Nintendo Wi-Fi hotspots at McDonalds across the country!

Nintendo made an agreement with the company that supplies Wifi for McDonalds to have free wifi for the DS.

So basically they don't really have any maintenance. Making agreements is the smart way to go about this.

Really all they're doing is prepping their call center to handle all the... not so wise with routers and such.

From my post in this thread: http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=69362&page=1&pp=20

Just wanted to put in my told you so. :p

Gotta give Nintendo props for having the smartest... smarts... of the gaming industry on that move. I'll go there with my little neice a little more often now. XD

nothin seems more nerdy than havin a big mac in one hand and a video game system in the other. I guess you could have a shirt saying the Truth Is Out There on, but thats about it

This is pretty smart... All the little kids want to go to McDonalds anyway for their happy meals, now they can go play their DS, too.

They'll probably make a deal with a coffee shop chain for the older crowd, if they haven't already.

That's why you'll see a lot more DS owners taking their little (insert family member here) with them. Yeah. ¬ ¬''

McD's food is poison anyways.

Why not Wendy's? Better food and they've promoted Nintendo products before (then again, I think everyone but Taco Bell has). But I'm just being whiny now. =X

Probably because McD's already has Wi-Fi service at their locations... whereas no other national fast good chain does (by that I mean Taco Bell, Wendy's, BK), at least to my knowledge.

Sweet 5 MCds around me have it...

For the time I will sit in the parking lot and play some Mario Kart action on a few lunches.
I'd be happier if it was Taco Bell.
HELL fuckin' yeah!

...anyways, though I personally wouldn't use this (I rarely eat at McDonald's), it's good to see Nintendo doing what it can to make things easier to connect. I'm impressed.

Taco Bell did in 1997. They had 5 different N64 toys (N64 controller with Mario Kart ball track game, Yoshi figurine, Mario 64 ball puzzle and 2 others) along with a contest where you could collect cardboard tokens and try to win prizes.

Id have more fun sitting out by my pool on a nice cool night and just using my wireless router from my house. But then again thats just me......

Wow, I'd rather play at home as well. Thats what I have a wireless network at home for. Nintendo has some pretty odd ideas. The DS is a pretty innovative piece of hardware, but Nintendo is being too slow releasing the cool stuff for it. I bought a PSP coz i knew I could go online and play people as soon as I bought it. I had to wait nearly a year with the DS. It's a shame too. The DS is a great system, but the lack of any infrastructure mode for a year made me go out and buy a PSP, and now I'm loving it and the DS is sitting on the side.

And when Nintendo has one in place, you'll be playing amazing games online on your DS. :)

Wow...I don't know where to start.
I'll just ask 2 simple questions, How many PSP games are online enabled? How many are sports?
According to this ezgoal site, there are no McDonalds in the 972 area code with wifi.
Yep, only thing in my area code with Wifi is the Borders.

You beat me to it. Here is the current list of PSP Infrastructure enabled games available now according to Sony's site.

ATV Offroad Fury: Blazin' Trails
Gretzky NHL
Gretzky NHL '06
Madden NFL 06
Mercury
Metal Gear Acid
NBA
NBA '06
Twisted Metal: Head-On™
World Series of Poker

While that has the DS beat (obviously), 5 of the 10 games are sports titles, and 2 of the remaining 5 don't offer actual head-to-head play against another player.

I will venture a guess that once Mario Kart DS is released, it will have more people playing online than all of the PSP online games combined.

This is true. Actually, I should have also stated my real reason for the PSP...the homebrew scene. You can do pretty much anything with a large enough memory stick. The DS will definitely have grade A games running on infrastructure such as Mario Kart and Metroid, but again...I waited close to a year for this. I mean I understand it's a smart marketing move, but at the same time...the DS has the possibility for so much more. For example, the DS would be able to browse the net 20 times better than the PSP because you can use the bottom screen as a makeshift keyboard / mouse. Has Nintendo capitalized on this? No. The DS would be one hell of an AIM / Messenger type client as well...there was a rumor that meetros was going to be released, but I dont know if this anything more than a rumor. Sad fact is, Nintendo HAD me when I bought the system. However, right now the PSP has my loyalty for all the things I can do with it. If you have a 2.0+ PSP then hands down I'd be playing my DS. I'm not wanting to start a flame war and I hate when people talk trash about certain systems (including the DS)...however, I just wanted people to understand what I meant by too little too late. If and When Nintendo releases infrastructure for the DS, chances are I'm going to love my DS a whole lot more than the PSP for a while. Until then...I'll keep messing with the PSP.

I totally agree with your statements about a DS web browser and AIM client. I know that DSTalk was "introduced" at E3 but Nintendo has since stated that it won't be a product.

Maybe once the official online announcement is made we'll find out about more applications like web browers, etc.

Metal Gear Acid does NOT have infrastructure

Also, all those sports titles from EA
If you intend to get online, though, you'll need to go through EA's convoluted account signup process and also agree to get spammed by ESPN or else pay $2 for the privilege of playing online. Once you do get through all that rigamarole, you'll find that there aren't very many people playing online at all.
