Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

most depressing thing about all this  yakuza talk is I'll never get my dragon force game only played 1 on the Saturn an always wanted to play the second but was JP only. then it got release for ps2 but again JP only.

so hear am dreaming of a reboot/remake, just for them to sit back an say sale are not worth it, not good enough to bother. /sigh

hmm is this fate telling me to buy it? But I don't need more games >.> I just took a look at my backlog and its up to 111 now. so if all goes well I can get to under 100 by the end of the year :D
That's my goal as well. Do my best to make 2017 the year of the backlog. With the impending birth of my son, my game purchases have halted, so I'll have to pass on all of these LEs, especially when I already have the LE for the PS3.

Can't say it's not tempting. =P

I don't know why I bother reading articles on the FFVII remake. All I wanted from that was better visuals, some bug fixes, maybe some mechanics cleaned up and they have said and shown it's going to be a totally different experience which is nothing like the turn based roots. I gotta let it go man, I just gotta let it go.

I'm trying to view it as: Please don't suck, please don't suck, please don't suck.

I really enjoyed FFXV, but that's new and not toying with a game from my childhood that I love. I still hate what they did with FFVI.

I already have FFVII on PS1, PS4 w/ Trophy support, and on PC if I want to get my nostalgia fix. This new release will be something I can look forward to that will give me more insight in the whole FFVII world. I don't doubt it'll give us the back story that was left out, more Aeris(th), Zack, the Turks, and more Cloud background. I only hope they don't make Cloud to be the emo Cloud from Advent Children and keep him more like the Cloud in the second part of FFVII. I didn't appreciate it when I initially played it as a kid, but I love it now.

Sort of the same. I started selling off massive chunks of my collection and slowed down on purchases. I'm even canceling most of my visa checkout promo pre-orders. Going to be more selective and continue selling for now. I traded in probably 160 games to a local game store to kickstart the process and even started putting valuable collectibles on ebay if I don't think I'll play them again (like Panzer Dragoon Saga)

I crossed some weird threshold where having a giant collection suddenly started stressing me out. I got a priority set up for the backlog of about 100 games and I'm happy with that. The probably 400+ others that were also mixed in there have to go though.

Games are still cool though, and a hobby worth the time/money. It's just the time to play my backlog got so outrageous it just wouldn't ever happen and I decided I didn't want to really be a game collector in so many directions at the same time.

I can respect that. I've never sold my games for any other reason than I needed money for bills, or games I wanted more. I could see how having that many would be for anxiety. I find that sometimes when I look at my collection for the next game to play, I start getting overwhelmed at which one I'll play and will pick games I like less just because I haven't beaten it. Something about leaving them in limbo bothers me.

I think what helped me was finding a specific console to collect for and not try and collect for too many. I in no way will ever be a completionist when it comes to collecting. I leave that to the likes of "the Immortal John Hancock." Check that dude out.

I'm in this boat too. The birth of my daughter slowed down my purchases a bit, but I also took a good hard look at my collection and decided to let go of a number of things, particularly CE's because they got so out of control. Nowadays, it seems like CE's are not only not limited anymore, but they're super expensive and take up a lot of space. And, let's be honest, a number of niche games that get CE's aren't even that good to justify keeping them around (no idea why I held onto Mugen Souls and the like for so long, those games were crap). Freeing up room and getting some extra money in my pocket sure felt nice.

every object you own are just extra weight you carry through life. the less you have, the lighter you'll feel, and happier you'll be... from a minimalistic buddhism perspective.

now from a realist perspective, what's the point of collecting all these boxes? the moment you die, all of it will be trash passed to your family or relative. now the real question is, why are you carrying so much trash through life? learn to live in the moment, enjoy your games, keep the ones you feel very passionate about but learn to let go of the rest.

if you're holding onto them thinking they'll be worth millions one day, look at nes games... are they selling for millions? of course not, don't lie yourself into believing something is more valuable than what it really is.
Truth. There are a few things I'll probably never get rid of, but it's like I got burned once by a scalper and then started hoarding CE's. Immortal John Hancock won't have the dying problem so he can get away with his crazy collection. :p

I had seen his stuff previously Cloyd. He's a really happy, cool dude. I also suggest 'Aerodynamisch'. His story is basically the same as mine where he got a decent job 5 years ago and just started buying everything. He had a similar turning point you can see in his 'Conscious Collecting' and 'Aero's Game Collecting Journey Ends' videos if you're interested.

I'm still pretty hyped for upcoming Idea Factory and PQube games (if those leaked titles from the German retailer end up being true) though, for sure, and might get a CE here and there depending on their size and contents.

