Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

I think its like that so you can save in between days in case you want to stop playing or something. I think P4 had long cutscenes/events that took multiple days and didn't let you save in between.
A clear limitation of being designed for ps3. PS4 can simply go into rest mode if player really can't wait until the next day to save

btw where the heck is that girl. I never got a chance to advance her rank to 10 after she quits being a maid
It takes a lot of time. For me I maxed that confidant [customspoiler='during'] summer [/customspoiler] and they didn't re-appear until [customspoiler='a bit after'] the new school term began[/customspoiler]. I think they left a phone message when they became available again though.

Well all the time adds up. I'd estimate it to be around 1-1.5 hours over the course of the full game, which is rather ridiculous. It makes me feel like the game isn't respecting my time by having to repeat the same thing over and over when all I can do is more or less one outcome.

I'd rather have just as a "Do you want to save?" prompt instead if that is the case.

However I have come to the conclusion from all this that the main character furiously masturbates at least 8 hours a day when he doesn't go to school.
Some of us did live that life...back when Playboy(or Hustler if you were lucky) was your only source of spank material.

Thank you. Exactly the reason I was gonna post. Wow, I think you might be my new favorite person here.

Also, it lets you talk to Sojiro, lets you check the television broadcast, and whatever stat/equipment you have and what to change. I've only seen this limiting night time thing after story segments and dungeon time, so it's there for a reason. If they were there after every single night event and time spent with Confidants at night, then that would be a huge problem. So they really did think about it.

That is one of the reasons I guess. Another is if you make a mistake (school/confidant answer), you can just load up a save from the previous night's save point and not fight through an entire dungeon or watch a 5 minute story segment to get back to that point.

Also helps having multiple save points in case of crashes and having to restart all that progress.

While we're on the topic of Persona 5 though, I just want to voice one major complaint I had about it. WHY DO YOU NOT FORCE ME TO JUST AUTOMATICALLY GO TO BED WHEN I CAN'T DO SHIT AT NIGHT AND WHY DOES MORGANA HAVE TO BE THE BITCH TO TELL ME I CAN'T DO SHIT? WHY NOT INNER MONOLOGUE AT THE VERY LEAST SO I DON'T FEEL LIKE THE MC IS A TOOL? MY PLANT CAN WAIT A GOD DAMNED DAY OR TWO OR PROGRAM IT TO WHERE I ONLY GET THAT WHEN MY PLANT NEEDS FERTILIZER. HELL JUST HAVE A POPUP WHEN THE PLANT NEEDS FERTILIZER ASKING ME IF I WANT TO FERTILIZE IT. /Therapeutic rant

At least you're not Teddy.

No, it doesn't. Morgana prevents you from going downstairs.

lets you check the television broadcast
I'm not sure if actually does. Whenever I checked the TV, Morgana would always say to get your ass in bed. I don't recall Sundays, but if it allowed it then it could be an programmed exception much like when your plant needs fertilizer.

and whatever stat/equipment you have and what to change.
Ehhhhhh? That's kinda reaching since it's pretty pointless to be able to do that only for that. You can do the same thing any other time you have control.

I've only seen this limiting night time thing after story segments and dungeon time, so it's there for a reason. If they were there after every single night event and time spent with Confidants at night, then that would be a huge problem. So they really did think about it.
There's no story reason for it. It serves virtually no purpose outside of possibly saving, fertilizing your plant and maybe (if it lets you) use the Sunday television. I guess you could possibly use the laptop shop as well if you've repaired it, but that's not a time limited thing unless you took forever to repair it. I never tested it during that time because you had a ton of time, so I can't say if Morgana is a dick with that too. However Morgana always told me to go to bed when I inspected the workbench so I stopped doing that a long time before I fixed the laptop. That and I couldn't really use the laptop when goods were being delivered.

It happens significantly more than you're thinking because there are a lot of story segments where it happens. It's frustrating to see it when you can pretty much do nothing during it. Besides exceptions can be programmed in.

Some of us did live that life...back when Playboy(or Hustler if you were lucky) was your only source of spank material.
I do remember the pre-internet era.

Like I said, at least it's not Teddy. Still not the perfect mascot character though.

Not all those times that it sticks you in the attic.

And posting here is confusing the hell out of me. I never said anything about progressing faster. I only said they should have made more logical sense of time progression, and designed the activities and stats to that.

It's like 2 people probably know what I'm getting at (and possibly agree), and literally no one else does.

