Street Figher IV Unveiled
Exclusive first ever screenshot and details for Capcom's franchise revival.
By Matt Leone, 12/06/2007
Numbers are supposed to be impressive, right? Well, it's been 10 years, two hardware generations, and about seventeen thousand rumors since the last pure number Street Fighter came around. And today we have the first ever official details on Street Fighter IV.

We don't blame you if your eyes have already skipped down to the screenshot lower on the page (yes, that's from the game engine). Take your time. But we've got some information as well, so the rest of this is probably worth reading when you get a chance.

Though the screenshot doesn't answer this question outright, we can confirm that the game's graphics are polygonal but the gameplay is strictly 2D. There will be new moves, locations, and gameplay features, while the standard six button control scheme remains. Ryu and Ken return along with Chun-Li and Dhalsim, but beyond that the character roster is a mystery. And then there's the issue of what platform(s) the game will end up on, which at this point Capcom is keeping close to its chest (if you search 1UP's database, you'll find listings for arcade, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions, but those are just guesses based on the graphical quality).

SCREENSHOT: Click on the image above to see the high-res. version.

For the full reveal of the game -- including hands-on impressions, a rundown of the new gameplay system, and loads of details on new features -- look for the January 2008 issue of EGM in stores soon and hitting subscribers any day now. And then after you check the issue out, keep your eye on 1UP's Street Fighter IV hub page for ongoing coverage continuing into January.

Anyway, are you still reading this? Didn't you see the screenshot above? Click it and look at the larger version! All your friends are doing it...
And here's the screen shot:

To anyone that heard me say it when the game was first announced...

Told ya so ;)

Not really a surprise given the trailer, but I can't tell if it will be a visual stunner or not. Maybe it is me but the character design seems weird. I am sure that it will be nice to see in motion. Damn next gen with screenshots never really doing a game justice. Anyways, looking forward to it and this better be for xbox 360. Or come out around the time I cave in and buy a PS3.

I'm not sure if Ryu is ready to rumble or about to ask one of the background characters for directions to Man Mo Temple.
That looks really ugly.
really? I think it look pretty good. It'll probably look better in motion.
Is Ryu getting any new moves that will make use of his apparent massive unit?
You win :D That is quite ugly indeed. They either need to scrap it and redo the graphics or we'd better hope it looks better in action.

The gameplay will look like how the trailer did... I posted this awhile back and the fact that it was 2D fighting using 3D models but edit'd it out in fear of getting owned up... X_X ...

The game has been in development through several stages over the years, but only took off over the last year and a half... It's been in playable form since as early as March of this year.

Hadicken!

I think it looks fantastic, did you expect gears of war?

It really has a drawing come to life feel to it, without being cell shaded. Looks really impressive, and I bet it will be FAST AS HELL, and even smoother.

Could of been this.

watch out, gandalf is confirmed along with Hobbit Ryu. Looks good, and I'm more concerned about gameplay than the graphics though it's kinda sad to see 2d fade away :(

my only guess for 3d is it's more feasable to make a large scale fighter since each fighter's sprites don't have to be drawn to death.

It'd be nice if... since they're using 3D models and all... if they had customization like other fighting games...

That'd be nice wouldn't it?

;)

Customization is overdone. I realize it's coming because of the way you posted but I've never really paid much attention to it in either VF4 or Tekken 5. There's something iconic about the way Ryu (or Ken, or Chun Li) looks that shouldn't be messed with.

So is gameplay going to be similar to "The Rumble Fish"? That game used 3-D characters and backgrounds but played 2-D if I am not mistaken.

I would love to see some type of Customization for Online play. Where you can just take the character models but changed their name and the look then take them online. I figure it would be a neat way to implement an online mode but still keep it fair because the moveset and strength of character will just be based off an existing Street Fighter character. The fun would be making your online character look anyway you want them to be. This is now possible since the graphics have moved to 3-D.

I understand. Thank you very much.

if it played anything like rumble fish but with SF flare, I think my penis would get to the game DVD before I would.

This looks amazing! Coming from a die-hard SF fan and one who wants to do tournaments and all....this gets my seal of approval. Now all I care about is gameplay. :D

Funny....I frequent one of the top, if not the top 2D fighting games forum and they embraced this look for the most part. CAG seems more negative about this.....not a knock because it is peoples opinion and all, but I figured my forum would have be more criticial since they have a more vested intrested (EVO tournaments) in it. :whistle2:s

Come on capcom make the gameplay top notch...you can pull it off!!!! :bouncy:

if it's getting the dedication that SFIIHD is in terms of gameplay focus, it'll be good.

