Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Not wanting to be that guy but, could y'all take your P5 discussion in a separate thread? Kinda just looking for JP news and sales here :whistle2:$
There is a Backloggers Anonymous thread, and our game of the month for April is Persona 5. Everyone is pretty much playing the same game there. So that works!

https://www.cheapassgamer.com/topic/355975-cag-niche-backloggers-anonymous-persona-5-april/

But one can argue that there have been other "discussions" of similar nature, not to mention the Fire Emblem Heroes one... And Persona 5 is only the most highly anticipated game that this thread has been talking about for years... And a huge thanks to Supplice and Draekon for giving us the news regularly, so no disruptions on that front. There haven't been too many deals, and if anything pops up on Lightning deals I'll post it. And it's also Persona, as in half of us have it in our Avatars or Signatures, and this thread's foundation was probably built on it, and most of us live, eat, and sleep Persona (maybe not that last one...) But use the Backloggers Anonymous thread too!

On another note... does P5 seem kind of dark compared to the other games?

There is rape, murder, suicide, drug use, and a shit ton of profanity...

Yes the tone is quite heavy. It's wonderful. It brings the first teaser back to mind where it was it was a bunch of chairs with chains that said "you are a slave. Want emancipation?"
I am feeling the oppression

Not like the previous games weren't dark what with
murder in 4 and coming to grips with mortality in 3
And you should check out the apocalyptic wastelands of the SMT games. Dark and atlus go hand in hand.

Igor's voice got me a bit haha. I kind of liked his high pitched voice from before. I'm more used to it now though after seeing him a few times. I like Morgana's English voice honestly, though i'm sure the voice is better in Japanese. The rest seem pretty decent for the most part. I think people just haven't played horrendous dubs like Chaos Wars or what I remember of Steambot Chronicles. It's not perfect of course, but it's not terrible either.
Its so sad that his va passed away. I will miss him.

If you think people are going to cut the Persona chat out of this thread boy are you barking up the wrong tree.

Unfortunately. Though the bulk of it really should be moved to a thread in the PS4 section, but it would never eliminate it entirely. Just like how there's a Fire Emblem Heroes thread in the mobile section but people post here anyways.

Regardless, those that only want to look for deals/news in this thread should use the "Link Posts Only" link at the top of the thread to try and help find deals and news. All deals should really have links to products and news should really have source links.

You guys are all more than welcome to post in the GGT about anything and everything you want.

It's basically a free thread since its so dead.

I would definitely use those threads if other people used them. But they don't.

The three biggest threads for non-deals/gaming/random stuff conversations are all on the General Gaming & News forum.

Just highlight the forums button, and the drop down menu on the right next to "Video Game Deals" show "General Gaming & News."

The usual top three threads are:

Indignate's GGT Thread (300 replies,There were 360 other threads, so I guess it adds up to 180,000 lifetime posts or so) [You can talk about anything here... literally anything. There are a surprising amount of Kpop videos and Love Live gifs though...]

Corgstradamus' CAG Backlog Support Group (1200 replies) [Any games that are on your backlog, not just niche ones. Mostly used as a journal of sorts for people to chronicle their progress, and discussions happen often as well.]

BlackRockWaifu's CAG Niche Backloggers Anonymous (Persona 5 April) (500 replies) [Everyone votes on a game for the month in which we all play if we have an interest in it, and engage in discussions. For niche games mostly, although we want to expand further, and there is also talk about other games if you don't get to playing what we choose. I also throw in activities from time to time like homework or suggestions.]

Also a little shout out to the other threads there with a little less movement, like the RPG Thread, and the Completed Games Thread.

So there is definitely a lot of activity there, especially with everyone on the same page and playing the same game. Shameless plug in here, but we have a wall of fame, player reviews, and I'm thinking of adding a chart to see how far people get in P5 for the Backloggers thread. So check them out once in a while. And I've been noticing that Draco, Sirpikaz, and Gershomcz keep their discussions in that thread too, so another little shout out to them for being good samaritans.

Kpop is never surprising.

