Varia

Shooter/Vertical
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Science Fiction

Varia is a game I made for the SHMUP-DEV Competition 2k7 Round 2, in which it came in first place. It is a vertical shooter like Kairuga, although this time not a computer remake, but a mix of several classic japanese shmups coupled with my own twists. The theme of the competition was "Options", basically the ghost ships in the Gradius series or any type of satellite.

The way the options work in Varia is similar to the way they worked in Gradius series - the options trail after you, and one of the abilities that you have in both games is the ability to freeze your options into their relative positions. Gradius V has a lot more ways to use your options, but I felt the freeze method worked very well. I came upon the idea of letting the player to be able to absorb an enemy weapon with the options that you can get from power-ups. You have to freeze the options in place and "catch" an enemy shot, which you'll be able to use to destroy the enemies in return. There are 10 different types of shots you can absorb.

Not a fan of ASCII graphics, but I like dabbling in some Nethack, paired with a pretty graphical interface (of which, I don't remember the name now... might have to google that).

This is quickly becoming a last-minute contender for "Thread of the Year", considering it is excelling at combining two of the strongest CAG tenets: Cheap (Free) & Gaming.

Great work. Keep 'em coming.

Zylatov Sisters

Shooter/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Science Fiction

Chris DeLeon led a team of 10 developers at Georgia Tech working on Zylatov Sisters, a one- or two-player high score survival game playable locally on one keyboard. Players jump and shoot everything in sight in the fixed pixelated arena until they run out of lives or fail to resuscitate their partner.

The developers have been open about their Super Crate Box, Bubble Bobble, and pinball inspirations. The stages have horizontal screen wrapping like Bubble Bobble, and the enforcer that comes out if one takes too long also is a Bubble Bobble nod.

The game is hard. DeLeon describes Zylatov Sisters as a fixed difficulty game, "tuned and paced to the difficulty of pinball in terms of approximate expected time per ball/life." The blog further describes events I haven't lived long enough to see. "Stringing together frags raises the player's multiplier, with special events happening at 5X (crate appears with special weapons or extra lives), 10X (temporary invulnerability), and 15X (instant level clear)."

DeLeon tells IndieGames that single and multi-player actually offer two different experiences. "Treat single player as a chance to learn the weapons, enemies, levels, and practice basic techniques, but the real game is sitting next to another player and keeping each other alive. Certain support weapons, available only in co-op, will make a big difference, too!" - IndieGames.com

Megazell's Comment - I highly recommend you enjoy this game with Joy2Key and 2 gamepads.

rRootage is a shoot 'em up viewed from a top-down perspective, comprised solely of boss battles against large abstract spacecraft attacking the player with intricate barrages of projectiles. The game featured multiple modes: "normal", "Psy", "Ika" and "GW"; the latter three inspired by Psyvariar, Ikaruga and Giga Wing, respectively. The game was ported to the iPhone and iPod touch by developer Lahzrog Games and released as a free download on iTunes. GamesRadar described the game as "great" and "full of win". Macworld acknowledged the game was esoteric but praised its "classic fast paced action", awarding it a maximum five stars. However, the reviewer noted the iPhone version sometimes ran more slowly than intended.

The PC section isn't so popular and typically there's little disruption to need frequent moderation. You should just look at who's currently online on the main section of the forums and PM any white bolded names if you really need anything.

Or just PMing any moderator would probably work.

I vaguely recall... Linkin? being the one who stickied the old Starcraft thread. 'Course, that won't work anymore. I'll send a few PMs off on behalf of this thread.

I posted a version of that one. One of my personal favorites.

There is one SHUMP that I have been looking for quite some time and never been able to find it. Came out in 1998. It was a SHUMP in which the shooter was a human running instead of a ship. Almost like a top down contra. I never ended it...and I lost it during the "Great Reformat of 98..."

Very nice work on the thread. The only free game that I can think of that could be added to this list is Gunbound.

Pteroglider
Megazell's Top Pick

Shooter/Vertical
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Science Fiction

Pteroglider is a fun and innovative incarnation of the classic arcade space shooter genre. It is aimed at players who enjoy dynamic and challenging games, that are easy and fun to play, yet require a fair dose of skill to master.

Mouse Targeting

Contrary to most other arcade space shooter games, Pteroglider does not limit your angle of fire to a straight vertical line. It enables you instead to target your enemies using the mouse. Until now destroying your enemies, while not absorbing damage has been a matter of luck - With Pteroglider it's all a matter of skill.

Profile System and Online Scores

Pteroglider features a simple yet extremely handy save game system that stores the name of your profile, game progress and score along with personal settings such as mouse sensitivity and sound/music volume level. Each time you start a new game session with any of your profiles, you can choose to start from any difficulty level and stage, provided you have previously achieved it.

