it's looking like the "always on" for gaming actually applies to the rumored $99 Xbox 360 console since it doesn't have an optical drive and is meant to counter AppleTV, Google TV, Roku, etc.

http://www.vgleaks.c...x-roadmap-2013/

Microsoft is working hard in its new strategy for the next years. The company wants to expand its Xbox brand with two new Xbox. One would be next-gen, the other one would be a new redesign for Xbox 360. Take in mind the Wii Mini, MS would like to offer something similar to Nintendo. This cheap model would be focused as a set top box product, although you will be able to load games too, but the games should be load directly from the HDD. This Xbox wouldn’t have disc drive.

When the Durango (game machine) launches, it will not support backwards compatibility for 360 games out of the box. Instead, this functionality will come from the other unit that will be networked with the Durango to provide this (not unlike the DVD add-on for the original Xbox).

The purpose of the smaller Xbox unit is to compete with Apple TV, but also provides XBLA and 360 game support which will give it an edge over Apple TV. The rumors of “always online required” comes from the smaller Xbox unit which may not have a disc drive and like Apple TV it would require a network connection and internet to provide any real functionality. It may be possible they will design both consoles to be stackable.

Durango itself will also always be online like any other device (correct with rumors), but it will not be a requirement to play local content and it will not prevent playing used games. Putting in an Xbox 360 disc into Durango will prompt the user to attach the supporting device that is sold separately. By separating the two devices and their functions it will ensure price competitiveness for both pieces of hardware. Microsoft’s delay in announcing these products from April goes more inline with not having a physical set of devices to show (among specification updates), which should be ready by May or June when this information is officially released.

So if all this is true, lets assume it is for now, then the big question is will the Durango (next XBox) be backward compatible with being able to network to older X360s that owners own now, or do these X360 owners have to upgrade to both the Durango and updated X360 model to be backwards-compatible, and play their last-gen games?

Why would you have to update the xbox 360? That's the point of a console right...?

for your next Xbox to be able to play 360 discs, you'd have to physically connect that new 360 to the new console. I can't believe they could possibly do this over a network connection. There's no way you could run 360 games on the next Xbox by transferring the data back and forth over a network connection to your old 360. Even a gigabit connection can't possibly do this well. Even the ancient USB 2.0 connection on the 360 isn't enough. Geez. USB 2.0 is one of the things holding back the Kinect on the 360 (the Kinect can do a lot more on the PC than on the 360 because the PC has multiple USB controllers with dedicated bandwidth).

and this is the reason why I think you'd have to get the $99 360 if you want to play 360 games on the next Xbox. But you already have a 360. You can run your games on that. And if it's on the same Xbox Live network, you aren't missing out with your friends who have the next Xbox.

The only reason I would say to get the $99 360 is if you want a small streaming box. maybe for your other rooms. maybe you want to save on some electricity. maybe you like the idea of a small Xbox for the WAF. And since this cheaper Xbox has no optical drive, it would only make sense if you have a good collection of XBLA, XBLIG, and GoD games (unless you had that next-gen Xbox).

definitely getting it at launch barring some incredibly stupid announcement, always on doesn't bother me much since I'm connected to XBL all the time anyway just as long as MS has no server problems. Now no used games might make me think about it since I buy a good amount of used games or rent or try used from Gamestop but even then would still buy it. Really time for next-gen this one has lasted longer than any other

I don't intend to get the new xbox unless it has a good amount of JRPG, but I am just curious why ppl balk at the $500 price tag.

A new phone on contract cost $200. PSP vita $250, litterally 300-350 to get it in running shape (screen protector, memory card, carry case). an ipad cost $500. a good video card cost $300. roku which for many can be replace by the few apps on gaming console cost $100.

a gaming architecture designed to be relevant for the next 5-7 years debuting at $500 seem reasonable to me. Question is whether it can deliver the gaming experience that I want, cost imo is relatively cheap, even at $500.

A good summary article, http://www.computera...ation-handbook/

I don't think you'll be able to totally replace your cable box. There will be services that will allow you to do that, ie Hulu, Amazon Instant Video and such but it's more likely they'll just connect to the existing box. Not me though, I cut savings and dropped cable half a year ago, since I felt I didn't use it enough as I would normally game after work than watch TV.

For the link, keep in mind the main word speculation. :booty:

I miss cable for one thing, Sports. Basically ESPNs as the internet ESPN3 blacks out local games that are on the main ESPNs. Not world breaking, but cutting $50 off bills is a good trade.

Same dude. Ever since the ESPN app updated to the "Watch ESPN" criteria, I feel like every game has been blacked out, or I don't get it since I only have DSL and not FIOS. Missed a bunch of college football games this year and rarely get any NBA, but dropping a $100 cable bill for now 3 years is worth it IMO. Still get the NFL in HD over the air, which is what matters.

Yeah I understand totally, I mainly picked up cable so I could watch hockey - this during the time of the lockout - and then after Football wrapped up and I didn't think hockey was gonna go this season I cancelled.

I subscribed and use NHL Gamecenter Live on the 360 but yes many games get blacked out and that app has horrendous buffering issues. Thankfully watching games on NHL.com rectifies that problem but you don't get as good as quality this way.

That's why I hope Microsoft continues to push, or even develop more, their live event player. I overally enjoyed watching the eSports CoD finals and I don't even play that game online regularly. It'll all come down to content providers and licenses for MLB, NHL, etc.

Not to mention they finally made an app I have been yelling for them to ever since the original XBL. A tournament app for the major sports. About time they did something that is so simple.

No they literally made a tourney app on the Xbox. Haven't played with it as I traded in my last years sports games, but they had it on the main page for a while.

Depends on launch titles.. Coming out during ski season doesn't help. GTA 5 is the only game I'm planning to buy at release the rest of the year. Bioshock Infinite was a big let down.

Not sure, bought xbox and 360 at launch and participated in the original live beta program, but finding myself enjoying my PS3/Vita more these days.

Really depends on whether or not it has any exclusives I care about, otherwise might just go with PS4 eventually.
