This thread has been replaced by TSDT v11

Daily Deal:
Please check the Steam homepage.

Weeklong Deals:
Steam usually has week-long deals that change on Mondays at 6PM UTC. They mostly feature indie games, and may not run every week.

Sale summary lists:

Key:
⤷ indicates DLC, — specifies part of a pack, + shows alternative versions, ⚠ highlights things worth knowing, ♫ is obvious, and ... denotes a multi-pack.

Holiday Sale 2013 | 19/12/13 through 3/1/14:
Days 1-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12, 13-14.

Spring/Autumn Sale 2013 | 27/11/13 through 3/12/13:
All days.

Steam deals on other stores: (Related threads on CAG.)

Indie* bundle threads: (*Not always indie, nor always a bundle.)

Free stuff:
There are quite a few free games (mostly Free to Play) and mods available via the Steam platform, a comprehensive list of which can be found in this thread on the SPUF.
(NOTE: free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.)

Seems weird to develop a manufacturing/distribution process just to create and send 300 units, but what do I know.

I'm not that excited about the winter sale. There isn't much I want in the end and I miss the fun games of yore. Snow globes aren't really doing it for me.
wut u got against sno globes?

It looks like IndieGameStand is doing 12 days of 24-hour features for the 12 days of Christmas.  The current offering, Knytt Stories, is DRM free, but I suppose we should keep our eyes on it for day-long Steam offerings.

Finally, figured out what Windows 8.1 upgrade did to Google Chrome. It decided to completely corrupt my user folder. Sneaky M$

Most of the bonuses from the Alan Wake Humble Weekly have been released as free DLC for the game on Steam.
Freaking sweet, glad I passed on this.

It here! My Steam Machine. The wooden box that it came in is awesome but FedEx beat it up in its delivery. First impressions, heavier than I expected but seems solid. Controller could definitely use some work. Feels cheap and playing Super Meat Boy with it doesn't feel as natural as a 360 controller or even mouse & keyboard.

Forgot to check the CPU when I opened it but got a GTX 780.
Congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep, people will be all over this with SAM.

Eh, agree to disagree, then. Just don't tell sunasun Steam has removed bacon from his inventory.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU HUMBLEBUNDLE

I sit in day 2 of orientation in the same room for 8 hours listening to dumb stupidities like "remain professional at work by not cursing" and this is what I come home to?!? We need counseling. It's taking me all the restraint I have to not jump into bed w/that mediocre looking Bundlestars chick who keeps trying to stick her hands down my pants
you do realize that's your left hand, correct?

Going through a massive list like what is over at the Amazon thread and having to check most of the listing against Enhanced Steam in a separate tab is torture. JS, how hard would it be to have ES in a little toolbar app (like the standard google search bar beside the address bar) or something where it monitors your clipboard contents. That way you could just select, copy a game title and get a little green bar in that bar, green check mark or something when on any other site. Or it could just cull from the standard steam search (where you type in a game name and the drop down list has the green bars on title matches you own). You could just mirror that functionality. (I say "you could just" like I have any fuck clue what it takes to code such things). Love the app (and I have donated to the cause), but with the way Steam is handling it's sales, I find myself buying more from other sellers (Greenman,Amazon,Bundles, etc.) than from a Steam page with no immediate knowledge of whether that title is currently owned or not.

I need to append my earlier, more critical opinion of SR IV to say that as you get deeper in, there's some great missions with a lot of humor. I still dislike a lot of stuff they added which detracts from the core reason to play the game (platforming, hacking, etc) and some design decisions are getting old real fast (eternal night, flickering simulation images) but if you liked SRTT I'd say it's definitely worth getting -- on sale, once Amazon puts it on Editor's Choice, with the coupon and maybe with the SRTT $5 coupon ;)
They've put themselves in a weird place as a franchise.

Saints Row III was off the wall insane, and the sequel had to follow up on that, and I think they made the sequel that they had to, but I really don't know what they do from here. Not just because SRIV is crazy, but also because it's sort of a retrospective on the franchise through its narrative.

I'm interested to see what the next Saints game looks like.

Not really a deal but I just noticed that the Alpha for DayZ Standalone is available on steam... at a whopping $30. It's only going to get higher as the game progresses from alpha. I'm really tempted to buy it, but that $30 is telling my gut no.

It looks like IndieGameStand is doing 12 days of 24-hour features for the 12 days of Christmas. The current offering, Knytt Stories, is DRM free, but I suppose we should keep our eyes on it for day-long Steam offerings.
IGS will be offering games that are normally free to download for a donation to charity. From the IGS announcement:

"This holiday season, IndieGameStand is spotlighting the best free indie games and raising money for charity. Our 12 Days of Christmas Charity event will run from December 18th-29th. Each day we will reveal and spotlight a new indie game that is freely available on the internet. By donating, you will unlock these great games in your IGS wallet and all proceeds will be donated to Child's Play. Check back every day to discover new indie games and contribute to our charity drive this holiday season."