Apart from that, with a single mouse click you can send your scores to the online ranking, to match yourself against players from around the globe. This feature requires no registration - in case when your profile name is already used by someone, the server will automatically assign a unique id number to your Profile Name so that you can easily recognize which entry is yours!

Endless gameplay

Pteroglider features four themed stages: Nebula, Bio, Warp and Ion Strom. Each of them has a different horde of enemies that use distinct strategies and shoots as well as a massive and deadly end stage boss. We tried to make the stages as different and contrasting as possible, so each one has a different dynamic, multi-layered background and an experience boosting original music soundtrack that suits the look and feel of the stage.

Every time you pass all four stages of Pteroglider you gain access to a higher difficulty level, so that you can test yourself against enemies that inflict more damage and implement more aggressive strategies. If the game gets too difficult though, you can always go back to previous levels and collect more upgrade boosters or simply have a more relaxing gameplay.

What's more, the groups of enemies attack in a random order, so no game is exactly the same! Watch out, some of the combination of enemies are deadly!

Third Person Shooter
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Horror

The Suffering is a video game developed by Surreal Software and published by Midway Games, released in 2004 for the Xbox, PlayStation 2 and PC. The game featured monster designs by Stan Winston. The Suffering, one of Midway's best releases (and easily their best release from 2004) was recently re-released as an ad-supported free game. It's bloody, more than a little scary, and manages to merge third-person action and scares in an oddly compelling way. It was good enough to warrant a great sequel as well as a movie in production.

Voxelstein 3D

First Person Shooter
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Other

Voxelstein 3D is an FPS game inspired by Wolfenstein 3D. The game uses Ken Silverman's VOXLAP engine to render voxels in software. The levels in the game are fully destructible - and by fully we mean fully.

The game world is built from tiny cubes called voxels. There are over 37 million in the first level. Rendering a world like this is slow (especially without hardware acceleration), but there is an advantage: voxels can be added, removed or otherwise altered very very quickly. This enables all kinds of cool stuff, including fully destructible worlds!

You're ready to have your brain battered around on a Monday morning, right? Craequ is Jonathan Whiting's (Collateral, Stalwart) Ludum Dare 22 entry, and it's a bit brilliant. The protagonist is stuck in a world full of blocks that have strange symbols on them, and must shift the blocks around to explore the adjoining rooms.

Working out exactly how it all fits together is your first task - I'm not going to spoil it for you here, but it does take a few minutes to understand exactly what is going on, and what is required of you. Once you've got that down, Craequ reveals itself to be incredibly clever, with a puzzle mechanic that works so well - it's got a little bit of Continuity to it, although it's far more complicated and rewarding than that. - IndieGames.com

Deadly Stars

Top Down Shooter
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

If you have not played Deadly Stars, you have no idea what a cool space shooter is. Using advanced 3D technology. Deadly Stars features top-notch graphics, excellent sound effects and tons of blasting fun. The question is can you handle so much space fighting?

Deadly Stars is not just any top-down shooter. This game not only features classic gameplay but amazing graphics, which aren't just eye-candy, and an interesting strategy element.

You play the role of a pilot whose mission is to battle through the rogue Emperor's pirate armada which has forcibly seized power. You must inform the imperial troops about the rebellion, but they are quite a distance away and your path is blocked by the enemy. Luckily, your ship is designed for long-term travel, which translates into a huge capacity for firepower.

Megazell's Comment - This game use to come free with no strings attached. Now it is sponsored by GameTop.com which will open a window to their site when you finish playing the game. I am looking for my old version of it and will upload it to mega upload once I locate it.

TAGAP: The Apocalyptic Game About Penguins is a freeware game where you play the part of Pablo, a cyber-penguin used in vile drug experiments and who's had enough of being guinea pig for Dr. Glowenko.

Dr. Glowenko is a mad scientist who succeeded to connect living brain into a computer with the aid of his designdrug, TAGAP (Tissue-Augmenting, Green, Addictive Pill). Your task is to kill everything and locate the exit. Keep doing this until you face the big boss and nail it to win the game.

Megazell's Comment - One of the best side scroller shooters made to this date. The game has a lot to be proud of. The weapons along with their secondary attacks are balanced and awesome to use. The challenge level of this game is great since your character waddles, swims and fly vehicles to achieve his goal of destruction against NON-STOP enemies. Plenty of hidden areas and unlock-ables in this game. It's almost a crime to get it for free. There is a lot of homage to class PC side scrollers like ABUSE and DUKE NUKEM.

Megazell's Comment - This was one of the first FREE and LEGAL games I ever played on the PC. My expectations were very low but the game was really well done. Lots of in game jokes about other RPGs that are some what subtle and yet very very outlandish. The had me laughing so much that when it ended I was a little sadden by it. Remember what it was like being young and awkward in college? There you are, standing with a drink in hand as you scour the crowd for a likable face. You find one and address them in conversation, hoping perhaps to net some form of affection from the other party. You stammer helplessly, fumbling for words and alcohol. You talk for a while. Then, at some point, you go for a kiss only to have them flee a moment later.

