I have a super crappy DVD player and was wondering if anything is known about the PS3's DVD player. Will it upconvert to higher resolutions?

EDIT: Ah, google is there anything you don't know?

from momitsu page

This player will upconvert DVD video to high definition and support resolutions varying from 480p to 1280 SXGA with varying scan rates. Being a full-spec DVD-I machine, this player will easily support high-resolution analog video output at resolutions up to 1080i, via standard component output, or with optional HD-15 VGA adapter. If you don't have a HDTV, the V880-DX will support your current television now, and your future TV or monitor.

The Momitsu DVD-V880-DX will support the following media types: DVD, DVD-R/DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, VCD, CD, CD-R, CD-RW, SVCD, and VCD. It will support MPEG-1, MPEG-3, MPEG-4, MP3, and JPEG file types.

Another thing I was wondering...what does Sony plan on doing about a remote? If one of our motivating factors for buying a PS3 is supposed to be Blu-ray movies, are we going to have to pay extra for a real remote? It sure looks that way.

I will bet they release a remote for in the neighboorhood of $20. I plan to use my Harmony 360 remote for it since it should be able to learn all the commands.

I was thinking the same thing as I have a Harmony remote too, but how can we teach it the commands if we dont have the PS3 remote?
Hopefully Logitech will have it in their database.

Note that you need to have the $599 PS3 to upconvert DVD to hidef, because it is illegal to output upconverted DVD over component (need to have HDMI). PS3 does not support HD DVD (none of the models), only Blu-Ray.

Knowing Sony the remote control will be an extra accessory, and they'll change the basic IR codes so the PS2 remote won't work either.

I'm sure the Harmony/Logitech remote will have the PS3 IR codes on the Website soon after the PS3 is released. If your remote has the USB capability, just hook it up and input the PS3 as a new device, and it should upload the codes you need to the remote.
I'm hoping that I can use my PSP. That would be spiffy.
They said that was the intention back at E3 2005
