It's like Mass Effect... without all the blabby bits, or being in space... and with a lot more action and loot.
Ick @ comparing ME series to Diablo series.

You're just trying to get him to buy Diablo! :p

If anything, D3 plays more like a click-and-point ARPG - like say Torchlight 2, Diablo 2, and Titan Quest.

Those are addictive loot-fests w/ lots of enemy-slaughtering; loot-upgrading; skill-gaining; and a story that is not worth caring too much about.

If that sounds good to you - highly recommend D3; and ANY of those ARPG's that I mentioned along w/ it.

Especially D2 + LOD.

Mass Effect games actually make the player care about the story, game-world, its inhabitants, and the actual journey itself (which can be much different from other players - in which that is unlike the final ending to the ME3 base-game, in most instances).

she pretty much hit the nail on the head though

I played ME1... the lizard guy was funny.  The dinosaur guy was funny.  Other than that I couldn't care less about the other characters.  Game was so boring/on-rails/popamole cover shooter I never bothered with the sequels.  A bunch of narrow corridor third-person shooter vignettes stringing together exposition dumps.

I remember enjoying Diablo II, so I recently gave Torchlight 1 a try...looks good, sounds good, but kinda boring... Not as bad as Titan Quest which I found really boring. Maybe I lost that loving feeling with ARPGs?

With the glut of them it's not hard to do. For what it's worth Torclight 1 was made in under eight months or so and is more a proof-of-concept. Torchlight 2 is the fully fleshed out rival to the other games and there a ton of mods that add a lot of good user-created content to boot. To put it another way, Torchlight 1 is closer to Fate whereas Torchlight 2 is closer to the Diablo series.

Haven't played any of those, yet. But I've always loved the look of Diablo and love loot grinding in Borderlands, so I think it's time to get my feet wet

Two people requested it actually.

Torchlight 2 is MUCH better than Torchlight 1.

I think if you've played tons of ARPG's or played Diablo 2 obsessively - you might have ARPG burn-out.

ARPG haven't really evolved super-duper much over the years. Many still copy the D2 formula w/ barely any new twists, takes, innovations on it in the gameplay department; most just don't have fantastic stories + fantastic characters...

If you love that loot-grinding + constant action aspect of Borderlands, I think you'll love what Diablo series has going on in that regard.

And some of the other ARPG's that I mentioned, as well - Torchlight 2; Sacred 2: Gold; Diablo 2 + Lord of Destruction; Titan Quest: Gold.

Thing is - Borderlands controls like a shooter (WSAD for movement and plays like a FPS) w/ those ARPG underpinings (loot-crazy and kill-crazy), while Diablo controls like old-school ARPG's (just point-and-click to do...everything).

If you're fine w/ constant point-and-clicking for movement (of your characters) and slamming hotkeys to fire off different skills, items, whatever - you'll like the combat. Especially since the sound effects always sounded damn good in Diablo games, as well. Nobody really does this stuff like Diablo, TBH. It's...addictive.

EDIT:

Thanks for the feedback...It sounds like you liked Torchlight 2, so my question is: what did you do with the real Mooby?
/LIKE.

^_^ Yep. Remember that muddy fog that used to be used to hide short draw distances?

The bigger problem is that DoF arises from limitations in optics. It can be used well creatively by photographers and cinematographers to direct the viewer's eye. However when in general use in a game engine the net result is negative because (1) there is no creative vision guiding it's use and (2) while I'm running around I'm used to seeing though my own eyes without massive blurring.

Don't forget to buy the Cataract DLC so you too can enjoy the visual awesomeness that is motion blur

I'm playing ME1 for the first time right now, and to be fair, his description isn't really inaccurate--just overly negativistic, and that's pretty much par for the course with Mooby.

You can thank me later for the nightmares you have of this keyboardist seizing your children and grinning maniacally as she consumes their kidneys.

I like good games. The truth is there aren't many good games.