If you needed a recap on what that was like, you should probably check out Radstrononimical's Ultimate Flirt-Off. Unlike most games that revolve around human mating habits, Ultimate Flirt-Off is focused on the ungainliness of the process. Essentially a quick-time response game, Ultimate Flirt-Off will have you choosing a gender for yourself and the object of your desire before dropping you into the middle of a conversation. There, you will have to select words in order to construct coherent sentences. Much like in real life, a drink of your beer will allow you to stall for time. It will also cause you to slur even more. Realistic, eh?

Overall, Ultimate Flirt-Off is a simple yet interesting experience that will likely have you cringing in remembrance and snickering occasionally to yourself. - Indiegames.com

Yo, gamemaster MZ so how do you go about finding your free games? Also if you have any more "horror", "squad-based', or "superhero" recommendations that'd be totally badical.

I have a strong hate in my heart to spend money on things that are considered a "WANT." So some of that helps.

Being honest...I use Google.

Tremulous

First Person Shooter/Third Person Shooter/Real Time Strategy
Single Player - No
Multiplayer - Yes

Theme: Horror

Tremulous is a free, open source game that blends a team based FPS with elements of an RTS. Players can choose from 2 unique races, aliens and humans. Players on both teams are able to build working structures in-game like an RTS. These structures provide many functions, the most important being spawning. The designated builders must ensure there are spawn structures or other players will not be able to rejoin the game after death. Other structures provide automated base defense (to some degree), healing functions and much more...

Player advancement is different depending on which team you are on. As a human, players are rewarded with credits for each alien kill. These credits may be used to purchase new weapons and upgrades from the "Armoury". The alien team advances quite differently. Upon killing a human foe, the alien is able to evolve into a new class. The more kills gained the more powerful the classes available.

The overall objective behind Tremulous is to eliminate the opposing team. This is achieved by not only killing the opposing players but also removing their ability to respawn by destroying their spawn structures.

Megazell's Comment - Great Game. If you are a fan of Half-Life and Half-Life mods - This game is inspired by the mod "Natural Selection" for Half-life. This is a fun game with so many different ways to win that pros and noobs alike have a fair shot of winning every match.

Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy

Third Person Shooter
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Gamepad Support - Yes

Theme: Science Fiction

Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy is a video game developed by Midway Games for the Xbox, PlayStation 2 and Microsoft Windows PC platforms. It was also being developed for the Nintendo GameCube titled ESPionage but later cancelled. The game was released in North America on June 14, 2004; the European release followed on October 1, 2004. On June 9, 2008, the full version was offered as a free download hosted by fileplanet with in-game advertising, but also allowing to purchase the game in order to remove the advertising. At the time a FilePlanet subscription (also free) was required to receive the game. Now the game can found on many different hosting sites.

A traditional shooter in many respects, Psi-Ops banks on its ragdoll physicsHavok 2.0) and variety of psychic powers to differentiate itself. In Japan and Southeast Asia/East Asia, the game was marketed by CapcomPsi-Ops: Psychic Operation.

In the game, the player is Nick Scryer, a "PSI-Operative" whose mind has been wiped to allow him to infiltrate a terrorist organization. However, he is captured and must fight his way out with the help of Sara, a double agent. As he progresses, he regains his PSI powers.

It is often compared with the video game Second Sight from Free Radical Design.

Legend of Princess

Action
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Gamepad Support - Yes

Theme: Fantasy

Ah, yes, my one fangame! This whole idea came from joining the desire to make a Zelda-game and wanting to try out making an action game that has its levels change slightly depending on your equipment.

It was a simple idea and it was really fun to make this using satirical renderings of famous characters, but since it's a fangame I couldn't make a whole game out of it. It feels that time is better spent on original creations!

Have fun! Beware, though, it doesn't really play like a Zelda-game so there's always the chance that you may not enjoy it as much. This is in no way how I'd actually want a true Zelda game to be either, it was just for fun. - Creator

Megazell's Comment - A very short game that needs to be made into a full experience!

I actually have a lot more games that are free on my list but they are mods to existing games.

A great many of them have Super Hero themes because I am an avid comic book fan.

The thing is I want to keep this list simple and have people download - click - and play.

If they have to do special installations - Half the audience will die out because most people are use to pressing X and seeing colors - You dig?

So when I have extra time I am going to divide my free gaming database and post another ongoing thread for mods.

Wait whoa, Psi-Ops is free now? Awesome, never knew that.
Legend of Princess is pretty awesome. The soundtrack's superb.

I suggest going over the DigiPen games. Namely, Empyreal Nocturne, Synaesthete (AWESOME), Narbacular Drop (predecessor of Portal)