Edit:

It does let you sometimes, even on days other than Sunday. Other times, it tells you to FO and go to bed. It's another part of the illusion, cause you can't even predict when you can check the TV in your room before bed.

Edit 2: Last thing about the palaces. I get that they want you to do things at your own pace. But there are fixed days for events after you finish the palace. They could have made the calling card days fixed to a small window so they could make the events more consistent. A month of your team worrying about something cause of sleeping beauty is just not that believable. It's a lazy design choice at best.

P.S. I'm only singling out the sleepyhead because it's the easiest example to describe.

Just wanted to say that I'm fine with all the Persona 5 complaints, and not trying to put down anyone or start anything here. Everyone has a right to say what they feel and discussion is always appreciated in this thread, I think. A lot of you make very good points, especially Draekon, I just wanted to compliment these points with counter arguments of my own. Sorry if anything I post winds up being offensive as that is the last thing I want to happen. I'm also very impressed with the arguments made, it's approaching Socrates and Plato here.

WHY DOES MORGANA HAVE TO BE THE BITCH TO TELL ME I CAN'T DO SHIT? WHY NOT INNER MONOLOGUE AT THE VERY LEAST SO I DON'T FEEL LIKE THE MC IS A TOOL?
Honestly, I don't really have a good reason for this one. I'm gonna say that generally, having the voice of Morgana there to ask if you want to spend time with "so and so" and to go to sleep probably helps gives a meaningful voice to the protag. It sounds a little weird if he were to debate with himself about some decisions. But I also think it's there for casual fans, as Morgana is kind of a narrator/interpreter between the protag and the player. I don't mind it too much though, a lot of the time I forget Morgana is actually there.

And I don't know if the protag jerks off 8 hours a day when he's off from school. Maybe 1 or 2 hours... but 8? In all seriousness, I guess he does his homework/laundry/cleaning/phones his parents on Saturday, and maybe prays on Sunday. Maybe he binges Netflix during the mornings in summer break, or just sleeps super late since it's summer vacation. This one's not a gameplay flaw, more like a logic one, so I wouldn't think too much into it, especially when there's a bunch of other logic defying stuff like magic and long-nosed men.

Sorry, I think I confused the attic only segments with the after dungeon cafe ones. I think the entire-cafe ones work well. I guess the attic only ones really do only serve the save function then. If I had to come up with even the slightest reason, I'd say it's to keep continuity than to put a save prompt, but I guess that's pushing it.

Does it really happen that often though? Well, I guess since you've beaten the game, you've probably experienced it far more times than me, and is sick of it. Whether it's a design flaw, or I'm too dumb to understand the reason, I'll admit that you're right and made a sound argument.

It's like 2 people probably know what I'm getting at (and possibly agree), and literally no one else does.
I get it. It's why I like the Trails series so much. It does a damn good job creating a world and abides by the rules of that world. So you're not really left with "What's going on with all this unused time?" among other things. Unfortunately it does have a few moments where the game goes "It's magic. I ain't gotta explain shit.", but those are so minor in the overall picture that they don't matter much. I'm not sure there are any larger games that don't at least have some bit of that unfortunately though.

I just don't interject much because if I really got into it, I'd probably write something nobody would read because it'd be at least the size of my longer game reviews/thoughts.

I sat on so much dirty laundry from early dungeon runs that I never bothered getting cleaned because they wouldn't sell for much that it was pretty disgusting. One can guess what he does during all that extra time, but it doesn't really matter because the game never really even hints at what might be going on.

Also, Witcher 3 was my favorite game of that year, despite it's lackluster combat. Infinite Space is my second favorite game in the DS era, despite the combat turning a lot of people away from the 999 / Dangan Ronpa quality story.

What I'm trying to say is, just because there are flaws in a game, doesn't make it a bad game. But they can stick out like a sore thumb to some people.

I didn't come from Persona 3 and 4. I played P1 and SMT. So all these "you should expect blah blah from 3 and 4" also make 0 sense to me.

If it is properly balanced then it would be an indication of not being flawed. Being able to do everything is a sign of that is properly balanced.

How does your suggestions improve the system? You're asking for faster progression, but the game is already balanced for proper progression. If there is more progression of stats on break days then the game will be rebalanced to make progression take longer which leaves a net effect of things taking the same amount of time to level up stats, or more likely gating higher stat level even later towards the end of the game.
being able to do everything doesn't mean its properly balanced. You can beat elizabeth and the other super bosses in the games as an example.

I can guarantee more people don't get max social links than do. If it was easy enough to do there wouldn't be the need for guides nor people complaining about it.

