Gotcha. I know a lot of local breweries (Indeed, 612, and Surly come immediately to mind) only do cans except for extra special one-time releases. Now I know why.

Well from what I gather canning equpiment is cheaper than bottle equipment plus bottles themselves cost more than cans.

So most likely for the cost vs the difference between a bottle and can that only beer snobs care about.

That new Battlegrounds thing does look pretty cool. I gotta get in on that 3.0 shit for my kid here, but I can wait for a really good sale since there's no 4.0 coming this year.

Why were cans always looked down upon before the craft beer craze? Bottles were always considered "better" by everyone I ever heard talk about beer. Beer was only ever made in a can so you could take it to places that didnt want broken bottles. Like the beach.

1554 is actually the only New Belgium beer I've tried yet. As I said at that time, it is damn good.

Bottles are definitely more enjoyable to drink out of aesthetically. I only drink to get a buzz in any case, it all pretty much taste the same to me. Not terrible, but why am I drinking this? I find beer too filling also. I'll always prefer a couple shots.

 
Oh and I asked about 80 acre hoppy wheat beer from Boulevard in here the other day. No one answered but I decided to try it anyway. I like it, alot actually. It's probably the first wheat beer that I've tried that I would buy again.

Early cans did suck. Way back when many had the equivalent of a sticker over the opening and they did not have the plastic lining technology like you do today. Also, the seaming for the top was not as sophisticated.

Now, canning technology makes it a superior product. Not to mention the lower transportation costs for cans versus bottles due to weight reduction and the cans taking up less space. Also aluminum costs less to recycle than glass.

As far as the start up costs, that is not entirely true. For Ball to even deal with you, you have to make huge orders of cans so you have to have the space to store all the blanks. Plus, you need a separate huge order for each of your beers. There are definitely trade offs for going with cans. Some breweries even do a blank can and then attach a sticker for the beer to avoid that issue. That is only legal in a few states.

I didnt see this I guess but they have a Saison, Tank 7 that is amazing. And the Sixth Glass quad is good, but not great.

If this is really the case now they should stop making bottles for soda or beer period. Save the environment and all.

I assume the glass manufacturers would scream though and pay a shit ton to lobbyists to keep that from happening.

yeah unfortunately I dont like cheap beer anymore. THANKS GATOR! but at least its tasty!

The only "cheap" beer I like anymore is Blue Moon and even that is always considered "craft" or an "import" by any place I go to drink it, so its a buck more than regular old bud.

On a related note, the state shaped beer cap maps are cool in theory. In practice, not enough breweries in Indiana bottle. And of the ones that do, a lot have plain gold bottle caps. Kinda which we'd sprung for the full USA one instead. Gonna have to upgrade eventually.

Personally, I'd be fine with filling in the rest of indiana with Three Floyd's caps. I'll take a pic of what we've got done so far when I get home, but a lot of them are just regular with notes in sharpie on the back of what they were lol. Pretty sure the bf started filling in the corners with beer from neighboring states after he realized we were never going to get that many indiana caps.

It is a good one, but there are a lot better ones out there in the style. It is one of the more affordable ones for the style though.

Tank 7 is the best Saison made in the US that I have tried and it is not even close. It is one of very few beers that I would be perfectly happy with keeping stocked in the fridge all the time that is not an IPA.

With that said, the style may not be for everyone. If you happen to hate wheat beers (even though it is very different) you likely would not like it.

Gator, is it important to make sure any style of beer aside from an IPA is super-fresh? I know some stouts may actually get better with age. Mainly referring to Ales and such. I know that Tank 7 has been at this store for a good while.

I don't hate wheat beers, it's just that most of the ones I've tried have been bland and boring. Granted I haven't tried that many.

Very loaded question. Generally, you want fresher beer but it is not as important for beers that are less hop forward than IPAs and pale ales. Generally, the higher the ABV the longer they can go. If it is a sour (which tends to be lower ABV) aging usually helps too.

Barrel aged beers have more booze flavors when fresher. Some (like me) prefer that. Others want it to mellow.

Had one recently and never heard of them before and liked the style.