Yea, I would not think they would do anything but the best job. I hope they would let some of the top Tournament players like Justin Wong and Daigo (many others too) have some beta time with it. To find bugs and other things along with it. I wonder if they'll give 4 some of the gameplay elements of third strike? Like parries and good ability for mix ups?

Bah I am getting ahead of myself

2008 is going to be a beastly year for us SF fans. HD Remix and this are instant buys for me.

All I need now is an announcement of Alpha 4 and I am set.
We'll spare you the suspense: Street Fighter IV will feature fully-3D graphics, but gameplay will be purely 2D, retaining the feel of the classic non-EX Street Fighter titles.
The Joystiq quote makes me think this won't play like the EX games which would be a good thing. EX+EX2 were fun but not exactly great games overall. If they are putting the IV name on it, I'm thinking it will definitely hold up. I think the graphics look great. I'm anxiously awaiting more details and some video of it running.

lol... I frequent SRK too... I help out with the EVO tournaments... I'm sure everyone and their mama saw that Daigo vs Justin 3rd strike parry comeback vid... I was there live :) Anyone else see that shit live? I know B:L might have... Not too many hardcore tournament folk that travel to tournies on CAG... (I don't think at least)...

Well... The most important thing about SFIV is that it gets an arcade release in Japan before console... or at least have the ability to patch/make changes easily if it decides to go console first...

I was hoping that they'd use hd sprites... something similar to Guilty Gear... BUt I guess its easier to put 3d models into motion than it is to animate 2d sprites. I'm not too fond of the 3d models though, but that's just Ryu, lets see the rest of the characters.

We should call that Moment the 9th Wonder of the world.. that MF parried the super combo, and then, finished him off w/ a super combo... OMG.. I gots to watch that video again now! I was hoping that 4 would build on the engine from 3, that parry system was so awesome.

I think Capcom will really do a good job with SF4. I'm not worried that it will end up like EX. SF3 shows that when Capcom is ready to progress the series, it is well thought out and takes years of development. The gaps between 2 and 3 and now 4 show they take their time. EX was some sort of bizarre side story.

I'm curious which other characters will return and what the new ones will be. I'm hoping that we'll see Zangief, Alex, Cammy, Vega, Balrog, Sagat, Guile, Yun, Blanka, Rolento, Elena, Ibuki, Bison, and Sean.

Was there seriously that much doubt that SF4 would be 3D graphics, 2D gameplay? Seriously, that's was, if you ask me, as safe a bet as there being a Madden game next year.

Anyways, looks rad. Wanna see it move.

Looks good, but that screen reminds me of Viewtiful Joe, the trailer looked better somewhat. Did you also see that it's developed by DIMPS? I hope they give this game a good ad campaign, it has potential to be a top seller so far.
I wonder if that Chin-Li game is being made at all.

Hrm. I actually kinda like the look -- it's just stylized enough to work. Though, uh, Ryu's junk could use a little toning down. Shen "long" indeed.

The feedback about SFIV on the Capcom forums is sad.

Honestly, people there are complaining about the shape of the background characters heads...

It SERIOUSLY better have Bison.

SF w/o Bison =

One time I went as far as to say that I would kill someone (that I didn't know) in order to have Bison implemented into SF3:3s. I love dat nigga.

I was kidding, of course
Or was I? ;)

To clear a few things up... I'll quote the official press release that just went out last night...

... while the game is played in the classic Street Fighter 2D perspective with additional 3D camera flourishes.
So there ya have it! Honestly... Picture the teaser trailer we saw... on more of a 2D plane... and think of 3D pans/camera angles during certain moves that hit... There should be vids up of it 'soon'...

Also a few other notes...

SFIV will be 60FPS and home console release(s) will have online play. While the actual in game stuff won't look EXACTLY like the trailer, the gameplay will... The parry system is gone and the game takes place after SFII and before SFIII.. Kind of weird how they named it SFIV huh? lol... The new system is kind of like stuff seen in Guilty Gear and Arcana Heart... But I'm not sure I can officially say, I don't even know what the name of the new system is called...

Oh shit, someone leaked out some screens too lolol...

Is it just me, or do the expressions on their faces ruin what could have been a good screenshot. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt though since these were leaked and not official.