Knytt Stories is available to download from Nifflas' site - well worth it, I might add, like most of his games.

Seems weird to develop a manufacturing/distribution process just to create and send 300 units, but what do I know.
Having worked for a computer OEM, in a shop that looked remarkably like the one in the pics Valve posted, a single run of 300 units was definitely not out of the ordinary. And a good OEM would have a turnkey process, thus they would handle it from engineering to delivery.

This is somewhat random, but has anyone had success with copying and pasting games into their SteamApps folder so that they don't have to re-download them when moving to a new computer?  I recently wiped my hard drive and installed Windows 8.1, so I'm going through the process of re-installing all of my games.  I saved most of my Steam games to an external hard drive, but I can't find a way to install them without re-downloading all the files.  I've tried most of the things suggested on the Steam forums, including copy-and-pasting the game into the SteamApps folder before starting to install the game, starting a download and then copy-and-pasting the game into the SteamApps folder (with and without restarting Steam), copy-and-pasting the game into the downloads folder, and so on.

Any ideas?  I'm on a slow internet connection and would like to avoid re-downloading gigs upon gigs of files...

I've done that multiple times. All of those things I've done and they've worked for me. Are you sure they're re-downloading and not just validating?

Yup; I've been testing it with smaller (i.e. sub-1GB) games, and they've all re-downloaded, not just validated. I can't figure out why it won't detect the copy-and-pasted files and just validate them.

(And honestly, I've enjoyed my Windows 8 experience so far. It's snappier than Windows 7 on the same computer, and a start menu replacement program solved any issues I had regarding that poor decision by Microsoft.)

Weird... (because I've done the start-to-download, swap in the full file set, validate, many times.)

Don't get me started on winh8... imagine a battalion of Moobys.

I've been kinda convinced to stick with Win 7 even tho I got a 8.1 key. I read some people saying it's not that bad, and then some saying it's unbearable... one thing is clear, it's not designed for desktops. I'll save myself the headaches.

I swear you people… I'll never buy stuff for my computer. I had just convinced myself to go with Windows 8...

I honestly have no idea what Deuterium7's going on about. My personal expectations for the Steam sale are low because there just really isn't much I want (that I don't own) atm. Heck, the only DLC on my wishlist is that I expect a sale on is Dawnguard, the SR4 Season Pass, and Giana's Rise of the Owlverlord. The Native American Subjugation Day sales netted me FC3, SR4, and NF$:MW which was the larger part of my wishlist. The remainder is an assortment of smaller games that's I'll pick up one they hit 75%, e.g. Van Helsing, Guacamelee, Syder Arcade, etc.

Then again, I was apathetic to coal and the summer sale achievement gimmick before that.

it's not designed for desktops.
This! (And computability issues with CAD software.)

Heh. Just ignore my ramblings any time in the AM. I should learn to refrain from such odd posts. Tempted to just delete the nonsense...

EDIT: Deleted

Well I don't know if you have a license for 7... if I had no licenses I would probably buy 8 over 7... don't like the idea of investing money in the older software.
I'd be upgrading from XP… 'cuz that's how I roll. OLD SKOOLE!

Re: Steam Sale. We've all seen it before. The more popular Steam gets the less aggressive they are with pricing. Gone are the days of 80% discounts (hell they rarely hit 75% anymore), $5 for 5 indie bundles, mega-packs, etc. There are only maybe half a dozen titles I want that I think will hit the right price points. The rest is just bundle fodder and waiting for another day when stuff gets cheaper and my backlog is smaller.

Someone tell me how to use space key while posting on cag with steamOS. All it does is make my page scroll down. Please and thanks. Oh,and i must be an idiot for trying to play painkiller hell and damnation with steam controller. Couldnt finish the first level ,kept dying.

if you livestream yourself trying out the steambox/controller, i would pay upwards of $5 usd. think about it.

So far I'm really not liking the Steam controller. It's a lot harder to aim with than a standard controller in a FPS. However, the community bindings are really cool. You can upload your own bindings or select from any others that have been uploaded. Great feature if you're too lazy to modify your own bindings.

EDIT: Oh and.. I think my Steam machine has a low IQ, it doesn't know how to tell time. I have it set to Eastern time zone, yet it says it's 4:36 PM (correct time is 8:36 AM at the time of this edit). There aren't any settings to fix it.. it's bizarre.

Here is what I used in my build and have had 0 issues after a year:

Cpu - i5 3570k
Ram - corsair
Mobo - asrock
Psu - seasonic
Gpu - evga 650ti
Os - win 8

I can be more specific if you want, but I'm just pointing out the manufacturers I used without issue.

