Every now and then I briefly debate buying Diablo 2, then I don't and I forget the game exists. I feel like I have an obligation to play one of the games at some point.
I've seen it at thrift stores so many times, and I just always pass it up. I dunno why.

Realistically I guess I wouldn't play it until I got back to Divine Divinity and Titan Quest and finished those completely, but... only God knows if that will ever happen.

I feel like I need to play Diablo 2 since that's routinely touted as the pinnacle of the genre, from what I've read. It's just, I haven't played much of the genre, and from what I have played (Torchilight 2), although it's entertaining, it's not my favorite, either. I feel like if I bought it it'd sit in my backlog forever.

Opinions vary, but at the very least, it defined the genre and still does today. A lot of people who aren't caught up in the nostalgia and air of gaming royalty behind it will say that some other ARPGs, such as Titan Quest, are better, but yeah, D2 is definitely a classic in that category.

Torchlight was amusing, but it never really scratched the APRG itch for me. I got about 75% of the way through the first one and got burned out. At the time I was on my old craptop with integrated graphics, so I didn't really have many choices. I've tried playing TL2, but it just feels like more of the same to me and it didn't hold my attention. No camera rotation bothers me more than it should as well.

In any case, I'd say you should give the genre more of a chance if TL2 wasn't much fun to you.

Yeah, I have Titan Quest...maybe I'll try that out soon. I did enjoy TL2, it just wasn't a standout game to me.

Yeah, same here with TL1. I didn't hate it, I mean, if I hated it I wouldn't have played through most of the game, but it just doesn't strike me as something at the top of its genre.

Be sure to install the unofficial patch 1.17 and the Allskins patch if you get around to playing Titan Quest. Also, install the Immortal Throne expansion as well (if you have it), since it overhauls the UI, fixes things, and adds a new story and whatnot onto the end of the game, as opposed to changing the game or being a standalone thing. Patching it has its odd little quirks, but if you'd modded anything before you should be fine with the guides they come with.

I love the series, I've beat Diablo a number of times (as in with different characters), but I wasn't a huge fan of DII. My biggest problem is I've always gotten distracted by other things but I always felt the need to always make a MP character... and after a certain amount of inactivity your character would get deleted from battle.net. (So I've seen the first act numerous times... Others not so much.)

I'm not sure why it bothered me so much but the changes to weapons/armor that only a certain class could wear or the loss of the excitement one would get when they found a new item that gave even more of a bonus to the magic skill. (In the first game, all characters where pretty much the same minus one ability. You could start as a sorcerer and through items and whatnot turn yourself into a melee fighter... Or start as a fighter and learn some nice magic to make yourself a real badass. etc. The only requirement was that you meet the skill requirement when you equip the item. So a if your strength was 55 with a ring and a shield (both giving bonuses in strength) than you could equip that really awesome piece of torso armor you just found. (and then you could unequip the shield and ring and still wear it.) Even better was saving spell books (So you could increase the spell's level making it cheaper mana wise to cast) and items that improved magic...

Of course this was back when you only kept what was in your backpack, no stash tab etc, so before you left the game you would pick up all the items you dropped in town. Including piles of gold (as they took up space in your backpack) so it could become hell of a fight to get everything "saved" and really thrilling when you hit a new magic ability plateau and cleared out all those spell books you had been carrying.

Anyhow, now days you don't think twice about gear for specific classes (and I don't even think twice about it either) and you just don't see magic systems like that either... Which is likely for the better now. :)

Honestly, loved the original... I've even played it within the last year but I'm not sure its a game I could recommend. (The original and DII are sprite based with lower resolutions only... The first is super rough on the eyes now.)

DIII, really loving it. I suspect I'll finish the expansion today/this weekend and its been a really solid addition. The town area at the start of Act V really feels alive, in spite of all the undead and death, due to the abundance of side areas within it. (Just like you feel a real city would provide.) Sadly, the story is just baseline... Which I cannot really complain about as I was really impressed with the story in base game. It was far better than I thought it would be. Anyhow, the character design for the main bad guy is just so awesome... but its like Darth Maul. Just not enough worthwhile screen time.

Torchlight and TLII, I own them. I've just never played them so Its sort of hard to tell you which would be better... I know TLII at one point in time was viewed as a better Diablo than Diablo III was.

True Confessions:

I have never played a Diablo game.
I admit I'm not a huge fan of Diablo-style ARPGs, but I kind of feel like if you missed the boat it might be a bit late to try to jump on the bandwagon now. For me that ship had kind of already sailed by DII, and after trying the demos for TL and DIII I think I no longer have the patience for the genre. The first Diablo was really something special in its time. As far as I know there had never been another game like it, genre-wise, and back in high school I found the atmosphere incredibly immersive, with then top-of-the-line graphics and art design, and excellent, moody music. The horror angle with its religious undertones was a new take on fantasy too, and I got sucked in by the whole world.