It's exactly what you want it to be every time.

Also the GGT got rebooted at some point after the  ∞ thread.

We have very deep lore but are newcomer friendly with every installment.

XSeed's "The Legend of Heroes: Trails Series - Localization Blog #2"

The blog post talks about continuity details their OCD between the games in the series and how they're retroactively noticing things and changing them to keep them consistent across all titles. The only other thing that really sticks out is this phrase:

"Trails in the Sky the 3rd is coming to PC in English on…a date you’ll find out very, very soon."

They will be hitting their Spring 2017 target, which is within the next two months roughly. To those who are actually going to play it, look forward to the mini-game art. They are masterpieces that words cannot begin to describe. You see one at the bottom of the blog post.

Those of you that procrastinated, the God Wars LE is now sold out on the NISA website for both Vita and PS4.  Over two months before it is supposed to come out.  Granted there is always a chance it may be come back in stock, and likely will, to limited quantities.

Birthdays the Beginning LE is also sold out but you can order that at Best Buy and Amazon currently.

Disgaea 5 Complete Edition LE is at 11-25% stock left so will likely sell out in a few weeks.

Danganronpa Volume 3: Killing Harmony LE (Vita and PS4) are at 11-25% stock left.

Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls LE (PS4) is also at 11-25% left.

A Rose in the Twilight LE (Vita) is at 0-5% left, so order that soon!!

Operation Babel: New Tokyo Legacy LE (Vita) is also at 0-5% left so order that soon too!!

Cladun Returns: This is Sengoku! LE (PS4) is at 11-25% stock left.

The Silver Case LE (PS4) is at 11-25% stock left.

The Touhou Genso Wanderer LE (PS4) is still at 0-5% left (seems like its been at that for a while).  I also believe you can still order this from Amazon and Gamestop.

Every other LE preorder not mentioned above should still have plenty of stock left (unless I missed one).

My P5 Impressions after 8 hours and the 1st dungeon done.

Quite impressed with the game, even though at times those 8 hours felt slow. I am having an extremely hard time figuring out an optimal strategy, but that's for a second playthrough. The difficulty is both here and there on Normal. I know it took me 4 days in total to get through the dungeon and i missed a lock picked chest or so. Persona gathering seems a lot easier, so you don't have to heavily rely on fusion (though i'm sure it will come into play later....i'm just trying to keep a Persona of the social links i'm doing at the minimum, plus I love running all the elements). Social links seem to start fast and go slower (similar to P4 and P3). The atmosphere of the whole place is really good and easy to get lost in sometimes. I love Morgana so far....so adorable and a pretty fun character. Exactly the opposite reaction of when I first met Teddie. I think the characters seem to be pretty cool as well, and they are slowly made available to you. I'm still learning stuff and can't wait for my next area to clear. This feels like a Persona game and I'm sure will be long and have multiple facets to it. I haven't been spoiled at least!

I'm happy for almost any discussion (except maybe the weird catfights from time to time, but I guess they have their own charm :p) and for the thread to be lively. I skip most of the Overwatch and FE:H stuff when it pops up. It's not too difficult to see a post that starts 'My P5 impressions' and scroll to the next post, repeat if you're not interested.

BRW is the saviour with the deals tho.

However, that one time I started talking about mortgages and escrow accounts with someone was admittedly probably too off topic

Fusing is better for sure because you can inherit skills as well as gain bonus experience that will bump them up a few levels. I pretty much never use wild caught ones. I've heard that you can capture a demon and delete it right away if your capacity is full, then still have it appear to be summonable in the Velvet Room. Though I heard someone try it in the NA version with no success, so I'm hesitant to try it and just overwrite whatever I believe to be my weakest link.

As for difficulty, it's not particularly hard. However because it's part of Megaten, you will get bullshit deaths. I think two of mine so far are when I cast Garu with the MC and it reflected. Then immediately after, the enemy used an extremely strong attack and finished him off. The other one was where the MC got hit by a dangerous enemy 3 times with rampage (or something along those lines) from full health and instantly died.

