PSNOT 3.0 - Let's Talk About University of Kentucky, Baby!

After going to sign the save me money paperwork at the car dealer, I decided to stop in at a local brewpub for lunch so that Zimm would not be the only one drinking during the work day today (yeah I know wren is probably boozing it up somewhere but at least I got to as well).
HEY! I rizembel htat merark!

I actually took a 2 hour lunch today and didnt have any alcohol!  Im getting better!

Went to Seasons 52.  Swank little place on Westshore which is basically downtown.  Well it is to me anyway since im a redneck from the country compared to the types that typically dine there.  Nothing but Porsche, Mercedes and fancier sports cars in the parking lot.  My Elantra certainly stood out.  I think the two hot chicks with the short skirts that got out of the Lexus next to me were snickering about me.

I still stared at their asses though.  HOT!

You passed on the coors light!? Even after gator totally judged you for liking sweet child of brine? You disgust me.

Jah won't pay the bills, but eBay sure will. I used to care more about RSD, but it gets more and more vinyl focused every year. With all the other crap I buy, I don't want to start a vinyl collection too.
You want to.

And I can send you all these extra ariana grande vinyls I got for my birthday.

My job sucks and we're less than 30 days until close on the house and we cannot get a house landed in Portland. We may have to back out with our tail between our legs. Feel better?
I told you the housing market was real tight here. Especially if you're looking for desirable locations in the city. I've had a few co-workers spend 6 months or so looking and they kept getting outbid by cash offers.

There are more options and better housing opportunities out in the suburbs (Beaverton, Tigard, Lake Oswego, etc, etc), just depends how much of your time you're willing to sacrifice to commuting.

Finished Sat Morning RPG last night. If the game didn't have the nostalgia theme , it would be borderline un-playable. The combat was really dull, the enemy weakness weren't varied enough to necessitate switching of weapons.

The storyline, references and maybe some old-school charm make it worth playing though.
Yeah, if you were looking for any sort of depth to the combat, you were looking in the wrong place. It was more about making the battles fast and fairly simple so you could get back to exploring and the references and stuff.

I admittedly do not know a lot about Pete, but my guess is he is the type that gets cold sweats when he hears the word suburbs.
naw, I'm all suburbs these days. I have no issues with living in the city or even in sketchy neighborhoods, but I'm also not interested in paying a massive premium to live in a shittier neighborhood and a smaller/more run down house if there's alternatives with reasonable stuff to do within a short drive. because I'm not an idiot.

but even the burbs around portland are a fucking nuthouse. I've never heard of anything like it. the normal sequence is:

1. house goes on market Thurs/Fri

2. has open houses Sat and/or Sun

3. reviews offers Monday

pretty much every house that comes on follows that pattern and is pending by Tuesday or so.

so far there's been at least 7-8 offers on every house we've tried for and we've been outbid when we're at 10-15% over asking. people give exactly zero fucks too - they're posting listing pictures with dirty dishes and trash in their kitchen or people changing their oil in the front yard. no presentation, no dolling up the place, no hgtv shit here - and they're still getting tons of money thrown at them. people are buying run-the-fuck-down houses for the same prices as done up houses just for the lot!

the house we're currently bidding on isn't even allowing showings, didn't submit pictures to mls and they have an unmanageable timeframe because they have "uncooperative tenants". we hunted down some pictures from an older listing and facebook though and we're ballsy enough to throw what we can at the owner and hope for the best (PMA). But I'm guessing $45k over and taking the house as-is probably still won't be enough.

So yeah, we're at the point now where we might be boned. We're stalling on the post-inspection period on our house in case we have to bail (which we REALLY don't want to do) but it's pretty daunting to have to find an entirely new location at this point that isn't so crazy with only a theoretical 30ish days to find somewhere to live and move.

I may very well be stuck in KC forever like some horrible twilight zone episode or that star trek episode where they walk out the door of the bridge and end up on the other side of the bridge.

Interesting. Houses are getting snapped up quick and going for way more than they're worth in SLC. So no surprise that a primo Pacific NW location is having that happen on a far bigger scale.

Speaking of HGTV shit, I was watching an episode of House Hunters the other night and these people were buying a house in Tampa. I couldn't believe how cheap shit is there. 200-250k for pretty large sized houses.

WHERE in Tampa though? 200-250 in my neighborhood is less than 2K square feet. Or it needs a lot of work. That isnt big here. But yeah its Florida. Other than Miami everything is relatively cheap here.

Yeah, I bet he's all about the fast paced hustle and bustle of modern metropolises just like everyone else I know in Kansas...
Even in smaller cities it is a big difference in living in town and in the suburbs though. Pretty sure not too many suburban families are taking family trips to thrift stores very often.

And Barca is out, lost 3-2 aggregate to Atletico.

All 4 quarterfinal matchups ended 3-2 aggregate.

took the words right out of my mouth.

Sounds like 2007-2008 all over again.

Gotta buy now before these prices get so high you cant afford it!

2009 hits and people are fuckED.
Thing is though that crash was due to people getting loans they could not afford. I am pretty certain that is not the case this time. Even with the crazy prices, it is not that much more in terms of a mortgage monthly payment than a decent apartment.

Seems more like inflation to me.

yeah, unfortunately this is probably true - people are moving north from SF and other california locales because they can telecommute and rent/buy a house in Portland for ~$3k/month and it's still cheaper than their 400sqft 1 bedroom in Silicon Valley. google/ebay/intel/etc offices with more undeveloped nature surrounding the area and they're expecting to be the next tech hub but with less work/life problems. I just wanted to look at some mountains, have access to cool record stores and be able to drive to the ocean. I don't really give a shit about the potential career opportunities. they're ruining it for everybody!

But my question is where are all these people coming from? You would think rents would collapse with all the people buying houses, yet they arent...because those people are still renting. The people buying are either really wealthy and can move whenever or their investors not actually looking to move in.

I say this because it isnt just Portland. Though Portland is clearly one of the fastest growing markets if not the fastest.

From rural areas. The population is starting to get even more condensed around metro areas than it was before.

Even Pete is a good example of that moving from a smaller city to the metro area of a larger one.

ETA: As much as we give Tyler shit for SLC, it is still a metro area. Atlanta, Portland, and the I-4 corridor are on different levels, but it is still a larger population center than the surrounding area.

Yup, city life is in. People are realizing they want to have things to do close to them. Not wanting to drive 45 minutes to shop at Target and eat at Carls Jr.
