My other thought was bad RAM.
Yeah, I suspected the RAM at first as well. But I've tried running the computer with different combos of RAM inserted (My default is 2 4GB & 2 2GB) and it still crashes. Plus I was able to test all the sticks on a friend's computer using memtest and all the sticks passed the test. So I'm pretty sure it's not that.

The only things that I haven't been able to eliminate as the culprit is the CPU, MOBO and the boot drive.

Over heating maybe? Is the CPU fan spinning?
Yeah, the fan is spinning. Overheating is something that I've suspected though. But CPUz says the the CPU temps aren't really that high. So I don't know.

New Steam beta lets you tag games in multiple categories. Finally you can have Sonic Transformed in Racing and RPG.

I've always tested RAM by just putting one stick at a time and running Memtest. I've never had a mobo that would boot without RAM.
I don't think it would boot like to the OS, but it would still turn on. If it still shuts down after a few seconds/minutes with just the MOBO then it definitely would be the MOBO.

Don't quote me on this, but if the new gear doesn't boot to windows with your existing hard drive, you might be able to do a repair if you have an install disc. Otherwise, I would suspect a reinstall would be necessary. I'd backup all you vitals (game save, configs, etc.) before doing anything.

Does the mobo have bad caps on it? Any leaking or look like the top is about to burst? Sounds like you've gone through all the "normal" troubleshooting steps. Good luck on the replace and reinstall.

You lost me there. What does that mean?
The capacitors. Look like little tiny soda cans almost. :p

If they aren't solid state ones, they can leak or burst, and render the mobo useless.

Yeah, I like this update:

July 23 - Steam Client Beta Update - July 23rd
We're beginning a new Steam Client Beta today which includes the following changes.

General
 • Major update of embedded web browser to increase performance, reliability, and to bring in various security fixes and functionality updates
 • Fixed in-game progress indicators for workshop downloads displaying incorrect percentages for compressed files

Library
 • Games can now be assigned to more than one category at a time
 • In desktop library details, list, and small views, games can be multiply selected using shift-click and control-click and certain operations can be performed on the group

Oh, I see. I would have never thought to check something like that. I'll have to get back to you on that one though. I'm not at home right now, so I can't check.

Thanks for all your help though. And thanks to everybody else for all your help.

I already have the new Mobo/CPU in hand, so I might as well try that out later when I get home. If that doesn't work, I'm gonna go buy a dog so I can kick it.

I don't understand why anyone would really utilize the new multi-category feature. Why would I want a single game to take up multiple spots in my library without the added benefit of an actual +1 to my count?

Edit: Actually, I can see one benefit: putting things into a "maybe play" pile without removing it from its normal designation. Alright, I like the new update now.

Edit2: Another thought, how is this going to affect Depressurizer? I don't think that's been updated for a while anyway, but it probably won't work with multiple categories, unless it always could and I just never tried it.

Being able to use the music player outside of big picture rocks... but I can't seem to be able to hide it while in a game. if I close it, then open the overlay, it pops up again.

Now that these promotions are over, I'll throw this question out there.

Anyone out there need Gun Monkeys or really Big Sky? Don't want to leave it to lurkers immediately, so I'll give it to FB haters first. Just PM!

So Nine Pin Bowling Simulator got added to the Flying Bundle with Desura keys.

the actual video is far more boring but here's the still image for the video on Flying Bundle.

I read this as "Underground" and just about diarrhead myself.

Then I remembered that EA would never put a game that has never been available digitally before on Steam, and cried a little when I found out I actually did diarrhea myself.
You can thank DrSasquatch for that.

:nottalking:
You are so welcome!

If still available, I'd +1 this. Thanks, Squatch, for this AND the loose stool.
Sent...

Well at least there isn't projectile vomit yet...

Now excuse me, gotta go buy stock in adult diaper makers.

Why would you put that in Racing?

