DEAD SAmurai 7 Bluray $21.99 Amazon

Lowest price to date on Amazon, but the source material was just a tad blurry and colors wash. I tried watching a few episodes of this series and it just didn't grab me TBH.

The question for me is whether I get this or the Deathnote collection posted the other day.

I wanted to totally abandon the DVD format but I have a feeling Deathnote the cartoon will never see an NA Blu release.

So can anyone compare the shows for me? I one better than the other?

I can't get into this series. I bought the DVD set almost 3 years ago (?) and I struggled to continue watching it... I never did finish it. The 3d CGI elements are pretty crappy and don't look like they mesh at all with the 2d, and the style/character design isn't very good. Nunky is cool... but... otherwise... blah.
How does this compare to the SD version, any reason to upgrade or none all?
Depends how much you enjoy the show. The Blu-ray's video quality is much improved over the slightly-muddy DVDs, and the show was originally produced in HD, so this isn't just a lame upscale.

I enjoy both Samurai 7 and Death Note, but if I had to pick one, I'd go with the latter. Also, Death Note was not produced in HD, so waiting on a Blu-ray release is pointless.

There's plenty of native-HD anime on Blu-ray, but the large majority of older shows being re-released on Blu by Funimation are upscales, sadly. Samurai 7 is one of the few exceptions. Most of the shows that aired in Japan less than two years ago, as well as most movies, are native-HD when released on Blu-ray.
