So I am in a Topics in Literature: Comics and Graphic Novels course here at school and we have to write a thesis on any comic of our choice.

I chose Superman Red Son simply because I love the book and felt it would be something good to write about. I however am having a hard time coming up with something that I could truly delve into and explain using the text. I do not want to do anything political or anything revolving around the comparison of Soviet Russia and the USA and what not.

I was looking at more the concept of how Superman is still the same deep down despite his altered upbringing. Either way however I am not digging that idea too much and am having a hard time concentrating that into an actual statement.

Any input or help or ideas to bounce off of would be greatly appreciated, obviously only if you have read this comic haha.

I would go with the opposite approach.

My idea would be that Superman has a god complex and wants to be the savior of his people. Maybe thats his way of fitting in with society.

you say you don't want to go political but that's basically what you're doing anyway.

here's what you might do. Don't try to avoid it and start of with a TINY few sentences comparing Soviet Russia and US. Then you might want to go over how superman represents the american ideals and the many ways he personifies them. Next you start with soviet ideals, then you paint a picture depicting the type of person who represents those ideals what that person looks like, behaves like etc.

Then you slide into a comparison of RS Superman vs this soviet ideal you described. You can compare and contrast what we expected of SovietMan and what we 'get' from RSSuperman. You talk about the things that are the same and the things that were different. From there you can sorta meld into a conclusion of whatever.

Do you have to use only a single story? If you were going with the "Supes keeps his beliefs" theory, you could also use "superman the Darksied"( he's raised on apocolypse) and there's another story where he's raised by the germans during WW2(will post it when i remeber it).

interesting. never heard of those.

heck if this really is a thesis paper you probably want more material anyway. You could just do it on heroes in alternate timelines. There was a Bruce Wayne Green Lantern I think. Marvel has a whole line of "What if...? I think. Guy Gardener and John Stewart were originally backup plan GLs IIRC

Red Son wasn't as 'ground-breaking' as all the critical reception led me to believe. (it's possible that I may just be that cynical) but while it wasn't anything I couldn't imagine it was well told and at the end of the day that's what's important to me.

The same applies to Sands of Time movie
which wasn't an original take on the game but instead your basic adaption but well done so I'm happy
and Uncharted the game
I had no idea what to expect from, based on the reviews and articles, was going to be the greatest game I've ever seen. It was basically SoT but with guns. I liked Sands of Time and Uncharted waS well voiced so once i toned down my expectations I again was happy