I'm in a similar situation. I bought so much this last month I've decided to try to sell off at least a few things (just a few) soon. I like having a large collection but I need to be a little bit more picky with what I end up keeping.

I'm also at the point where I generally try to buy only to play. I usually don't bother with LEs anymore unless they have something amazing (like a huge artbook). I wont be buying pretty much anything (except new Story of Seasons....always loved Harvest Moon games) and it will give me time to go through all my brand new backlog and other older backlog. I think after a point it becomes more stressful having more stuff than not. I know I got to that point on figures, games, some books, comics...etc.... If you're not enjoying it....why bother I say now. Getting rid of a decent amount, and since my sister is running an ebay seller thing, I'm likely just giving her the stuff I don't want. There is not enough time to play everything unless you would play everything for exactly 1 minute, and even then you likely have a few days backlog with that haha.

Also a note but I am having a huge kick from playing various bundle fodder for about 5 minutes. I usually abandon it and well it's one off the backlog somewhat haha.

Do you think we will get a Collector's Edition with Dragon Quest Heroes 2?

I loved the first CE, just wish it would come with a artbook.

Probably not--it's only a bit less than 3 months away and Square-Enix most likely would have announced a CE at the same time as the release date.

You realize that the reasons you have stated are factors because of sales right?
Shareholders won't like games that have low sales. You don't localize a game on a last gen system because sales are too low to be worth it. You don't continue releasing a stable game series because you see a steady decline in sales.

It's very simple. Companies are in business to make a profit. All their revenue is from sales. Thus all their decisions are made in relation to how much sales they will get vs the costs it will take to acquire those sales.
note the underlined parts depend on the company which you don't seem to get. tales of stopped localizations for a time when sales were at their highest. And continued when sales were at their lowest with graces being the return after a 3 year hiatus and it had at its time some of the worst sales in the series (zestiria ps3 and ps4 outdid that with less sales combined)

nintendo localized games in many of its series sporadically despite whether or not they had strong sales and drop series on their whims. Look no further than paper mario a series with strong sales and they stopped supporting it for years at a time.

There is no consistency to whether games can or can't get localized since there are too many moving parts to factor in and share holders whims/companys itself.

If you haven't seen it in another thread already, February's PS+ Games are:

:ps4: Little Big Planet 3

:ps4: Not a Hero

:ps3: Starwhal (Cross-buy with :ps4:)

:ps3: Anna - Extended Edition

:vita: Ninja Senki DX (Cross-buy with :ps4:)

:vita: TorqueL (Cross-buy with :ps4:)

No Japanese games this time around, but Ninja Senki DX would be the closest. LittleBigPlanet 3 isn't bad if you don't already own it I guess. I'm also interested in Not a Hero, but not the rest really.

And of course if you haven't grabbed January's PS+ games, don't forget to as this is the last week they're available.

I have a decent size backlog from multiple generations. It's hard to justfy playing the older games as well, though I do think I will try to get all the games of certain eras. Finances are tight so I cancelled all of my preorders for this year except Horizon Zero Dawn CE, Persona 5 Take Your Heart addition, ME Andromeda Deluxe with the regular price glitch, and Story of Seasons. Now I most likely will hop on sales throughout the year but those are my only day one purchases. I doubt I will ever play all my games, and I suffer from what I like to call the "YouTube Effect." Basically I've been making videos for so long I know look at games to make content for, and less about the enjoyment. I will literally sit down ready to play something and decide not to play anything because the content would not be entertaining and I wouldn't want to play just to play. With that said I still stream League and Overwatch quite a bit if anyone else plays on PC. Gotta do what makes you happy, though if I were in a similar situation I would keep all of those cool editions unless I HAD to get rid of them. Side note, not excited about PS Plus games this month.

Well in the end, I don't know whether or not having additional sales will help the cause, but it certainly wouldn't hurt it... It's probably just another way for someone to show that there is support for the games in the West. I'll be honest here, I didn't even pick it up yet, never really played a Yakuza game before, and didn't even know this was a prequel. I never complained that Yakuza 5 didn't get a physical release (I don't really care for physical copies too much as long as we get the damn game) mainly because I didn't really care about the franchise, but now I am really tempted to pick it up if it's as good as all of you say. Everyone always says its the Japanese GTA, but there's no driving right?

Also, it's a good habit to limit your purchases, especially of big CE items seeing as how expensive housing/space is in some countries/cities. However, I don't really see CEs as a waste of space though. Maybe if it sits on a shelf and it's still sealed. But I feel like artbooks are meant to be read, soundtracks meant to be listened to, and statues to be put up (I hate stickers and lithographs). In that case, the Neptunia CEs never really felt bothersome to keep, since it's just like having a book in your library. In fact, it's probably an easier backlog to go through, just turning the pages of an artbook or listening to a soundtrack. Open your CEs!!!!!

