and Firefox. - IndieGames.com

PoleRiders

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Other

This is PoleRiders, a new game from QWOP and GIRP developer Bennett Foddy. It's a two-player game, although it does have a practice area where a single-player can practice their polevaulting skills. Oh, it's all about polevaulting, by the way.

PoleRiders is essentially Bennett's own take on Nidhogg, with two players looking to push each other backwards along a straight plane, but with poles instead of swords. There's a ball on some string above the battlefield, and the idea is to vault off the floor and kick the ball towards your opponent's castle. Players can stand on each other's poles, vault into each other, all kinds of crazy messy stuff.

It's hilarious, with plink-plonking noises to accompany both characters running around - but if you're aware of Bennett's past releases, you'll have guessed that already. Grab a friend and give it a play. - IndieGames.com

Megazell's Comment - It would be best to play this game via Joy2Key and 2 gamepads. :)

Castlevania Quest

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Fantasy
Theme: Horror

As the first game in the Castlevania Quest series, this unofficial fan made title is remake of Konami's Castevania on the NES (which was originally a PC game). The difference is that it uses Simon's sprite from Castlevania II: Simon's Quest, Has all new levels and an all new soundtrack. Its also a really small download that will give you a nice ten level romp.

Castlevana Quest is a fun clone made by the same folks who bought you Dracula's Shadow. Its a remake of the first Castlevania but its more of an overhaul that gives us all new levels, music and a boss battle life bar.

Dracula's Shadow

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Fantasy
Theme: Horror

Dracula's Shadow is an unofficial fan made sequel to Konami's Castlevania II: Simon's Quest. This game adds original sprites, new levels, new characters as well as old ones and new entries into the soundtrack. This is the second game in the unofficial Castlevania Quest series. This is definitely one of the better Castlevania Clones as it even adds a save system and cleans up a lot of the bugs that NES Castlevania II actually had.

If you are looking for a rather lengthy Castlevania Clone, you have found it. Multiple characters, new levels, new sprites and a new soundtrack to boot make this one of the best fan games on the web. It feels like you are playing Castlevania II but it's much more polished than the original. Get yourself a good control pad for this one. Its worth the download.

Return of Egypt

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly
Not Fullscreen
Gamepad Support - Yes

Theme: Fantasy
Theme: Horror

What do you get when you mix The Ten Commandments with Castlevania: Symphony of the Night? Moses fighting a Golden Calf Boss to the death! Retrn of Egypt is a SOTN Clone with an original story and characters. If you like Castlevania and are intrigued with the thought of anime Moses, give this one a try.

Forget plagues. The wrath of Moses is coming to town to unleash a can of whoop heine (sorry, its based on religion) on all of the Egyptian Zombies. Moses has his beard, robe and he can do the Samus run from Super Metroid! He can also take down Golden Calves with his mighty staff. Return of Egypt also has a kick ass soundtrack to boot. This game is also quite challenging with its various amount of enemies. This game is in Japanese and has some occasional Anime style story boards. Just download it :-).

Megazell's Comment - The game is in Japanese but 100% playable. It comes ready to play with gamepads if you like. Plays very much like Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night. Xenophage: Alien Bloodsport

Fighting
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Horror

"...revolutionary game design, it may indeed knock fighting fans into another universe of apocalyptic action." -- Strategy Plus Magazine

Xenophage is a fighting game in the same genre as Mortal Kombat. This game features scrolling arenas that also zoom in and out, depending on how far apart the fighters are from each other. This is a unique feature in fighting games. The fighters all come from unique alien planets, so they look very cool and unusual. It's up to you to figure out their special abilities and moves.

Megazell's Comment - So if you been following the list you are probably wondering why I am posting some of these old school games that look horrible. Recently, I've been taking a trip down memory lane with some of the games because some of the kids at the center asked me what did I use to play. So I rather show them then talk. S.W.I.N.E.

