You're oversimplifying it and doing people here who might be on the fence a disservice. I've conceded that it's not fully any one type of game but to ignore how heavily it relies on scarce drops/RNG is dishonest. This one time, I played Final Fantasy 7. I would be looking to upgrade my equipment, so I had two options.
1. I could farm for the currency of the game, known as Gil, and just buy the equipment.
2. I could fight hundreds of enemies in the same spot on the off chance that one of them might drop that equipment I need.
Needless to say, I went with option 2 because Final Fantasy 7 is a loot based game.
Not everyone has an exorbitant amount of time to "grind it out". So while I understand what you're saying about marks and reputation, that isn't exactly my idea of "fun" when there is currently so little content to go with it. It's like Bungie is artificially padding the game. You really think it makes sense to put an RNG on an exotic engram worth 23 freaking mote??? That's the kind of weird shit I'm talking about and even Bungie vaguely acknowledged it. And, hell, even after you've acquired legendary equipment you still have to find the material to fully upgrade it. So basically it's a matter of loot vs mindless grind. Shouldn't be a surprise why so many exploited the treasure cave (even if I disapprove). I almost wish I had.
