Okay, so I sold a bunch of crap on ebay and ended up with $400. For the first time in 10 years I said, "screw Sony" and bought a 360. I was wondering if you guys had any advice for me on how to care for the machine and avoid the red ring of death?

Wiser words have never been said.

congrats on your purchase. Honestly ive just had my machine in one spot and never moved it.. plus the newer models should be a little better then the original wave

Good Choice OP

Make sure you keep it in a well-ventilated area, I also use the Pelican fan stand which blows air in through the bottom. My 360 is nearly a year old and I've had no problems thus far.

I couldn't agree more with your anti-Sony sentiment.

I don't think there's anything you can really do to avoid the ring of death, as it usually just up and happens without warning, whether you did something wrong or not. If it happens, it happens.. unfortunately. As long as your system is under warranty, you should be fine though.

Keep it well ventilated (power brick as well) and make sure it's on a stable surface. I keep mine horizontal on the concern that sitting vertical, it's running a higher risk of scratching my discs.. but this is really just personal preference.

I would have to disagree with everything you've said. Except keep it well ventilated. That is something that every electronic device needs.

I've never had a red ring of death. Also my power brick has laid on carpet for almost a year now without any problems. But my 360 itself is well ventilated.
Don't move it when it is on and do NOT use an Intercooler. Other than that, game on!
I've also had an intercooler on my console since july 06, and its ran like a champ. 4 people have said that its a bad product then it turned into everyone say it made their console tap out. Which I don't believe.

I read somewhere over the weekend that if you get the ring of death, you can temporarily get the system to work again if you wrap it in a towel. I must have read that on either Kotaku or Joystiq.

Keep it in ahorizontal position for better stability, standing it vertical will risk damaging the game if the system is moved.
Elevate the system on a flat surface away from carpeting and confined spaces.
Connect the power supply to a power strip.
Turn it on/off and open/close the tray using the controller.

I am going on my 4th 360 and i never move it, it is well ventilated and I don't play it for hours upon hours. It is just a crapshoot. I don't think there is anything special you can do to avoid a defective product. If you have not already, get a warranty you will probably need it. Even though I am starting to hate my 360 when it does work it is pretty great. I have also had no problems with the customer service yet.

The Intercooler is bad news. If you buy the MS warranty (and you should, unless you bought a store warranty), you won't need to worry about any potential overheating problems. As long as it is well ventilated, it shouldn't overheat in the first place.
You are SO in my sig!
Sweet, I think this is the first time I've ever been sigged! Anyway, thanks for the informative posts. I'm really liking the 360 so far, especially the free game demo downloads and Live in general. Oh, and Gears looks un-freaking-believable in 1080i.