Real Time Strategy
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes

Theme: Military
Theme: Humor

S.W.I.N.E. is a real-time strategy game in a 3D environment. It looks a bit like Emperor: Battle for Dune, but that's where the similarity ends. In S.W.I.N.E., you do not command humans or robots but - as the name suggests - animal army :)

The story goes like this: On the 3rd of August, the Swine National Army invaded CarrotLand, home of the Rabbit nation. The poor Rabbits were defeated within two weeks, only a small pack survived and is now planning the counterstrike.

In the first campaign, you are to command the Rabbit forces in their nearly hopeless battle against the evil Swine. The second - and much harder - campaign lets you lead the mighty army of the Swine.

The game has a neat concept: you cannot build anything on the battlefield - you select your units before you start the mission. You can take special repair units with you which can recover damaged and even dead units on the fly - for a cost, of course.

S.W.I.N.E. is a RTS game alright, but it doesn't take itself too serious. There are over 6000 speech samples for the Swine and Rabbit soldiers who comment on anything they see or do. When you blast something up, it'll explode in a colorful firework - there's no violence involved. 22 missions (11 for each campaign) and 10 additional multi-player maps and three difficulty settings provide long-lasting fun.

Full Spectrum Warrior

First Person Shooter/Third Person Shooter
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes

Theme: Military

Full Spectrum Warrior is a real-time tactics videogame. It was developed by the Institute for Creative Technologies in association with Pandemic Studios and published by THQ. It was released on June 1, 2004 for the Xbox, September 21, 2004 for Windows and on March 23, 2005 for the PlayStation 2. The game uses the Havok 2 physics engine, featuring realistic manipulation of objects in the game environment and ragdoll physics.

Pandemic released a sequel, Full Spectrum Warrior: Ten Hammers, on March 27 in North America and June 23, 2006 in Europe.

The game has been adapted by psychologists to assist veterans from Iraq overcome the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder.

As of September 29, 2008, the game has been released as a free download, sponsored by the United States Army. It is currently not supported in Canada.

Megazell's Comments: It was quite desolate to find a game online when we tried to get online with this in the center. Setting up a room was easy enough and we mostly went through via LAN. The single player is great though and one of the pet projects for the kids is to make a server for their games that have no dedicated servers up.

Theme: Fantasy

Last Scenario is a game made using the popular RPGMaker XP. Tiles, music and sound effects are standard material that is included with the package, but most of the character portraits, sprites and backgrounds seen in this release were created by the developer.

Known Issues - Font issues

Last Scenario uses the MS Gothic font, which is not installed by default on all Windows versions. If you do not have it, the font can be downloaded here. There is also a known issue when playing Last Scenario on Windows Vista where no text shows up at all. If this problem occurs, following these steps may fix it:

* Go to Configuration Screen, then to Regional Settings
* Go to the Administrative tab and set language for non-unicode programs to Japanese
* Reboot your PC. At this point, Last Scenario should be unable to find MS Gothic and revert to Courier New.
* Go back to Regional Settings and set the language for non-unicode programs to its original language.
* Reboot your PC again. Now, Last Scenario should properly use MS Gothic.

My God. I peel my eyes off this forum for a few days while I steep myself in Dragon Age goodness, and this topic just explodes out of proportion.

A challenge to you, Megazell. Ever consider hosting your own website with your gargantuan list of Free and Legal Games? I mean, it has been done before, but not to the point where you link youtube gameplay videos and whatnot.

I say this because a vbulletin powered forum can't really be used as a user-friendly database. If you were able to host the site, and present your database in a userfriendly way, then you would do us CAGs a service.

Is the list slowing down the forum?

I actually stop posting on another forum because the thread would take mins to load. So far I have not noticed that yet.

I've been thinking about doing it but I don't have much time to run a site. I tried a blog but it did not have a way to sort the list by genre which made it just like a forum.

Know of any free hosting site that may sort a list posted?