The feels when your Amazon LE comes in one of these packages.  :grouphug:

Damn that's a nice super heavy chipboard box!  Great job XSEED.   Just like a nice anime boxed set, I love these things.  It came in great condition too.

The feels when Saber Bride was exclusive to digital PS4 preorders and XSEED has no plans to put it on the PS Store

You all probably already saw this from the frontpage, not really a great deal but, buy an anime bluray, and get a $10 discount off a select game.

I don't watch a lot of anime, so I'm not really familiar with some of these titles. I'm thinking of either: Ergo Proxy, Prison School, Sky Wizards Academy, or Shimoneta. Anyone have a recommendation?

I find that very surprising.

If I had to pick though, probably Ergo Proxy. I recommend just watching 1 or 2 episodes of any of the animes you have an interest in. The promo ends Feb. 28th, which should give you enough time to decide. The choices to pick for games aren't really that great either...

Why buy any of these games from Amazon? They're all B1g1 half off at Best Buy.

I can recommend Sky Wizards, I enjoyed it. If you do get it, go in expecting an above average harem with the same tried and true tropes.

That Amazon thing is an anti-deal.  All of those games except Berseria and Digimon World were $20 around Christmas.  They'll all be $20 again at some point.

Open your CEs!!!!!
When I master Kuroko's teleporting ability I will.

I find that very surprising.
Yeah that honestly surprised me too when he first told me months ago.

Haruhi is a good choice if you don't want space robots.
But should he watch it by 2006 TV Broadcast Order, Season 1 Chronological Order, or the 2009 TV Broadcast Chronological Order of Season 1 and 2? This is very important.

I actually much prefer those nowadays compared to the bubble mailers.

I mean, they're all shit for boxes, but if I had to choose, the cardboard wrap is still my choice of preference. :D
I agree 100%. If that cardboard mailer is closed and sealed properly, and if the LE box is sitting in the center, your item at least stands a decent chance of a safe arrival. Those bubble mailers cause damage way more than not, at least in my experiences, but as you stated, both are shit, so no arguments there. LOL

Yup, not a great deal, but if I had to choose, Prison School would be my choice. It's really enjoyable, one of the better comedy animes, and very nice fanservice. It's great, but I'm hoping the price goes down before I pick that up. Ergo Proxy had promise after the first few eps, but went downhill later. I can't speak for the others you listed.

Out of that list, hands down I'd either go with Code Geass or Haruhi Suzumiya. Though Trigun wouldn't be a bad choice either.

Shimoneta is great. Anna is great.

Snow White with Red Hair is also good.

I still vividly remember watching the 2nd season and thinking "Wtf are they doing...."

Wait... you watched The Endless Eight without knowing the context?
Still garbage nonetheless. I heard about it when airing and every week i was like oh yeah time to see this stupid episode again. I am not a Haruhi fan myself. Anime was too hard to watch at times and felt way overrated. Oh that last Shimoneta was very entertaining and I hope we get a second season someday.

Funny you guys mention that. I'm actually in the middle of watching Haruhi right now.   So far I'm rather unimpressed and there's only about eight episodes left.  The Endless Eight was painful to get through.   I'm having a lot of difficulty in seeing how this anime is not terribly overrated at this point.

I felt Haruhi was extremely overrated at the time when it was all the rage and super popular.  To each their own though.  I think it was more because there was just a lack of shows at the time since anime was way less popular.  So watching it now would be even more lackluster since there are a lot more anime out now and certain standards are set.

WTF are you guys on about? Haruhi literally kicked off the whole light novel genre. You can call it overrated all you want, but it's the reason all the light novels and their anime counterparts are as popular as they are now.

And S1 is still great. S2 ruined everything, especially since it was already waning after 6 years of extreme popularity.

And in its defense, the anime needed you to know some of the back story to fully enjoy. At the time, most people did, because it was just that popular. Otherwise, a ton of subtlety flew over the viewer's head. To appreciate it now, you sort of have to watch it twice. Or read the light novel(s) first.

haruhi was ok, i enjoyed it more watching it in order rather than the mixed up aired date schedule.

it's also a genre not most anime lovers enjoy.

ya, season 2 was shit. skip it.

I heard the movie makes up for season 2, but i never watched it cause... fuck season 2.

I wouldn't recommend it unless someone loves older animation, & slice of life with bizarre twist.
