Humble Bundle Thread

The Sexy Brutale and Nex Machina are great. You're welcome for my sacrifices.

In early for Quantum Break and The Long Dark.

Well not terrible but not super great. I will be honest though, The Sexy Brutale was on my wishlist so it was $8 ~ 12 that would have been spent either way. At least in this case I get BlazBlue out of the deal. The Jan unlocks are perhaps the best early unlocks the monthly has had regardless of personal likes/dislikes and the perfect kicker to get people to subscribe for the holiday season. Figure I'll give DoW III a try and maybe QB some time later as I always wanted it on X1 but was not going to sped $60 on a TV show.

I've found the Monthly works out way better since I put my whole Gotta Catch Them All! Steam game campaign on hold about a year ago. I've also avoided buying anything on Steam other than DLC and low-priced indie stuff. As a result:

- No repeats

- A couple are on my wishlist

- A couple I hate

Meh, the bundle is alright, but I doubt I'd fork over $12 if someone showed me the games first.

Yes, b/c it's fantastic as a very linear Max Payne 1+2 style shooter w/ time power mechanics and the TV-style episodes are excellent HBO-style TV.

Thank God this wasn't another open-world UbiSoft style game and/or MP-style Level-based competitive game, since that is what it seems like most AAA companies now want to develop.
I can appreciate your perspective. I also think that Doom 2016, Quantum Break and some others show that there is a market for single player games that are developed for single player experience and do not include a season pass.

I do like open-world Ubi style such as Far Cry and will even admit that some of the season passes are worth it. I think that most companies are looking at a base game and a season pass is the best way to make money on these type of games at the moment, especially for single player games. Notice how many games are being released with like 3 SKUs - base, deluxe and gold (season pass included). Being a CAG, I am inclined to wait until 1) GOTY/complete version is release and 2)wait to see what others are saying about the Season pass or DLC.

I can almost guarantee the tradition in Borderlands that the DLC/Season pass will be required in order to obtain higher levels will be in Borderlands 3.

Next month is great. I hope you guys are ready to apologize to IGN.

Also, I find the attitudes kind of funny. Sexy Brutale was in a $10 tier on an otherwise crappy bundle on Fanatical and it was generally praised, but included as an unlock on Humble and people are mostly "meh" about it I think the unlocks were pretty decent. Nothing mind blowing, but a lot of games I wanted to buy eventually.
Sorry, no, I do not believe in apologizing to IGN. I feel (and I do not believe that I am alone) that IGN wanted to have Humble Bundle sign people up en masse for the annual sub for the monthly as it was announced very shortly after the initial "Hey let us give you a $10 incentive" that IGN acquired Humble Bundle. I also resent that just recently, Humble upped the incentive to sub annually to $20 as it feels like a slap in the face to those that signed up prior. Why not credit the people that signed up with another $10 as a retention bonus per se?

Re: Sexy Brutale- I understand what you are saying. I was excited to see both Sexy Brutale and Dex (a game that MysterD reviewed and liked) was in a Nemesis bundle. What I did not like was seeing a third / $10 tier. I almost bit as I think both games are worthwhile. My problem as of late is pulling the trigger on the top tier from bundle sites. Generally, I think that most games in a top tier will come around again in a BTA or mid tier. For what it is worth, I think that the mid tier of the Nemesis bundle has some decent titles.

I think that a lot of us intially think "Wow I cool title that I have seen on Steam and would not mind buying (or getting bundled) and now it is in a bundle" and when Sexy Brutale is now bundled twice in a short time frame, I think it losses some of it luster of fear of missing out type mentality to where people are now like "what other bundle will it be in".

How do we go from H1Z1 as the early unlock to 3 solid games shown? Is there no middle ground? IMO Quantum Break or Dawn of War III by themselves are at least on par with H1Z1 as an early unlock.

As far as the H1Z1 unlocks. I don't think I would have regretted passing completely on that month and almost did. They aren't terrible though. Couple things off my wishlist.
Agreed as I would love to have more consistency and also about Quantum Break or DOW3 being at least as good as H1Z1. I was not thrilled with November headliners or December's H1Z1 headlining. November unlocks with Shadow Tactics was the saving point.

Now for January, we have 3 unlocks that are rated at least mixed review wise (DOW 3) to very positive with Long Dark and Quantum Break. That is about $115 MSRP already. I would like to still have some decent unlocks with that.

I do wonder if enough people complained to IGN and Humble that they decided to do better for January than December's monthly. H1Z1 may still appeal to some, but has mixed reviews and Steam had it on sale for $5 recently - not a mark of a headliner.

--

To be honest, I was pleasantly surprised to see Quantum Break bundled. It gives me hope that Microsoft may put out a weekly i.e Ori and State of Decay which would be great.

I am at a point that unless it is a game that I think that will never be bundled ie. Witcher 3, I will generally wait until bundle. I will tip my hat to Blade and others that have amassed thousands more than I have and also to those like Syntax and Fox that have started fakeybroing with zGold as I can appreciate not buying cheap bundles, but saving up for AAA releases.

I hope everyone enjoys their weekend and upcoming holidays.

Cheers

Doom 2016 was awesome. Though, they did have a Season Pass - even though it was MP-based. I really wish there was more single-player campaign content for that game; I'd love to have seen a single-player expansion for that one.

I loved QB - it felt like the close-to-perfect marriage of a Max Payne 1+2 linear style shooter and a HBO-style TV series.

