Duke Nukem In Hot Water...Again

The multiplayer modes for the imminent Duke Nukem Forever have been announced (via the April issue of Official Xbox Magazine) -- and one, dubbed "Capture the Babe," has raised some eyebrows.

The game itself is developer Gearbox Software's take on the classic "Capture the Flag" style of play, where competing teams try to steal a totem and return it to their base.

Only in this case, it's a woman.

If that were all there was to it, few would bat an eye. But when the magazine asserted that the 'babe' would sometimes freak out and have to be calmed by "gently [giving] her a reassuring slap," critics began to erupt.

Can you say "oversensitive"? I mean, an M-rated game should be able to have nearly whatever it wants in it, and if people are really taking the time to make an issue about this GAME and its contents then people need to seriously lighten up. Its not like Duke Nukem has been known as a cute little platformer about rabbits...

How is it in hot water? You make it sound like there's a huge controversy surrounding the game. This is nothing.

theyll always find something to complain about just wait till twisted metal is released. i thought duke was getting cancelled again itll be cool to see what finally comes of decades of work.

Hot water as in a bit of controversy surrounding it. I didn't say politicians were attacking it like devil spawn did I?

Gearbox embraces the "any publicity is free publicity." Also I recall people assuming you were slapping women in the face when really it's just on the butt.

"A man should not slap women in the face as they are docile and fragile creatures who could never withstand the brutal onslaught of a manly man."

I'm no feminist but that line of thinking is just plain wrong-headed.

All notions of chivalry aside, I've seen some 'girl fights' that made me want to curl up in a ball and call my mom.
This sounds EXACTLY like the Snatch multiplayer mode in Postal 2..
And we all know the trouble the Postal series got into. Some of it was funny, but most people (outside of gamers) found it to be disgusting!

About covers it, I think. Sure, it's still (perhaps satirically) sexist. But so is most media. And if you really think video games are going to promote antisocial behavior, this is not the place to start.

Oh no. Think of the CHILDREN.

People are still stuck in the mindset that video games=kids fare and as such should only be about cute fuzzy little bunnies.

Who gives a shit what people outside of gaming think? They're not the target audience, they're not buying the game. Who cares?

I'm pretty sure that slapping a woman on the ass isn't going to be the most sexist thing in the game. Still, they can change it if they want and delay the game for another 2 decades.

This whole ass slapping thing is being extreme for the sake of being extreme and even though that is what this game is all about it still perpetuates a male-centric culture. With that said, why is no one complaining about the name of the mode??? Capture the Babe??? replace flag with babe and you have made women an object for men to fight over controlling. To me that is more disturbing than the ass slapping aspect of it. This is just one example of a much broader problem and people who are disgusted by this need to take a better look at video games as a whole and realize that for the most part they are chauvinistic. Im playing Dragon Age right now and it seems to me like all the demons in the game are bare breasted women. Where was the outcry over that? Games, along with movies and most other media need a gender overhaul in general. Anyone drawing a line between capturing babes being fine but slapping them is over the line needs to take a good look at why one is acceptable while the other is not.

Awesome mode. Games are mainly made by and for men. Not a big deal. If games were made by and for women, they would have Chip N Dale dancers or whatever in games.

No one batted an eye at the mode in Bioshock 2 where you had to capture and hold a kicking and screaming little sister for a set amount of time.

They are both acceptable if you can take a joke.

Patrick Swayze Dance Central with Chris Farley DLC.

You know you'd buy it. Everyone wants Swayze to declare that he won't allow them to be put in the corner.

Announcing your delay via humorous YouTube message doesn't make it any less preposterous. It's been fifteen years. How inept do you have to be to work on this game?

It's not like there's been a shortage of first person shooters in the absence of the Duke Nukem series, so people will live waiting for this game for another month.

Besides which I only ever really liked the third person DN games anyway.

Duke never comes early. Classic.
I am not saying that they shouldn't be making this mode. I was more saying that if this really upsets you(which it has done to some people) then you need to look at the bigger picture and realize that this is only a very small example chauvinism in games. People get excited over small events and then do nothing to fix the bigger problem it represents. These guys are obviously joking and it should be taken as that but unfortunately some people take things too seriously.

As for females in fighting games, in those games you can be male or female equally. For that to be a fair comparison there would also have to be a Capture the Dude mode and Im not playing that shit.
Ummm... don't we beat the shit out of women and kill them in fighting games? Is this 1970?
Female characters are more or less on an equal playing field with male ones in fighting games. Except perhaps in the square yardage of fabric it takes to put their outfits together. Though I may just have MK on the brain at the moment.

The most American game ever, is coming out in America second. What the fuck.

So now it's June. It would be so easy to let that slip to the holiday season, claiming that the sales potential is better in the holidays. Then, when the holiday season rolls around, they can claim that it's overcrowded, and they're holding it until Spring 2012 so that it's not facing so much competition. Rinse, repeat. Game never comes out. I wouldn't have wanted to be the one that had to tell 2K about needing another month.

Also, fuck Randy Pitchford and the way he's still trying to give Gearbox the credit for finishing this game. Triptych Games are still the studio doing the real work to wrap this one up. And on that note, I'm blaming them for the delay, as well.

One extra observation: the art on that big standee in the background (Duke on the throne) would make a MUCH better boxart for this game, than the shitty one they're using now.
How inept do you have to be to work on this game?
Randy Pitchford. That's all that needs to be said.

Wow this thread has caught on fire!

P.S. Delaying the game yet again, I can't expect this to EVER come out. Forever indeed, they should never have called it that...now for some reason the game is unable to be released.

They also just confirmed that the PC version won't have a map editor or any mod tools.

I swear, they're trying their damnedest to kill my excitement for this game. All they need to do now is confirm that they won't have dedicated servers, and will only be using a strict automatic matchmaking system without even a server browser.

Out of curiosity, has anyone here actually read the full article from the magazine?

http://www.duke4.net/news.php?extend.425

For one whole sentence (made as a passing reference) in his preview people are sure blowing this (capture the babe thing) way out of proportion.

I'm more upset that
jet packs
aren't in the full game....:hot:
(only MP)

DAMNIT!!!!!

I really hope they don't anounce that it won't have dedicated servers. Hell after seeing the dedicated servers of Black Ops I don't even want them to be like that.

Hey, I'm down for CTB......sounds like a good distraction. Anyway, where were all these blow-hards when they initially spoke about releasing it or when the video came out with the girls under the desk? Heck, just go look at Duke 3D...were they really expecting anything different?

Not that I will give them credit with a link since they are on the extreme anyway, but even the Far-right (Fox) News Corp has an article on it now.