That's where I'm at. I don't think there's a "major" title I want to own that I don't own already except for a select few that'll still be priced outside my interest level (like AC4). It feels like not a lot of stuff came out in the past six months following the bunch of stuff between last Fall-Spring (Hitman: Ab, TR 2013, Sleeping Dogs, FC3, BSI, Metro: LL, etc). But all of that stuff I either got on sale or from video card offers and played them all. Now I'm mainly just idly waiting around to see how well Watchdogs does Chicago and wondering how badly they'll screw up DA3.

Steam box is from the future. Spoder's not lucky. He's one of John Connors Lt.

Obvious answer for Spoder is to move across the globe to the correct time zone.  God helps those who help themselves.

By which I mean, you'll be able to get that sweet CIS regional pricing once you move.

When the Win 8.1 update hit I did a fresh system install because I'd been living for a few months with some database stuff that ran as a service and would just not uninstall. Not a virus, just something uninstalled in the wrong order that was stubborn. After this new install, when I went to play Steam games that were still on the drive the client kept redownloading them. Eventually, maybe after a day or two, it finally figured out that those games did exist. I don't know if it was due to a reboot or what, but they started working. My recommendation is to wait a couple of days and see if the problem persists.

edit: Actually I was thinking about it some more and it may have been reclaiming the permissions for the Steam folder. Try that. You may want to google specific instructions. It's not something I do often enough to feel like I can adequately detail it well.

Finally, figured out what Windows 8.1 upgrade did to Google Chrome. It decided to completely corrupt my user folder. Sneaky M$
It could be a Chrome thing and just poor timing. I turned on my machine a couple of days ago and found that Chrome had lost my profile completely. I was basically looking at bare, unused Chrome. Fortunately I have browser sync turned on so I was back to normal within a couple of minutes.

I really wish Steam would stop releasing videos with the Steam controller working on an FPS. It's clearly not designed for FPS, and truly shines with RTS games and the like. But now peoples' first impression of the thing are mired by the fact that they're trying it out with shooters.

Honestly, my hope is for some sale on some really old games...  Very few titles really caught my eye this year. Maybe Saints Row IV but they keep releasing more content so I would be happy to hold off on it and get a total package down the road.

I guess Metro Last Light would be my big title.

Really want Transformers and STALKER bundles.

Drink Blood.

Smoke Crack.

Worship Satan.

Go Mac!
That is the Kool-Aid in which I'm unwilling to drink.

Honestly though, I'd don't get why that of all groups, PC gamers complain so much about an OS. Aren't they/we suppose to be technically superior to their console brethren and common (non-gamer) folk alike? I could understand if we were talking about WME where platform stability was an issue, but W8 is so similar to W7 under the hood, I just don't understand (or believe) all the internet trash talk. I get that there is a UI learning curve and the 'OMG change scares me' thing, but damn. I waited to use W8 until it was out for a while (like I do with all OS's) and can't see what all the people who are dead set against it see. If you want to ignore the Metro UI the option is there. If you want your W7 experience back, the option is there. If you want to stay with W7, do that since it's still purchasable and will be supported for the next 6 years.

It isn't? I thought some of the point was that it would behave more like mouse/keyboard than a standard controller.

Not sure what site had the article was but they where demo Metro Last Light with it and was really impressed that the guy doing the preview survived the first fight...

Undoubtedly, the stream controller can be used for FPS but it might not be the most intuitive of setups... Its going to take some practice. So it might not be the best genre to try out first.

The only meaningful content can be had with the Season Pass (Enter the Dominatrix and The Saints Save Christmas), which has been going on sale when the main game does. As far as I know they're otherwise done with story DLC.

It's meant to emulate mouse/keyboard games that you usually wouldn't be able to play from your couch. Things like point-and-click adventures, RPGs with mouse-heavy interfaces, RTS games, etc. Shooters already have a couch alternative in an Xbox 360 controller, a device that Steam is NOT attempting to replace. No controller will ever approach the precision of mouse and keyboard for shooters, and this one is not attempting to.

True on that... but I've been kicking the tires on my complete package of Saints Row The Third and the shotgun that shoots chum over the victim whom then gets devoured by a shark is rather hysterical.

It almost makes it a whole new game...

lol poor spoderman maybe a fun party will make it be good os hehe. mysterd prolly hack th time not sure how but he did hh

Oh, I'm not sure how many people have Shadowrun Returns on their list should likely hold off on buying it this sale...  New DLC comes out in Jan and they will be bundling it with the base game for 24.99 at that time...  The base game will still be for sale at 19.99.

The DLC itself will be 14.99
