You wouldn't take advantage of 20% off new games? Really?

If you took advantage of the $7 deal, the GCU membership would pay for itself if you bought just one $59.99 game for $47.99 over the next two years. Then again, if you don't have a nearby Best Buy, I understand why you wouldn't go for it.
As others I have mentioned, I do not buy new games unless there is a new version of LBP for the kids. I decided once LBP2 became free on Plus and I got it digital instead of using the disc. That works so well I am ok with paying the premium to get a digital version to avoid my kids dealing with swapping discs. Outside of that, I just wait for Gamefly.

So Comcast keeps nagging me to upgrade my modem which I rent from them.

Thing is, my current modem from them works great, never cuts out, and I almost always get the speeds I'm supposed to be getting while using it.  You don't fix what isn't broken, ya know.

So I don't see how it benefits me to get their new "upgraded" modem because there's no way it will improve anything since my current modem works so well.  Am I missing anything here?  I keep ignoring Comcast's requests for me to upgrade.

If upgrading means you pay Comcast more money, then they don't care if it will improve anything for you.

They want you to get the modem that has a separate wifi channel for this xfinity wifi deal.

Basically want you to be a free hotspot for them.

Tell them to go fuck themselves.

Also go to best buy and buy your own modem. Leasing is stupid.

I have the 50mbps down plan, works great.

actually the upgraded modem has wireless built in... no more wireless router needed. Been using it for a year and a half and actually love it. Especially because I wired my PS4 straight into it and because it's the modem too I get open NAT without doing any setting changes.

Are you afraid to leave your house?
It is similar to your anti-restaurant soda stance, unless a movie greatly benefits from being shown on the big screen, going to the movies is huge waste of money. In a few months you can rent it for less than $2 (or buy it for around the price of two tickets) and watch it from the comfort of your own home with reasonably priced snacks and beverages.

They need you to replace it because they are running out of IPv4 addresses. The older modems do not support IPv6 and the newer ones do. Also, the newer modems could possibly mean higher speeds at peak hours since they will be Docsis 3.0 instead of 2.0 and likely will be able to bond more downstreams together. There may be extra bandwidth on other downstreams available so that your download speed stays constant. So there are possible benefits to you, but relatively unlikely.

With that said, they have been bugging me too, and I have ignored it. If they want me to switch then they can send me a new device to the house and I will install it. I am not going to the Comcast store to help them out more than it helps me out.

While this is rooted in truth, it is not totally true. If you dont want to help them with wifi for other customers, then you can call and tell them to put your modem in bridged mode and the router functionality is turned off. With it in that mode, you have to have your own router of course.

Even with it on, it is not part of your bandwidth or download limits.

Unless your modem from them is really old, highly doubt its docsis 2.

My old modem was but id had it since I was in college and it was like 7-8 years old. When we upgraded to x1 it came with upgrade in speed and old modem didnt cut it a that speed so I bought the new one.

Telling you, they want you to be a wifi hotspot. Yes the new modem has wifi built in, but it has another wifi signal thats used for the xfinity wifi stuff, so people can use your internet you pay for. Doesnt count against your data cap if you live in an area with one, but is still pretty stupid.

That involves talking to comcast.

You really dont want to talk to them for anything.

Trust me.

They dont tell you about it unless you ask or know about it. If they gave a discount on your plan for doing it, fine, but screw off otherwise.

You might want to listen to the person that wrote SW for cable modems for 10 years. Just saying...

They're offering to mail it to me, but I just keep ignoring it. If/when this one starts having issues maybe I'll let them know to send me a new one.

Well, now. Don't you $15 people feel dumb? The local Best Buy has these in stock. I guess I need to do this!
I don't feel dumb for getting a great deal on GCU. My membership was going to expire so I got renewed the previous week for $30 and Sunday for $15. If you took the money I've paid for GCU I'm already in a profit from the program.

Chewy you need to remember not all CAGs bitch about getting a better deal later and just realize the deal they got was good enough at the time of purchase. Now there's a better deal but I'm not going to cry about it on the Internet.

GCU is the best program at this time for buying NEW video games.

I didn't even think about that. That would be bad for me. I have my current modem near the wall on the far side of my house then run a 60 foot ethernet cord up and around my wall and back down to where my router is in the middle of my house, so I can hard-wire things behind my TV like my PS4 and my smart TV that doesn't have wifi.

If I get this new modem/router combo I'll have to redo my setup, which was already a pain in the ass. fuck that I'm riding this old modem out til it dies.

Yeah, it's gonna suck. I'll essentially not be able to play it (well, online anyway) the first day I buy it since I won't be home with the physical disc until after 5. I thought I read the reason for it is that they filled the Blu Ray disc, which is slightly more forgivable than a massive day 1 patch that could have been added to the disc. But still, throwing in a second disk would have been the better way to go.
I thought ALL Xbox users love multiple discs games. Sony never gave us that love.

Nope. I'm good until 2020 now lol. I bought one for $35 after getting that $5 freebie rewards yesterday I bought a $40 LG Tribute phone normally $80 which runs android and I'll give it to my kid to play with. It would be great as an ipod like device or just a media player as well. It can take a 32GB micro sd card. I was actually shocked at how good it was for the money. I didn't even have to activate it, got it working on wifi, downloading some games etc. Woot woot.

Yeah, Binding has been ok so far but my biggest gripe is not knowing what most the shit does. Like crunchewy said, the game doesn't even tell you what buttons to press to use items and stuff.

