Welcome to the Steam deals thread V12, where we talk about just about everything except what games are on sale.
Please wipe your feet on the way in...

Summer Sale PSA: If you're new to Steam sales, be sure to check out both Enhanced Steam and Spoony's Official Guide to Steam Sales before you ask a question and/or spend more money than you'd care to say.

Before you ask, if a game is already a featured deal (daily/flash/community) that's the lowest it will go this sale. Feel free to buy without the worry it will get a better discount later on.

I started building my living room PC last night (hereafter referred to as the FlowBox until I think of a wittier name) and it'll run SteamOS once I get things up and running.
Flowbox sounds like something I picture a woman on a swing talking to her daughter regarding not feeling so fresh about.

It wasn't until last night that I noticed how few fancy titles are on Linux at present. All stuff from my current library (Mark of the Ninja, Guacamelee, Bastion etc.) is hardly gonna convince Mrs Flow that this was a worthwhile investment.
Exactly why my living room gaming system wont use SteamOS, or at best, dual boot it. Of the ~500 games with controller support, only 125 are available on linux, 95% of which are indie games. So props to the indie devs for supporting linux, but it is really a kick in the nads for SteamOS right now that most publishers have made zero effort on the linux front.

There's an interesting idea. SteamOS exclusive for a few months. Launch it in conjunction with the OS. Or even release a free DLC that's SteamOS only temporarily and release the main game for everybody to cut down on the whining.
Too lazy to go cite hunting but supposedly Gabe nixed any suggestion that they would do a Linux exclusive, much less HL3.

I'm not certain what Valve's strategy is for monetizing SteamOS (since it's supposed to be free and you could always just use one of the other free Linux variants) but I'd think they need to get that nailed down before worrying about shoving it down our throats with exclusive games.

Would be nice to be one of the 30 people chosen today for red team but I doubt it. I have arma 3, company of heroes 2, and civ v as my top 3.

I'm willing to give it time. If it turns out to be a hopeless mess or a barren wasteland, I'll stick Win 7 on it and be happy with my lot.

That said, I doubt Valve will sit still on this, they'll be pushing for Linux versions of bigger titles. It's only natural that larger projects will take longer to be converted*.

I'm not certain what Valve's strategy is for monetizing SteamOS . . .
There isn't one really. It is just to continue to be able to sell Steam games if MS makes changes to Windows such that they some how get locked out.

edit: Gaben is quoted as basically saying he is playing the long game with SteamOS, as an alternative and a backup to Windows. Plus, you know, he hates MS, so anything to stick it to them.

Setup Steam Streaming if you can. I did it last night and was amazed. Over wireless I had average results, but with both computers hooked up with network cables I wouldn't have been able to tell you if it was over HDMI or over the network. I hooked up my 360 controller and played Super Meat Boy, Bioshock, Darksiders, and a few other games. They all worked flawlessly. The only game I had problems with was Age of Empires 3, it seemed to not be able to recognize where my mouse was.

The problem with the way studios think about piracy is simply this:  pirates weren't going to buy it anyway.

Every time I hear things like "they WOULD" have made this much more if piracy didn't exist, I just roll my eyes.  Many people pirate because they can't afford to buy something or it isn't available in their region.  Sure there are those that just do it because they can - but honestly, either way, if the ability to pirate the game/movie wasn't there - they still wouldn't have made that sale.

I had an acquaintance a few years back and she would copy EVERY SINGLE DVD she rented from netflix/blockbuster.  It would come in the mail, she would copy it, print out a dvd insert, put it on her bookshelves and mail the DVD back the same day.  Most times she wouldn't even watch it for months at a time.  If she couldn't do this would she have bought all those movies?  No.  Would she have bought some  of those movies?    I really can't say with certainty.  I did ask her how many movies she had bought before she started doing this and she said something along the lines of "I have about 15 VHS tapes and a couple DVDs that came with my DVD player".
The way I figure it, if they're going to develop a game they should put it out on all platforms and be happy with the sales they get.  Sure, some will pirate, just like they did on PS2, Xbox, etc.  Add 'rewards' that people care about for legitimate purchasers (I'm looking at you Uplay with your weird point/reward system).

Make a game that people want to play and buy & most especially stop trying to punish the players who DO buy it on PC because you don't 'trust' us.  Your plan of downgrading the PC versions to get us to buy consoles won't work.

Yeah.. I dunno how this turned into an open letter on the internet... sorry

TLDR:  I'm salty

I'm going to try that. One question though:

My wife likes to use our desktop PC to do our accounts/paperwork/bills/pretend to do other stuff but really she's on Facebook etc.