When Diablo II came out I was super excited, but that excitement quickly turned into "meh"-ness. The new environments didn't feel very Diablo-y to me; transplanting the whole thing to the desert or the rain forest somehow just felt wrong. I couldn't get lost in these new worlds, and without that sense of immersion the gameplay started to feel very clicky-clicky and grindy. Plus the game being like four times longer than the original, which I had felt was paced perfectly, didn't help. I beat it once but I didn't terribly enjoy it, and as a result I never tried the expansion or multiplayer. Since then I've pretty much had no interest in the genre. But that's just me and my obviously minority opinion.

Our tastes in games are so similar it's starting to get a bit spooky.

I think I own a couple of these (Not looking in the libary, just going from memory) but, I don't know... It doesn't look like a horrible bundle at the current price. Anything more and I would skip it for sure.

What's everyone's thoughts on HH happening on this bundle?
Didn't happen on the last one, so I wouldn't plan on it.

I don't think a HH happened on the last one, but if you buy bulk gift copies now it's slightly cheaper or something (not by much).

Not a very appealing bundle. The only games I don't have (I don't think they've been bundled before) are Dark Shadows and Lyne. Cardinal Quest hasn't been in a bundle for awhile... but it's nothing to be all that excited about. Really basic, repetitive little roguelike along the lines of Dungeons of Dredmor, except infinitely less complex.

I just want to say Lyne is a good puzzle game, you can unlock a daily mode where the puzzles are randomly generated for different days of the week. if you want a simple casual game to kill time, it is highly recommended.

I had meant to say something about the environments but forgot, and almost edited my post to include it, but, yes... The environments bothered/didn't agree with me too. Diablo always feels better when in a dungeon. This holds true even in Diablo III but less so... The whole environments always seem dark/forbidden than their DII counterpart.

Good point, I had completely forgotten about how D2 starts, in the rainy fields of blandness. Ugh. That first act went on forEVER.

I played some Diablo II a while ago. It hasn't held up well, in my opinion. The gameplay and feel is solid but other entries in the genre (Torchlight springs to mind) have just made advances that I can't see past with D2. For example, I'm a compulsive area-clearer. After clicking 72 barrels to destroy them, I don't want to have to click up a further 73 times to pick up all those silly little gold coins. It's similar to the original XCOM games in that respect, time has caught up with them all and it's just not a fun gaming experience. For me, at least. Hardcore D2 fans may disagree.

My word, I just watched the gameplay video for Dark Shadows and... yeah, I think I'm gonna pass on a Gala for the first time in awhile.

True Confessions:

I have never played a Diablo game.

Also: I finished Dark Souls 2 last night. It's definitely really good, and they didn't tone down the difficulty as some were worried about when they talked about making it "more accessible." There were a few changes I really didn't like, but not enough to ruin the game for me, by any means. I briefly played a few minutes in NG+, and a really cool thing it looks like they did was that it's not just harder now, new enemies are added, so it really contributes to a new experience. Also - Bruticis was worried about the torch mechanic and how the changed lighting affects it. I played the game as dark as the in game settings allowed for. Obviously, the vast majority of the game didn't require a torch, but there were a few levels where if you didn't have one it was nearly pitch black, so the mechanic did come into play there.
I've never played it, but I don't like aRPGs too much. At least not the ones where you have to click a billion times. A drunk friend tried to show me Diablo 2 once because he thought I would love it and it was just kind of boring and creepy to sit in a dorm room watching a dude down a bottle of Brandy and play Diablo.

The Monday bundles are new, but the first one last week didn't have HH so it probably won't.

Don't count on HH, but the introductory price on these is roughly equivalent to an HH price for a group buy.

If I didn't own Iasebel, Sparkle 2 Evo, and Cardinal Quest, this would be a good bundle for ~$2. As it is, not really worth it just for Dark Shadows and Lyne. Dark Shadows: Army of Evil is a ridiculously derivative name and the gameplay doesn't look too great either.

Now you've got me interested...
LYNE could appear in a future Humble PC and Android bundle so if you have most of the games from the current Indie Gala bundle, you may want to hold on to your money first.

I would prefer to have the mobile version given the choice because this is the type of game which does not need any commitment and good to play while you are on the move. The initial puzzles are very easy but it gets more challenging later. The best thing about the game is that there are no time limit so you can really take your own time to figure out the solution.