I'm a delightful mammal with exquisite taste. Tell me what about my description of Mass Effect was inaccurate. Other than planet 'exploration' (which is just tooling around a big open space shooting the same structures again and again) everything in the game is a series of generic corridors. I don't want to call it an adventure game because there are no puzzles... so I guess it's a lot like what Telltale puts out: interactive comics. The story was hilariously sappy and over-the-top. It had a few good characters and some laughs but I question the sanity of anyone who thinks it's some landmark achievement in gaming.

600 hours in DOTA?  That can't be right.  Maybe I left that running in the background, too.  Dungeon Defenders is the only thing I'm moderately ashamed of... but that's sort of like a Diablo game.

Probably a lot of idling/afk/overnight like TF2.  You realize there are people who have 3,000+ hours in DOTA.  Scary stuff.

3rd-party DRM: TAGES™
3 machine activation limit
Actually, if you want to believe some of the recent posts an update this month seems to have removed Tages from Anno 1404/Dawn of Discovery
Some quick digging around on SPUF would have you believe this is true. There's a link to someone who tested out a pre-patch version to say that the TAGES exe and dat files are there, but do not request a key, nor call out at any time.

Damn, that Giana Sisters Owlverlord game has a big ass advertisement for another game on the launcher screen. That ain't cool man. This isn't iOS.

Wouldn't it be cool if from the Steam market screen you could just alter/edit the price at which you're listing an item? Instead of unlist it, go back to your inventory, and relist it?

A new Kickstarter just started. They are offering 1000 people keys for a $1 CAD pledge. They promise a steam key if the game ever gets on it. Scheduled for a FEB 2015 release. Looks like it needs a lot of work but for a buck why not.

"Lanistawars was an MMO browser game which took three years to develop. After the development period which started in 2010 and lasted for two years ..."

...Okay.

"... After completing alpha and beta tests successfully, Lanistawars started to be played in the local markets. The game had been played for one and a half years."

These guys aren't inspiring much faith here. Not only do they make no sense, they spent three years making a browser game, launched it, and then proceeded to scrap it a mere one and a half years later (I can't find anywhere you can play it anymore, and the lanistawars.com site just ties into their new Kickstarter), and now they want to make a new version and are asking for money to do so?

This new project looks a hell of a lot more ambitious. It took them three years to make the last one, so how long is it going to take to make this one? A single player mode is mentioned on their website, but I don't see anything about single player on the Kickstarter, only co-op stuff.

Honestly, a buck isn't much, but I can buy a bundle with a handful of games that actually exist right now. This does not sound like something that's worth putting any money into.

Right in the title it says Single/Co-Op Survival RPG. I think its ambitious of them as well and at least they tell you right on the page where the games origins come from, they aren't trying to hide anything. Who knows why they ditched the browser game maybe they want to do more than a browser game would allow.

Anyway I thought it was a decent deal to get in on a kickstarter. Most of them ask for 10-20 for a copy for a game that will come out 1-2 years later, which is why I rarely ever back them. Just a buck, and lately the bundles have been pretty terrible.

So, with all the Diablo 3 talk (even though this is a Steam thread), I thought it important to note that as of the latest patch, you no longer need the common white weapons/armor (Ascendant stuff) to craft anymore. So, you can go back to having your goblins collect those now, since that's all they are good for, especially since the goblins are buffed now. This should free up a massive amount of inventory space for people who were hoarding the white stuff for crafting. i was using extra characters just for their inventory space specifically for white items.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Highlights from the patch notes:

- Legendary crafted recipes no longer require specific Common armors or weapons and instead now require Common crafting materials.

- Greatly increased the drop rate of Legendary crafting plans.

- Puzzle Ring

The goblins have been scouring Sanctuary for better loot to drop:
        Legendary drop chance doubled
Rare items dropped will now always have six affixes
The counter for picking up normal-quality items will now persist through death, act transitions, and un-equipping the item
It still will not persist across game sessions
The goblin will now play a sound when its counter reaches max and it drops an item

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also, there is a community buff going on for the anniversary giving twice as many Rift keystones and  the chance to find Legendary items is increased 100% (until the 22nd)