Can she still do all that while my game streams downstairs to my living room PC? Or does it take over the screen?

I stopped at yout first sentence. I was a pirate (rampant, had hundreds of DVDs with pirate stuff). I stopped and tossed all awya when I got a good job at 23 years old 7 years ago, started to buy all I could and never looked back. I think it's a more complicated issue.

I keep getting emails from Nether after that Curse giveaway saying that my transaction has been initiated and payment is being processed.  These guys aren't Nigerian Princes, are they?

Eh, I don't think it's all that complicated, but I won't clog up the thread with the debate as it's really not the place for it.  I'll just say this: if you didn't go back and purchase everything you had previously pirated then my first sentence still stands.

You just validated what he said; you pirated when you couldn't afford it.

I pirate if I want to demo a game or watch a film before I blindly pay money for it. If I like it enough, I buy the thing. Simple.

I don't think so, but I haven't tried. From what I saw the stream was just streaming everything on the desktop.

I believe the vernacular is "idort".
Apple I-Dort home gaming console confirmed; costs $3,000 and only plays tablet games on your television at an upscaled resolution.

Damn thing sells millions and replaces traditional consoles in a matter of months. Because Apple.

I'm only going to say this about piracy, because the whole debate is kind of played out.

Here's why the notion is incorrect that says "pirates weren't going to buy it anyway," as it's basically a line of bullshit designed to make us feel better about or own wrongdoings.

1. There's no fucking way to prove or disprove that statement. However, logic says it is not so, as it is unlikely that a single idea holds true for 100% of the population involved in any activity.

2. Have you ever bought something, and then later wished you hadn't? Or maybe a few months later you got tired of it? Well, if you hadn't already paid for it, what are the odds you'd run down to the store and give them money for the item that had been in your possession for that time? Slim to none, I'd say.

If we only ever paid for things that we bought and ended up liking a lot, then we wouldn't be paying for much. No doubt it's true that some people are going to grab free stuff from a pile whether or not they want it -- but because it's free. But that is absolutely not always true, and that is where the logic in that statement fails.

/ done with pirate talk.

You see Gabe this is what happens when you don't put up good sales. You make us fight each other

The Golf Club, Next Car Game, and OOTP 15. Still massively disappointed at that community vote.
I've got The Golf Club and Next Car Game up there too, I'm really excited about both and I considered purchasing them multiple times.

Breath of Wind Indie Gala -- $1 for the first 24 hours:

Towers of Altrac (Desura)

Sang-Froid: Tales of Werewolves (Steam)

WindForge (Steam)

Final Slam 2 (Steam)

Lyne (Steam)

Critical Mass (Steam)

Oh cool, Lyne is in that one. I just bought it a few days ago on Steam. The good news is it is a really great, enjoyable puzzle game.

Alright, I have 100 games with cards available.  I'm going to leave a game on once a day for 100 days.  I estimate that by the winter sale I'll have around $30 in credit to spend.

I guess I have a bit of perspective when it comes to piracy. I was involved in indie music, and it's a weird experience to come across a site that's listing multiple CDs you were involved with. It's kind of flattering to see them right there in the midst of major label acts and so on, and then there's the reality that hey wait, I have those for sale! Piracy though, particularly if you are running a small time operation, is really not such a bad thing, because promotion is much more valuable in most instances than lost potential sales. Remember, a product has a finite value, that's how a million keys can be given away without losing millions of dollars.

For example, one artist I know had her video put up on Pirate Bay. She got around 300,000 plays off of that (which a lot of artists couldn't muster even with fake plays), and she also responded by putting her album up as a torrent. Not long after that, she was signed to a major label, had her own Vevo page and all of that.

Anyway, I wouldn't say that everyone who pirates wasn't going to buy it anyway. But, it's safe to say that most wouldn't. If we're going to toss around that 90% figure, we might as well say that 90% of the pirates never would have purchased the original product. Basically though, every time I've seen piracy blamed for something struggling, there's other, more logical reasons for the struggles.

Since I'm not sure whether preorders count:

Killing Floor 2 (Probably doesn't count: no price on storefront)
Wolfenstein: The New Order
Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor (May not count: preorder)
The Witcher 3 (Preorder)
Hellraid (No price on storefront)
Dead Rising 3 (Preorder)
Divinity: Original Sin
Murdered: Soul Suspect
I'm pretty sure it is games available for purchase. If you can't add it to your cart you won't win it.

My 3:
Wasteland 2
Spintires
Jagged Alliance Flashback
