Seems like a quality product and hella cool and will probably be pretty limited. Thought I would give everyone a heads up.
That looks amazing. I am hoping someone here will bite the bullet and see how well it actually is. :D
I already preordered. Was 26.75 shipped. They said it shouldn't ship to at least January though. Hopefully Nintendo doesn't shut this down and they ship a quality product.

It looks like they're in Tuscon, which is hours away from me. But shipping is still 6.75. I thought having a closer location for priority would lower the cost of shipping.

Priority only factors in weight, location is irrelevant.
Doesn't selling this violate some sort of law?
I hope so. It makes it feel even more badass.

I mean these guys actually molded characters from clay to make a guide that mimics the Earthbound guide.

That's dedication so hardcore that if it were a DVD, it would be in the section of the store behind a beaded curtain.

I saw someone say that because Nintendo didnt register a trade mark its legal.....but ya the legality of this seems up in the air to me. HOWEVER if it flies under Nintendos radar or Nintendo thinks eh we aint releasing this anyways let them do it......that means this will be not only a helluva cool item but also possibly extremely limited.

Through Paypal when I was trying to figure out how much it was going to ship Scene It, it would cost 4.XX to ship it somewhere it my state, and then 9.XX to ship it to, say Florida.

Hard to say. Clearly NOA would have first crack at the stateside Mother rights but it seems as though the company doesn't care about Mother. It's certainly a grey area. If NOA doesn't issue a cease and desist then I say go for it.

You're right, my mistake

If they let it pass, then it won't be an issue. If not, then let's hope everyone has $26 to blow and get back.
even if I did get burned on Beggar Prince.
why did the game sucked or something? or they didnt send you anything? i was looking into buying that too

I'll also say that the fan effort behind the Mother 3 translation and player's guide is, without a doubt, one of the coolest things I've ever seen in gaming.

the first several (2?) batches were buggy... i.e. not letting you save on certain sega system setups (i.e. genesis with cd or genesis with 32x or cdx).

i assume that's what he means.
Oh wow. That preview literally sold me. Completely and absolutely. But I wonder if this will get pennied out...
um...no, it won't get pennied out, it won't be in stores.

To be clear, we're just talking about the guide, and I'm no copyright lawyer.

Won't the fact that they made their own illustrations protect them? They're writing ABOUT a game, not infringing on it, right?

Paging javerh!

is this site legit? (as in being trustworthy), not sure i wanna give my money to a site that i have no clue about, especially when they're selling something Nintendo could probably kill at any moment.

but i really like the package shown on the site.

fyi, i remember that some dude was selling a fan-made guide for one of their games on eBay and Blizzard stopped him from doing so. correct me if i'm wrong.

1. As far as being reliable not sure, they use google check out though.

2. Blizzard may have also had a trade mark on that item.

screen shots and character designs are copyrighted. nintendo could shut this down at the drop of a hat if they wanted to.

the one glimmer that they won't is that they haven't shut down the fan translation... yet.

They're absolutely trustworthy. I know some of the people designing/packing/shipping these personally, and they are some of the most stand-up people I've ever met. These people take fandom and dedication to a whole new level and they love nothing more than servicing EB fans. You'll definitely get your money's worth and then some.

Preordered mine too... Can't wait to see it.

Maybe they got permission? There are tons of player's guides that are 'Unofficial' with screen shots and all. I think it just takes permission, or licensing rights.

The game was horrible. I liked the fact that a group was releasing a Genisis game longer after its life cycle ended but they should have picked a better game. It's turned me off completely to their next release. To be clear I played Beggar Prince all the way to the very end where the Cat Minister disappeared into his Cat Hole and I could not figure out how to proceed.

Paging javerh!
If it's Nintendo's IP, they have stake in how it's licensed and used.

Man, it's times like these I wish I liked Earthbound. I mean look how cool this is! ARGH! Stupid brain, not liking the same game as a bunch of creative superfans...
Priority only factors in weight, location is irrelevant.
only if it is under 1 pound. After that it does matter

Also there were tons of "unoffical" guide in the past. I owned the unoffical Final Fantasy 3 and Link to the Past guide and they contrain screen shot, map, and character art
tangentially related article about unofficial fan-made guides and their legality:

http://www.joystiq.com/2006/03/28/blizzard-sued-by-unofficial-wow-guide-author/
From one of the articles:
"Kopp's complaint argues that his book does not infringe on any of the companies' copyrights for several reasons: The book presents a disclaimer on its first page about its "unauthorized" nature, contains no copyrighted text or storylines from the game, and makes "fair use" of selected screenshots under copyright law, the complaint said."

And he won, by the way.

Yeah, this guide in a sorts reminds me of the "Totally unauthorized!" guide for Super Mario RPG. It claimed to be unauthorized, but seemed to be legal enough since it was sold in store without issue.
Also, are all strategy guides nowadays authorized? Or were they really not illegal to begin with?

i think even the unauthorized ones have the blessings of the game publisher... the authorized/official ones usually have access to higher quality art and screens because the publisher is providing these, and usually claim developer privy secrets and whatnot.

while many unofficial guides do feature screenshots... dunno if they fall under fair use or they have some sort of blessings, others (at least in the past) have not. take for example this unofficial guide for ffvii by sybex:

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb217/alptreasures/100_8004.jpg

it features descriptive walkthrough and strategy sections, but no screenshots or official (or unofficial) character art.