Yes, I do like open-world games in the Ubi-style - but w/ many Ubi-games like Far Cry series, especially the over-worked AC series, Watch Dogs series, and now many other non-Ubi games copying their formula - they no longer feel that special anymore. In the earlier days - when Boiling Point, STALKER, and those games came out - it felt like a big deal to have a open-world single-player shooter. Now, the experience is...getting a bit stale and over-saturated, as everybody's doing them.

About Borderlands - yeah, we know there'll be Base-Game, Season Pass, Re-Released Complete Edition. It's par for the course w/ them. Though, it wouldn't surprise me if Gearbox also puts in some MTX's and LB's thrown in for good measure, too.

The problem I see w/ many games is this: companies, especially in AAA arena, are looking to find a way to get repeat customers. To them: Base-Games, DLC's, Expansions, and Re-Releases can be mostly only one sale per person. Some gamers might buy things piece-meal (Game, Expansions/DLC's, Season Pass, etc) if they buy early - but some might, like yourself, wait for a Complete Edition later. MTX's and LB's are multiple sales for the same type of thing per player, if they can convince players to take them on and get them addicted.

EDIT:

About Dex - that's one great Indie game. This cyberpunk setting game mixed with elements of shooter, beat 'em up, action game, stealth game, and RPG was surprisingly great. To mix all of these elements, make them all work, and turn out something this great doing so many things - yeah, they did a hell of a job on this one.

It feels like, of late, I've been on a roll w/ picking out great games to play and review - Quantum Break, Dex, and now Prey 2017 looks to also be shaping up to be right up there.

Well, thanks to warreni and some other dude who bought Quantum Derp I got Long Dark(Derp) and (what I'm sure will be) five other (crappy) games for $5.  But, then again, my bad luck in unlocks is your good fortune as I sprinkle the keys in my Steam activity feed.

They ran out of digital ink -- can't print anymore!

This daily Yogscast is genius as it gets new exposure every day and people commenting on it.  I do not care how pretty the little packages are, history has shown that this bundle is only worth it to those that are just getting into PC gaming or have just started with bundles.  I am also one that cannot just say "it is for charity" to plunk down $35 as honestly, just donate to your favorite cause on your own terms.  For instance, if you wanted, CAG is doing a charity raffle to help Puerto Rico.  You could also just buy your local police or fire department some snacks.

I'm trying to remember... Is this bundle historical front or bake loaded?
Last year was front loaded. First day was Kholat, Guilty Gear XX, Bit.Trip Runner 2, Psychonauts and Back to Bed (plus TF2 badges) and the other days were 1-2 games each which were often rebundled titles or F2P stuff. I mean, Day One wasn't great but you got a small pile of stuff and the Guilty Gear game hadn't been bundled yet. It nosedived from there.

Pretty much. It's just marketing for Yogscast.

Don't know if I want to spend 35 bucks on Yogscast's bundle as I usually don't bother to watch their Twitch streams....I just use Twitch for watching Rifftrax nowadays

I don't even understand the point of Twitch and only log in when I get notice of new Prime loot. I get it is a streaming service so... I ... can... watch people play games..........? No thanks I'll play the game myself without some yahoo overacting every 5 seconds. That South Park episode summed it up pretty well.

Day 3 for Jingle Jam I predict coal.

I've only ever watched?/used it when they stream the Joy of Painting.

While all the 100% to charity bundles are generally lackluster game wise this one seems especially shitty. Tried watching the stream on Twitch and it held my interest for all of about 5 minutes. Think I would rather just slide the charity slider to 100% on a few regular bundles if I didn't do that already most of the time.

Today's Yogscast bundle stuff is:

ReThink, which is actually something new game-wise

Teslagrad, which definitely is not and...

Some Guardians of Ember DLC to meet the "Here's DLC for a game we're not giving you" requirement.

Last edited by a moderator:
Best part is, it is not even DLC, it is a voucher to redeem in game and has an expiration date. Love it. Teslagrad is not too bad, but like Gunpoint, unless you are new gaming in general you will most likely already have the game. It is also part of Trove if you have a monthly sub.

I will be honest with you all here. I have received far more enjoyment out of this bundle by complaining about it online than I think I would if I had actually bought it.

The intro to Dawn of War III is really good. That is as far as I have got playing it so far.

DoW3 is a case of "if it wasn't a DoW game, it would've been good", but it also wouldn't have that price tag. I played it on the free beta before launch and liked it. It need to be cheaper, 50% cheaper at least to be worth it. I'm glad I can grab it cheaper now

So whole yogscast was leaked

Where did that come from? Not that I am doubting this but just curious. Also I would like to add no hyperbole here but this is worse than I could have possibly imagined. Seriously. Even last year's was better than this especially considering a number of items listed were in last year's bundle. Now I don't even have to wonder if maybe I would want to plunk down the $35 and will enjoy the three months of Humble Monthly I had been renewed for.

Edit add:

Sure sure this is for charity and all of that I get it but at the same time there are certain expectations that should be met if they expect to hook folks in. I don't remember if it was here or reddit that summed it up as buying tickets for a charity ball and arriving to PB&J, punch, and a stereo in the corner or something like that. That is this bundle the PB&J and punch of charity bundles.

Pretty sad when the only thing appealing in a game bundle is the one that's just beta access.

This compared to just the early unlocks of the current monthly is crazy, why would you ever buy this?!
