And in this case, comparing modern games (with modern displays) to an NES game (running on an old ass CRT) is disingenuous, but I'm sure you realize that. Those games often ran incredibly smooth so it's not even helping your argument. And I did not attack you.

I may or may not have agreed with you then, I don't care/remember. but they are janky as hell from the bit I've played. I'm sure it's on purpose just like resident evil tank controls stayed intact in the series for so long because having shitty controls creates tension.

I always felt like that was a cop out by the devs though. "Yeah, we did that on purpose because it um...makes the game um...more tense!" You can create tension without having horrible controls. The only thing you're creating with horrible controls is frustration.

Like in AC4, when I free run toward a wall and every now and then I'll just bounce off it instead of actually running up it. I'm not tense because there's a guard hot on my tail, I'm tense because the game should DO WHAT I fuckING TELL IT TO!

 
I should probably buy Second Son from Best Buy for my new PS4, but I'm almost done with InFamous 2 and not really dying to start up with the next one right away.  I'm sure I'd get burnt out while playing through Second Son.

Seeing you play Infamous recently inspired me to download the second one finally. I think I'm going to power through the first one again to finish the remaining trophies...which would make it my longest plat to date. And then I'll play the second one. This is all after I finish AC4 though.

Oh, and then I'm supposed to be finishing my disc based games so I can sell them but...yeah.

He might not have said it's the only thing that matters, but the way he constantly posts about them as if a difference in resolution/framerate means one version of a game isn't worth playing because of it sure seems to imply he feels that way. Anyway I don't mean to argue, but his comments are definitely where these jokes are spawning from.

I was about to make a comment about how I'm not Stotch and was once again getting confused as someone else, but I wasn't sure if your professor comment was a Layton reference.

I generally prefer a focus on graphics at a locked 30fps over less bells and whistles at 60fps, unless the genre really needs super precision like a schmup.

That said, I don't play fighting games, one of the biggest genres where I can see 60fps really making a difference.

I do, however, play arcade racers at 30fps all the time, and am perfectly happy with responsiveness, etc.

As others have stated, we'll never have locked 60fps as a standard in our lifetimes because devs will always have to make the decision between framerate and more stuff going on graphically (more enemies, better image quality, better environments, etc) and fps rarely wins that battle.

I'm starting to think I'm some kind of a mercenary. I find myself on different sides of this so-called war everyday. I don't know if it's because I was fortunate enough to grow up with most of the consoles, or if I've just been afraid to allow myself a favorite. Or maybe I'm subconsciously trying to mask that I have one. I really want to believe I like each platform/company equally. Even the ones I don't own. Thing is, rather than just abstain as a show of neutrality, I go to bat for each as if it were the last device on earth. It really set in a few hours ago when I began arguing against the very things I was previously arguing a few days ago, lol. If that makes sense. It's not that I changed my mind on this particular matter. I just felt it was my duty to defend this console...because someone had to? And I do this shit with Sony, Nintendo, Xbox...doesn't matter. It's like I'm trying to restore balance to the universe. It's exhausting ...and quite lonely. I think I'm about to just join one of these tribes soon. Be at peace with at all.

I did think we would have 60 fps/1080p on everything on the PS4.  

I imagine that I can tell the difference but I know I can't at all.

If they said they they could go to 61 fps, I would demand that because I don't know any better.

And to think, at one point I was amazed with the superior graphics on Activision's and Imagic's games.

Huh? I said 'as a standard'. Obviously any specific game can go to 60fps.

But devs will always need to make the decision between fps and better visuals/enviroments/more enemies. Always. Even on the PS5. Maybe in a couple decades we can have the discussion between 60fps and 120 fps... but there's always a decision to be made between bells and whistles and performance.

And people always have things up their asses. Especially if it's a bullet point they think is something they do better. Doesn't change the fact that as long as a game has a locked fps, I'm happy with 30 in most game genres.

Ok, but here's the problem I have. The characters have been shooting these guns for what...20 years? That's how long the stuff has been going on when we pick up the story. If I have 20 years to practice something, I better be pretty good at it, not fumbling my way through reloading like every time I do it, it's the first time.

Change the settings to turn one ball to 30fps, and the other to 60. Turn motion blurring on or off, and compare. With motion blurring off, the ball at the top looks like it's moving slightly behind the ball on the bottom. As you'll see, when you're closer in fps, you can barely tell the difference. But I guess it's enough for some people to latch onto it.

Most people don't.

Screen tearing looks terrible though. It's when part of the screen doesn't get properly updated. Happens all time in games, but most gamers ignore it too. Google image it and you'll recognize it right away.

Because we can have all the bells and whistles AND have it running at a higher resolution/frame rate than consoles ever will.

I'm not saying it doesn't matter, but if I had to choose one over the other I'm fine with having my games downscaled and capped at 30fps if it means everything else will look that much better for it.

My methods in doing so are what I question. Clearly people are entrenched in their ways so why do I continue to engage them? So, in that sense, it does feel "obnoxious" when I'm fully aware it's an exercise in futility. I guess it was a mistake to couch that post in a little bit of humor since a you seem incapable of understanding.

Guess I'm most people. For the most part I can't tell the difference between 30 and 60 fps. But yeah, screen tearing is super easy to spot once you know what it means. It's obnoxious when it happens all the time but for the most part it's easy to shrug off. And when I'm in the middle of playing a game I rarely notice screen tearing, pop-in, etc unless they're egregiously bad. I'm usually too into the game.

The problem is that while 30 fps might "look" good enough, it can be worlds apart in terms of how it feels. That's why these discussions are so difficult. But there is a very discernible difference especially with certain genres. Probably two of the best examples are Driver: San Francisco and Killzone: Shadowfall. Each of their SP & MP Modes run at different framerates and it's like night and day. That isn't to say they're unplayable when locked at 30, but it's a hell of a lot more responsive when not.

I don't obsess over it but I do wish more developers would stop giving into what simply yields the best screenshots. I know people don't want to hear it but that's one thing you have to give developers like Nintendo and Platinum credit for. Hell, I'd even attribute it to part of CoD's success. It isn't just some superficial thing.

I agree with this, though for the most part it only bothers me for genres that tend to default to 60fps (like shmups, fighting games, and racing games), so it's not an issue for me generally speaking.

I know people don't like to hear it, but really if framerate is a key concern for you PC is the best option, because then you're able to choose for yourself if you prefer graphical quality over resolution/framerate and aren't at the mercy of the developers catering to whichever you prefer.