Hmmm, I might wait then. Weird enough it's $2.60 on Amazon App store. Was hoping for the usual .99 cent app pricing.

so i've been playing RoS for the past week now, and must say I've having a pretty good time with it. with the auction house gone, people have been complaining that the new loot system is too streamlined and dumbed-down. and while i kind of agree, i still get a feeling of satisfaction upgrading my equipment, maybe because I'm a sheep, I don't know. anyways, if anyone wants to do Adventure mode with me, hit me up whenever I'm on.

I passed on the bundle and even though Spoder said it sucked, I don't think I'll be able to pass on it this time. Thanks!
I think its worth a dollar, just don't expect much out of the zombie gimmick. Also, people have been selling Clutch for 75 cents in the trade thread (not sure if they still are).

Isn't there new Sleeping Dogs coming. Althought it isn't Sleeping Dogs in name, but still similar game set in same universe? (Triad Wars)
Yeah, I know it was announced, but not sure how far along it is/was. I'm not sure how well SD sold or how much money it made them. I thought it was their best game in a while, but I don't think it really hit the popularity levels they hoped (GTA).

Nothing sales as much as they hope/expect it to sale... Remember the recent Tomb Raider?

As for SD sales, if I remmber they where solid/good but see above... Also they bought the IP from Activision when the game was father along than normal. I imagine they made a profit on it.

Well, I figured if they'd pay me to buy it I'd go a head & grab it - but they took the buy button down. Oh well. (I know that's normal - I still always feel compelled to check since I'm nuts).

I don't think it is a glitch. New permanent price drop.

EDIT: Oh I see the glitch. It is supposed to be permanent, but it is in the weekly deals section.

I'm going to work, then back to the shallowness of FC3. Someone notify me when the Steam/Amazon threads are back to their normal OT behavior.

Someone talk about multiple DRM layers, the quality of wood paneling for basement use or Lost Planet while I'm gone.
Amazon thread has been fine for the last few pages, we're talking about The League now.

So I take it that deal for Day of Defeat for $1 with all the other games is no longer active?

Stupid real life not allowing me to look at this thread yesterday afternoon.
Yeah, it's been gone for hours. Missed out, really fucking hate having my address banned from GameFly.

Torchlight was amusing, but it never really scratched the APRG itch for me. I got about 75% of the way through the first one and got burned out. Yeah, I didn't really like TL1 all that much (keep in mind I played on 360). When I beat the main story of the game and the bonus dungeon (with the same amount of floors as the main dungeon) unlocked, I got in like 5 floors of the new dungeon before I just got sick of the game. I'm still missing the Fame achievement because of it, so I eventually have to go back. Eventually.

I hear TL2 is better, but I'm not touching it until I see a substantial enough sale.

Re: Current Steam sales. That's odd that Sang-Froid is on sale considering the Groupees bundle. Also, I hear really good things about Scratches as a survival horror, I'm still sad I missed out on whatever bundle it and Anna were in. Anyone have any impressions on the game? It's part of a bundle with 4 other games I don't own (that's been as low as $10 on Steam), should I just wait for that?

It's come to my attention that there are people out there who haven't played, or even heard of, Supercars 2.

What is wrong with you people?

Oh, in terms of the Squeenix thing Fox linked to, don't worry Hitman fans, the devs behind Hitman have talked about the next Hitman game they're currently working on (doubtful Squeenix will can it at this point), and it sounds much better than Absolution. Here's a link -> http://www.lazygamer.net/general-news/the-next-hitman-is-an-open-world-stealthy-sandbox/

The new Sleeping Dogs game, Triad Wars, is also confirmed to be in development for 360, PS3, Xbone, PC, PS4. I doubt they'll can it either. No worries folks.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleeping_Dogs:_Triad_Wars

There's some screens of it available as well.

As for the new Tomb Raider, could go either way, haven't heard much about it.

This is literally all the info on Wiki about it ->

At San Diego Comic-Con 2013, it was announced that comic writer Gail Simone would be continuing the reboot's story in a line of comics published by Dark Horse Comics, and that the story of the comic would lead directly into a sequel.[141] Later, at the beginning of August, Square Enix's Western CEO Phil Rogers confirmed that a sequel to Tomb Raider was being developed for unspecified next-gen consoles.[142] In an interview later that year, Brian Horton, the senior art director for Crystal Dynamics, said that the sequel would tell "the next chapter of [Lara's] development... her life is changing. She can't go back to the way she was."[143]

It's come to my attention that there are people out there who haven't played, or even heard of, Supercars 2.

What is wrong with you people?
Never heard of it. Note the lack of Comic Sans.