I mean, eventually I guess I'll learn or just look it up. But I don't get why games do stuff like that. It's not like me not knowing what the unicorn horn thingy does makes the game any harder, just stupider because it didn't tell what to do with it. Maybe devs just want their hardcore fans to feel superior after they've played the game or something.
I found it much more fun and manageable to figure out what items do on my own in Spelunky. Also Spelunky has a tutorial to give you the basics. Binding definitely could use that, and many of the items are not obvious at all what they do. In the end I'll look them up because I do think the game is fun.

No reason you could not keep the exact same setup. Your router should work just fine behind there's via the LAN connection you have. You could disable their router functionality completely like I mentioned by having it put in bridge mode.

EDIT: I guess you cant since it seems the router is also from them.

We basically agree though, not sure what you're adding beyond what I said?
It was more the FUD about the extra wifi SSID that is used for other Comcast customers. Personally, I like that since I can go to a friends house who has Comcast and dont have to worry about getting the wifi password from them.

Also, Docsis 3.0 is not as old as you think. Most people who have modems are 2.0 and not 3.0 unless they are very new.

I wish I could figure out how to set up bridge mode with my FiOS modem. I have a good AC router that I'm using, but it has IP 192.168.2.1 because the FiOS modem is 192.168.1.1. And this seems to cause some issues. I wish I could figure out how to make the FiOS modem just be a modem. I tried to set it up like that but it didn't work.

Oh i thought 2006 was old at this point?

DOCSIS 3.0 Released August 2006, the specification was revised to significantly increase transmission bandwidth (this time both upstream and downstream) and introduce support for Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6).

Modem I have.

On amazon

  • Date first available at Amazon.com: June 1, 2011
3 years old tech is new now?

Maybe the crap lease modems comcast has are just really old, no idea, but docsis 3 is not really new. I still stand by my opinion that the stupid free wifi is dumb. Doesnt work half the time ive tried to connect to them around where I live.

I do work on fiber to the home stuff now, but the ones Verizon uses are more of a proprietary solution and I do not have personal experience with them to know how to set them up. Otherwise, I would try to help out.

The spec is old yes. Modems that were available that complied to the spec that the cable companies had available for consumers is another thing entirely. Comcast really had no desire to start selling them when they first came out. They were more expensive. Once they hit IP address exhaustion, their tune changed.

ACIV stopped at the beginning of sequence 11 last night. I actually considered pre-ordering Unity with GCU but just can't justify it currently. I have MG: Ground Zeroes on deck and then I'll probably go do Infamous 2, Festival of Blood, and Second Son so I'm ready for First Light in January. Uncharted 3 in 3D is sort of calling my name too though.

Which is what I said in my post, comcast has old modems then. Basically comcast is the devil and you should buy your own equipment.

Thank you. I haven't been able to get past the first night due to this
I got to what I assumed was the end of the first night several times last night, but couldn't figure out how to open the giant lock that showed up on the screen. Just got too frantic and time ran out. I'm enjoying it, but havn't made it far at all.

Topside, you seem to be the thread expert so far on it (at least trophy wise). Any tips?

I cant disagree with that, but until Comcast approved the 3.0 modems for a region you could not even buy them retail in that local market. You would be surprised (or maybe not) how much their decision making affects everything including what is on the shelf at Best Buy.

Swipe them with your finger a few times and they'll break.

I've gotten a lot of the trophies knocked out and currently only need 5 stickers to complete the book, but my progress is going to slow down to a crawl when I go back to work tonight.

In my opinion, it's just laziness. It wouldn't take a hell of a lot to add item descriptions, or even tell you how to use them as it would be all text boxes. But they don't feel like doing it, so instead they say it's done to make the game more hardcore, and fanboys will buy into that excuse and trash anyone who questions it.

So in order to get the $10 bonus certs for BB pre-orders you have to pick them up in store? What do they think I'm going to buy an appliance or computer every time I walk in the door? Lame.

You can have them shipped to your house and still get the cert.

I usually pre-order my games online for either ship to home or instore pickup. You'll get your $10 certificate around 15 days (usually sooner) after purchase. As long as you pre-order and pick up game/ship to home within a week you'll get your $10 certificate.

I haven't played it yet, but there is this:

And this where he says all items will have a description:

Maybe stuff is still not showing up, I dunno, but it's pretty clear he's going for part of the game challenge being from having to figure items out.

Yeah I get blamed by Time Warner everytime I have an issue. They try to tell me I'm degrading the signal in too many spots and that's why I am having problems. And everytime it ends up being something outside the house that's their fault. The last time a guy came out I asked him if I could get a new remote as I was having issues with it. He told me he couldn't do anything unless he could "fix" all the wiring, because if he leaves and anything happens then it's on him. A damn remote control...really? I told him to just worry about getting the signal working properly to the house and let me worry about the 0 problems I'm having inside it.

Looks like Game INformer and Gaemspot both picked up that Activision is blocking Share Play on Advanced Warfare. Which is good, hopefully this picks up a bit of outrage. Couldn't care less about Advanced Warfare but it sets a bad precedent.

I don't really have anything against Activision or COD but I kind of can't wait for the day that franchise crashes and burns or at least sells less. I could also be a bit begrudged due to the fact that they've been shitting out awful Spider-Man games as of late. I'd even take a re-done PS1 Spider-Man. I realize games like COD are good for us as a whole but still....

God cag sucks lately. fucking posts not showing as posted, random double posts from people that go away.

Is cag on a docsis 2 modem or something?