I think the first dungeon took me 3 actual delves to finish. The second one also took me 3 as well. Got all the treasures in them, but I save that for the last delve which makes it a bit harder since enemies have an aggro range the size a football field and can respawn very quickly. I should probably not do that with the third dungeon. I do have to say though that dungeons really take a ton more time than past games where you could mostly breeze through in a single day. Now that's impossible.

Pretty sure I did cause the game to bug out once though. I was doing stealth jumps to get to an enemy quickly and somehow I overshot the enemy instead of ambushing them. When that happened the enemy just straight up despawned...

I'm sure i'll be fusing plenty afterwards. I gathered up all the persona from the first dungeon so I'm sure from the future on i'm mainly using fused guys and keeping low level guys for confidants.

Fusing personas and getting inheritance is the best mechanic of the entire series.  These games start to become a lot of fun when you get half of your social links up to lvl 5 or so and everything you fuse levels up and learns some of their new abilities right on the spot.  The thing I've always struggled with the most in previous games is running out of room on the persona list.  I wish there were a few extra spaces, especially once you get later into the game and you're trying to keep several personas in order to cover every weakness.

Don't ever call them catfights again.

You're going to ruin that word for me forever. :*(

I would say they're more like squabbles. ;D

Oh shit, Cold Steel I & II are coming to PC too with 5,000 additional voiced dialogue lines (Many of which are Rean). Plus hopefully being able to play the game with no slowdown (60FPS!) and fast load times? Very nice. Well, so long as it ends up better than Little Kings Story did. No backporting the new voices to PS3/Vita though.

Price for Trails in the Sky the 3rd will be $30 with a 10% discount for the first week. It's launching on Steam, GOG & Humble Store.

Having played mostly SMT and not Persona, a lot of these mechanics you guys are talking about are normal in SMT.

I thought I was going to be done with Nier yesterday, but I'm not. ABC and KGT done. Hopefully I'll finish up D and E today.

Since Persona is a spinoff from the main Megaten series, it doesn't surprise me. Though they completely brought back demon negotiation that was missing from Persona 3 & 4 as well as the ability to use guns as a secondary weapon. However I don't remember Nuclear or Psi elements from past Megaten games at all. Are those new with Persona 5?

My mind might be fuzzy on what I can remember of old games though.

Those two types were in Past Persona titles I think 1st 2 Titles

He's trying to take your thunder.

Made it through the first dungeon. Man it was brutal I had to leave and come back quite a few times compared to p3 and p4 where I did dungeons in 2 days or less. I'm sure the difficulty will ease up a bit after I grow in power though. (And SP. My oh so precious sp)
Yeah I had to go there like 4 times of my own accord (not including the forced trips). Tough, beat the boss on the first try just because I use the free healing items dlc lol. I'm done for from here on!

I'm so stoked for Cold Steel on PC
I'm excited as well. I've platinumed both releases on Vita, as well as Trails in the Sky FC. I'm about 1/5th of the way through SC and would love to add these to my library. Anything to support Falcom and get more game brought to us.

EDIT: Added a bunch of links.

This makes me so happy that it comes out on my birthday.

Will have to buy a steam card just for that and Finish part 2 someday and play this. Nice we get the whole series.

Wonder if we will get the crossover series with Ys.

The game really needed voiced Rean originally though.

That is a little awkward, but I just figured they meant for the main character to have your voice or be your mouthpiece for the journey. Of course, it's odd in a time where all of the main cast, and half of the NPCs are voices.

Not every game has to have a female lead. And vice versa.
Yeah I really don't get that, especially if it would feel out of place for the game. They should have just came out and straight up said "We wanted our story to be told with a male lead" instead of pussyfooting around it. The whole "A character moving from a big city to a small town" is the dumbest excuse ever.

More like when they put in a female lead they actually put in the work to make the game feel different for a female lead instead of just making the male mc female. Hence all that additional work is not worth the effort.

Also willingness of sending out of sons and keeping daughters at home is a real thing. people are much more concerned about their daughters safety than their sons safety.