Is there any way to disable Steam Guard? Getting really sick of that verification message.
you might wanna change your password, it only does that when you delete your cookies, or log in from another computer, or someone else does

Not Steam related, but you can get Sims 2: Ultimate Collection for free on Origin by using the code I-LOVE-THE-SIMS (use the "redeem a product code" box).

Credit to Louiedog for the heads up.
thanks, rajeeshka lied to me, said it would update automatically.

now i can create cags and enjoy the hilarity that ensues

or just lock you all in a room and watch all of you pee yourselves until you starve

Quick computer question if it's OK.

I've been having some major computer problems of late. The friggin thing has been shutting down on me after a few minutes or whenever I try to do something that is the slightest bit taxing. Through the process of elimination, I'm pretty sure that it was the motherboard that was the culprit. So I went and bought this combo from Micro Center earlier today. It's not really much of an upgrade over my current Mobo/CPU, but it was cheap and I should be able to run my computer for longer than 15 minutes without it crashing.

So my question is, will I need to do a fresh install of windows? Or can I just boot up the computer after I change the mobo/CPU?

I can't imagine that it would be that simple. But wishful thinking and a desire to shortcut past several hours of Windows (and other program) installs makes me ask.
assuming it is the motherboard and not the power supply (generic power supplies are usually crap no matter their rated wattage)

all you have to do is boot into safe mode, then go to device manager, enable show hidden devices, remove all the motherboard related drivers (audio, network, system, usb, sata etc there might be more but I'm a little drunk right now) then reboot and Windows should install your drivers for the new motherboard automatically to get you up and running. You'll probably have to manually update crucial ones such as the ones I've listed previously in this drunken response......

hehe spanky, spanky

No, I'm logging in from different computers so it's fine. It's not someone else. But i log into Steam sometimes at my school and I'm sick of SteamGuard getting in my way.

I haven't seen this mentioned yet..

Trine 1 is now the "enchanted edition". A patch just went live for it. There's been a beta for it since June, but now the official version is out.

It's been ported over to the Trine 2 engine, and includes online co-op.

Interested in one of the games in the upper tiers of the Squeenix Humble Bundle but don't want to pay the full tier price?? Now's your chance to (maybe) get it on the cheap!! The turnout for Round 1 was so good, I pitched in the difference for another full bundle, all of the purchase going straight to Make-A-Wish!! Everything is up for grabs this time, including the Hitman games and Lara Croft!

Check it out here.
Morning reminder to check out my mini-auction for Make-A-Wish (and cheap games). Just under four hours remaining! Ends between 11:56 and 12:05, depending on how the digital die is cast (10-sider ftw). Happy bidding!

So if you want to help get some 2hard4u crappy minimalist flash game onto Steam and get a free key for it you can go here and reserve one. Personally, I passed and I usually do all these offers and then take a shower afterwards to try to get rid of that dirty feeling.

Here's what the devs had to say about this game:

We've noticed a disturbing trends with games lately. They are just too easy and lack real challenge. It's as if it seems people have traded graphics for substance, and we're here to fix that.
Right, that's such a disturbing trend with indie games these days. All graphics and they are never hard.

I don't even see it having cards either. What the hell would it have a card of, an ink blot?

Anyway figured some people might want to know because free.

*Edited to add: Since it says "For Indie Kings Fans only" you might need to join their Steam group.

It's only 19.99 for the enhanced version, but if you own the original, you can get 40% off until July 31st.

You forgot the amazing indie game soundtrack.

I think today's Casio keyboards come with an "Indie Game" button between "Rock" and "Samba" that generates these things.

Anyway, this guy should go out for coffee with the A-Men devs and share stories about how current game trends are for too-easy-hand-holding games.

From store page:

Both Trine Enchanted Edition as well as the original Trine are included in the Enchanted Edition. The different versions are selectable from the game launcher. All Trine purchases have been automatically updated to Trine Enchanted Edition.

This doesn't matter much for me personally, but people with keys of Trine 1 lying around, will they function as Enchanted Edition now? I imagine they would, since the original isn't up for sale since it's been combined, but I'm curious.

They upgraded everyone that owns it, so that should apply to all past and future keys.