I just want to say while not getting real into it because it'd turn into a long lengthy list of things I think Persona 5 could do a lot better because it would probably turn half the thread into a witch hunt against me, that I really don't understand the viewpoint of the counter-criticism here. However I have come to the conclusion from all this that the main character furiously masturbates at least 8 hours a day when he doesn't go to school. They should have included a sixth social stat, [customspoiler='Stamina']
its-magic-i-aint-gotta-explain-shit2.jpg

[/customspoiler], that goes up automatically by one note after every non-school day. The end level system for that would allow time after a trip to the dungeon instead of delegating that to a confidant. Early game dungeons require less than latter dungeons, for effect. Obviously it wouldn't mean a thing since it's an automatic gain only stat. At least it would explain things in the game world.

haha xD good read must eat out at lunch considering you rarely eat with your friends from school or spend time with them.

Only if you plan things out and or follow a guide. If the games anything like 4 there will be missable timed books.
Well yes ofc you have to plan things out. It defeats the whole purpose of a time management system if you don't need to do that.
But look at what we're saying here. You definitely don't need a guide to get max confidants in p5. People are saying you can read every book, play every game, watch every DVD, unlock every hangout spot in addition to getting max confidants in a single playthrough. Now a guide might be needed to go to that level of completion, but certainly getting max confidants should be easy in comparison
My bar for a completionist run is just getting max confidants, so in that respect p5 is very lenient in that regard.

Just max Temperance and Fortune if you want more control over your time and outcomes. A lot of the confidants already outright break the memento/palace portion of the game when you progress them. The only time I actually feel like time is wasted is having to go back to the palace after securing a route to the treasure. The bosses are rarely hard enough to warrant a full day's rest. Especially since you can just buy the 50 and 100 percent party heals from Takemi right at the start of her confidant.

It might be worth it because getting to hear this on your treasure/boss run of the palace always makes it feel infinitely cooler.

I agree that that song makes the boss run worth it. I also like to use it to grind for cash early on in the game.

Im hoping the English subbed version of Summer Lesson for PSVR gets restocked on play asia. I was a doo doo head and waited too long and should have pre-ordered it, and its sold out for now. Hoping it gets a restock and isn't a limited print run.

I 9001% feel that pain. My thought process was 'Surely they won't sell out of this extremely niche title before it hits release', I was sorely mistaken. :(

I didn't wanna sink too much money into PA as I wasn't familiar (I.E. general mistrust for 3P Asian companies considering the cluster fuck that is 3P Amazon sellers/scammers) with them until recently, Got a very positive impression with Parappa/Blue Rider.

Parappa had a re-stock right before release. I'm hoping for the same for SL. Fingers crossed, friends.

So 103 hours into Persona 5 and I barely beat the final Palace, but I'm still not done. This game never ends lol.

I really regret not maxing out the Temperance confidant though, mine got stuck at 9 since I waited too long and now I'm not in school so I can't continue it

Anyways, I really like this game. I can't remember the last time I spent so many hours in just one game

You still might be able to. I think there are some extra afternoons and evenings available after that point, but they're pretty sparse. If you are where I think you are anyways. Though if you're at the part with a heal point at the start, then, yeah, all free days are done.

Has anyone imported and tried or seen any info about Utawarerumono's Vita version vs the PS4 version? I'm trying to decide which to get. Saving some money would be nice, and I do like handhelds. But I dislike having to manage any digital content (like 5 billion free DLC items on PSN) and finding space for big patches on the Vita. If it runs at like 15 FPS that's also a downside. :p But if it runs well, it's also cheaper and a slightly preferred way to play.

The graphics look relatively simple....so I don't think the Vita will be a problem....I remember seeing PS4 footage and Vita footage and I think they ran similarly.

I'm also disappointed to learn that Dragon Quest Heroes 2's co-op is the same as Nioh's co-op where everybody not the host needs to have beaten the level. Why developers, why do you do this.
That is a bummer. I'm waiting until week 2 or 3 to buy DQH2 since I feel it's destined to have the $20 drop quickly.

I think the dungeon maps don't have that requirement, just the story levels. Though I'm not entirely sure how to acquire dungeon maps, but I guess it just takes time before you start acquiring them. It also seems that the enemy levels in co-op are determined by the average level of everybody.

Yep, that's where I'm at. I'm beyond saving....

And the keychains are only for pre order versions?

I want the game but wanted to wait til after I got my Switch.

I saw someone playing a demo at a party I was at and it looked really cool.
