Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

Kind of sick of this "we charge now, but ship in February" bs kickstarter model of doing business.  I remember it took forever to get Summon Night 5 delivered after paying for it.

EDIT: oh good, now I see that there will be standard edition retail copies available in Q1 2017.

This brings a physical disc game right? Im kinda confused by the following stamement. I assume the voucher they are talking is about your receipt proving you purchased the game and not an actual game downloaded voucher right???

"Your credit card will be charged for this digital reservation voucher purchase in approximately 1-3 days, and the reservation voucher code reserving your game (and specific serial number for the hologram) will be emailed to you then"

Yes, it includes a physical copy of the game. Amazon payments doesn't really allow for "pre-orders" so they're working about it by selling you a "digital reservation voucher" now, that will get you the product later. Basically they're telling Amazon they're selling you your email confirmation as a loophole, kinda.

 
The value is decent...I would measure it closer to $100, but some of the stuff is great like the full soundtrack and art book. No way I'm paying that, even with the full art book... I do want this and will get the regular edition though, and so far it may be my only January game (if it comes out on time....Gajinworks games are notorious for being delayed). 

 
Anyone got some gameplay footage? Tempted to throw my money at em, but hesitating cause don't know if this is something I would play. Played the CoH series, never touched summon night though.

 
They are turn based strategy games.....good maybe not great....decent art though. I do agree a game worth getting, but maybe not crazy LE price unless you want it. Gajinworks games are produced in lower quantities though, so the value of the physical copies doesn't go down much at all. 

 
All I want from the CE really is the artbook. Looks like I can take my time deciding, but I feel like I've seen that artbook before (Similar cover layout to an Atelier artbook I suppose). Guess I should make a calendar alert for the first of September so I don't forget.

Summon Night 5 was definitely a low point for the series, though it's still better than most of the other SRPGs we get in English lately. Summon Night 6 seems to be about the same from what I've been reading, but gets more points for bringing back old characters and hitting that nostalgia factor. That pretty much means jack all to most everybody here, except for any characters in SN5 they bring back. So if you've played Summon Night 5 and enjoyed it, then you will probably enjoy 6.

Hmm not sure I want that Summon Night CE either.  The front page of Gaijinworks was boosting it was going to be the best valued CE of the decade lol.  I think that made my expectations too high. The plush looks awesome tho.

Edit - I wish Vic didn't let him not being a fan of steelbooks stop him from putting one in.  I would love to see more steels for less mainstream games, especially jrpgs.

It looks like the consensus is that it will be a fighting game, but I'm hoping for a puzzle game like a licensed/reskinned Puyo Puyo.

A nep fighting game with all of IF's characters would be awesome. Hopeing it plays like power stone or smash bros.
My second wish would be for a kart game!
 
What ever happened to the Four Goddesses Online game, with Vert as the main character?

Also, hoping this one turns into a Guilty-Gear, Persona 4 Arena styled anime fighter. But we'll probably get Mario Party with Neptune and friends. 

 
With that premium price, the Summon Night CE seems like you're supporting the development more in the short term like a Kick Starter. Not saying it's not gonna be worth it down the road and it does look beautiful, but that price tag considering the contents, seems like the overall physical value is taking a backseat in order to support development or localization. Though again, maybe this thing could end up being worth much more than the original asking price. So there is that too!

The fact that the CE for the last game is on sale now gives me some doubt about that,

 
Things like the Summon Night CE are only "worth more" if you're actually planning on selling it, which kind of defeats the purpose.

Summon Night 5 LE is basically just an extra soundtrack. There is no way Summon Night 6 LE will be as common with all the extra stuff.

They are making as many copies as people order, that's what it says in the listing so we'll see how "rare" it becomes.

 
I think that Summon Night 6 LE is a bit too much. No idea what the poster looks like and you only get a random color plushy. I've heard that Gaijin likes to do random items with their releases, but at that price, I should know exactly what I'm getting.

I do also think though that this is more likely to be rare. I'd imagine the UMDs for summon night 5 couldn't be made to specific numbers, probably only in large lots, plus, they have to make a few extra for any that need to be exchanged.

Well, I was hoping that Rice Digital's Gal*Gun collector's edition wouldn't sell out and fall in price due to the $30 shipping... but that ship has sailed.
Bleh... I hope I'll be able to find it on eBay for a similar price at some point.

I wouldn't worry to much about it at this point, as Steins Gate LE sold out several times, and was offered in many different forms over that first 12 months.

 
I like card games,  but yeah that was a disappointing announcement. If it was to get localized I would be happy, but the chance is just low. Also I don't think i'm buying Asterisk War Vita game....I was going to stew on it and likely get it if it was $29.99, but $39.99 is just a bit too high. The battles also look extremely basic and the graphics in those look low quality from what I've seen in videos. Oh well....Shiren is out this week anyway and should be arriving today I believe!

I was unable to tell if this is the end of the series or if they'll be continuing it with another main character. Does anyone know?

I've been with Kazuma since day 1, but it's definitely time for his story to come to an end. He can only get out of that life then get dragged back into it so many times. Plus the story is getting pretty stale with pretty much every game being some conspiracy that ends with a shirtless fight against the person behind it.

Also some things have gotten pretty ridiculous
Kazuma beating the whole opposite gang by himself at the end of his chapter in Yakuza 5 was hilariously stupid

Don't really know where to post this but... I saw that Miku x Adventure Time figure at SDCC.

It is so tiny for the $50 they're asking. The whole thing is like 2.5" tall in a 3" box. Miku herself is like an inch tall. I'm regretting putting an order down for two.

why the hell wouldn't they release the last title in the trilogy on ps3? Its not like it would sell much if at all on ps4 since thats a system with none of their user base on it from the prior games. psvita release being an if is equally fuck ing stupid. I shouldn't be surprised by this though considering loh and kh love to play musical chairs with their games.

PS4 because the lag on PS3/Vita was honestly freaking stupid. My little bro was playing it the other day and I'm still wondering, how does it lag so bad? I love Falcom and I love what they put out. With that said, that "Fyre Engine/Fire Engine/whatever-engine-that-sounds-like-a-fire-engine" is showing its age. Badly. Even in Ys 8 (?).

I wonder if Falcom will jump on the Unreal Bandwagon. A bunch of games are starting to use that. Even Ace Combat 7 is running it. Heck I won't be surprised when the next Tales game starts using it (after Berseria). I'll even go out on a limb to say Nintendo will develop a game on the NX using the Unreal Engine. Or is that the new Zelda? Lol JK...

*Imagines Trails in The Sky Remastered with the Unreal 4 Engine* God, I'd buy that on Day One. Add Go Shiina's orchestra and team to update the music for bonus points.

This is great news for me as that is about how much room I have left to display figures.
