Like the thread title says, I'm looking for some suggestions, mainly for graphic novels, that are worth checking out. I've been away from comics for many, many years, until I read through Joss Whedon's run of Astonishing X-Men. I loved the artwork by John Cassaday in that run, but I don't know any other artists or writers currently considered among the best.

I was always more of a Marvel fan than a DC fan, but I intend to check out The Dark Knight Returns, and The Killing Joke. Also obviously Watchmen. Anything else I shouldn't miss?

By the way, what are the chances that I'd find any of these at my local small-town library?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Batman: Arkham Asylum
Batman: The Long Halloween
Kingdom Come
Preacher Vol. 1: Gone to Texas
The Sandman Vol. 4: Season of Mists
The Sandman Vol. 9: The Kindly Ones
Superman for All Seasons

Just to name a few ;)

Brian Bendis's run on Daredevil

And as previously stated, Y: The Last Man

I second emdub's suggestion of Bendis' run on Daredevil. Daredevil: Born Again is also a must read and one of Frank Miller's finest works.

Pride of Baghdad (read this first and foremost)
Walking Dead
Invincible
Ultimates 1 and 2
Daredevil (Frank Miller run)
Captain America (the recent series)
Batman: Year One
Madman (some of the best experimental art you'll see in a comic can be found in the recent run)
Sandman
Swamp Thing (Alan Moore run)

fuck, anything by Alan Moore.

*EDIT* Might as well add The Flash (Grant Morrison run to the Mark Waid run to the Geoff Johns run AKA AWHOLE lot of solid writting all around for what I think is an underrated character)
Starman
WE3
Exterminators (recently cancelled, but still awesome read)
