It's an enjoyable game. You don't need any of the dlc. I'm playing on hard, and have many hours into the game... you just don't need them.

Here's a basic rundown --

Rainbow Coins -- the basic currency. You'll earn enough in game to buy everything you need, etc. It's actually pretty balanced on hard - healing cost money, etc, and so sometimes you're scrimping if you just splurged and bought some expensive gear but you never feel broke. By end game you'll probably be rolling.

Pearls -- When you level up, your stat 'cap' goes up... but not your actual stats. So, for example, you can now raise STR to 26 instead of 24. But in order to do that, you spend pearls, deciding which stats you want to raise. You get pearls from combat. I pretty much always have enough pearls to raise the stats important to each class, ignoring stats (INT for a fighter, etc) as appropriate. I wouldn't have enough to max a character every time i level, but that's by design and i never feel the need to. MP and HP go up naturally quick enough that you don't need to put any pearls into extra-points for those.

So, basically, even on hard you can beat the game w/o any dlc - it never feels unfair, nor built to force you to buy stuff. However, if you want to have OP characters that always have absolutely max stats, the pearls would be helpful. Also, if you want to never, ever even think about money again, the rainbow coins would be nice.

Other than that, there are some nice rings (black = 2 X xp, for example) and some amulets with tons of crafting slots (99, i think). So again, perfect for making OP characters, but definitely not necessary. I believe all this stuff is available in game anyway - by the time you need a ring to put 99 materials into for hard post-game bosses, you can just buy one in game with in-game earned RC.

Now, where the pearl packs might be helpful is for support characters. Kills get more pearls, so sometimes it's hard to pay for stat raises for a buffer/healer character (though still, they should get 'enough' on their own... just not as much as other chars)... a pearl pack for those characters might alleviate the need to try to weaken enemies and then have your healer get the kill. So an argument could easily be made that those are worth it since it saves you from ever even thinking about kill juggling.

IIRC there are trophies related to maxing a char and your bank account... so in theory the RC pack and the 2 X Xp rings sound useful... but from everything I've read by the time you have all the other trophies you wouldn't need the dlc boost anyway.

Now, i already own the game and have established characters. I'm probably going to buy some of the sale pearl packs just so i never need to worry about kill juggling... but honestly, I never felt like i needed them before this sale.

TLDR -- despite the metric shit ton of dlc, the game is actually balanced to win without it. It's not needed.

I thought Pixeljunk Shooter Ultimate was only for PS4 so that's an early bonus I wasn't expecting. (since I  can play it on Vita now and not wait until I have a PS4)

I'm about 5 hours in on PS3. I'm going to rebuy for Vita. It's very much about the gameplay--characters and story are basically window-dressing. Very fun, easy to pick up, and simple sRPG. I definitely recommend it for the price.

What is with the in-game purchases also on sale? Do I need all that to play? I would buy the game but I'm not about to feed the micro-transaction monster and if the game NEEDS those I'd rather skip it. What do you think? Otherwise it looks like my kind of game (what isn't?).

Also, I'm an outsider looking in but Ni No Kuni for $5 sounds like a pretty great deal. Is that right or is it destined for PS+?

 
Just do yourself a favor and buy a year of PS+ so you don't have to worry about it. You're going to need to re-up anyways just to play through Sly unless you were planning to power game through it.

The micro transactions are crap, don't bother. It plays just fine without them and the game doesn't try to get you to buy them, either.

 
$15 for the ME Trilogy's an alright price, I guess. Though, I agree with those who think ME Trilogy's coming to Xbone and PS4 (there was a retailer leak implying as much), would be too much easy money for them to sit on.

I got it for $5 for PC though, so I guess I might be a little biased.

I have Mario Kart 8 and I'm having a hard time getting what the hype is about. The game cheats like crazy, I swear I only get a coin green shell or bananas out of the question mark boxes. It's not fun like past versions where when someone hit one of your traps your character reacted. I don't know I'll give it more play, but I'm disappointed to this point.

No problem. As I've mentioned in other posts, the plot is pretty paper thin and goofy, so if that bothers you it may be an issue. It doesn't feel jrpg dumb (talking cats and blushing if a girl looks at you) but more like american teenage dumb ("please go fetch my comic book collection" is an actual side mission).

However, beyond that plot is a pretty interesting combat system. It's got lots of battles (random too, but you can skip those at will) but each fight is set up srpg style. For example, different spells have different attack patterns like in, say, disgaea (ie, a cone, or a cross pattern 3 squares away from you). Characters level like normal, skills also level with use, and you find lots of new skills as you go through the game.

The game allows for grinding but if you stick to the plot it's not overly necessary.

Worth taking a shot at this price, imo. You may hate it, but at least you won't go broke doing so. I find it a nice time killer, play it for awhile, then play a different game, then go back to it, etc.

Yeah I just saw on GAF that the first Tuesday thing starts in July. Maybe they plan to drop a couple other freebies for E3 and that's why they didn't start it this month, who knows. But anyway I'm sorry I didn't read all 339 pages of this thread to find the answer rather than just asking.

I believe if you're in the lead you'll get bananas. So play on a harder difficulty? Pick up crates when not in the lead too? Play online? Had a ton of fun playing with my kids tonight and we all got a variety of items.
