Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Blue Reflection is still $20 at Gamestop and has an $80 DLC pass. The price on Atelier Sophie is okay. It's $29.99 used at Gamestop but $35 new at Amazon

From what I've heard, it's actually good good. People I know have told me it's arguably the best DRPG outside of the Etrian Odyssey games.
I felt like 7th Dragon was better than Etrian Odyssey. I couldn’t put the game down and ended up putting like 60 hours in it to do everything. The combat was fun, story was good, music was fantastic, and the classes were really cool. It had some really tough bosses in the game too.

That's good to hear. I bought the game on a Black Friday sale from BB a couple years ago but haven't gotten to it yet. I've had a hard time getting into the EO games but I've really enjoyed Demon Gaze so far as far as DRPGs go.

I’ve never played Demon Gaze, but I do feel the same way about EO. In my opinion, it’s a hard series to get into and it’s never really grabbed my full attention. I still have never finished an EO game, because I always lost interest.
Anyway, I feel like you’ll really enjoy 7th Dragon when you get around to playing it. 😁

Man, tough crowd. At $15, I'd definitely recommend Stella Glow, as it's a pretty decent game. Nothing ground-breaking, but I would say it does all of the things pretty well that a decent SRPG should do.
Large maps and 4 space movement for almost all characters (box ninja and popo are prettymuch the only ones with decent movement range) and huge amounts of enemies with more turns than you make me disagree that it's even decent. Also not a fan of the battle map units limitation. I haven't played an srpg that only allows so few units on a map besides front mission 3 and arc the lad (though front mission also has fewer enemy units and arc the lad units are typically broken besides 2) and they don't use the turn order system like ateliers and such do.

There is also a free demo for Stella Glow in the eshop if you wanted to try it out before buying.
The demo is of the first couple battles in the game though which are on smaller maps and fewer enemies on top of them not having as frequent turns and isn't an adequate representation what the rest of the game is like besides maybe the last battle. I was fooled by the demo as well and bought the game on sale.

I looked at Blue Reflection's dlc in the US PSN store, and I couldn't make out the Final Fantasy XV costumes in any of them. Are the Cindy and Aranea outfits not out yet?

That character may look like revived Arfoire from Rebirth 1 but it is not. She is called Chrome. Clearly a unique and separate character.

Also the goddesses lost their memories.

I would like to see a real Fate game instead of the terrible-looking EDF-style games they put out.
Hmm, I'm actually not sure what would count as a real Fate game.

There's been VNs (not localized), fighting games, RPGs and now action musous.

Personally, I think going back to RPGs would work quite nicely. (Just NOT the rock-paper-scissors thing from Extra...)

Wow. That might be the worst character intro in a fighting game I've ever seen. I've never watched DBS, but they couldn't have an intro that didn't look like it was pulled from a cheesy 80s romance movie?

Yeah, looks like the baddie from Neptunia MK2. And lol, Neptune loses her memory like every 3 weeks.

Yeah, poor phrasing. A real game, with some effort put into it, that uses the Fate setting. Fate/Unlimited is probably the only one I've seen that looks halfway decent, but that's pretty outdated and even for the time not particularly impressive nor does it at all seem to reflect the character abilities properly. Is there an RPG other than Fate/Grand Order (the mobile one?)

I'd welcome a good 2d fighter but honestly those are a pretty terrible way to translate a series to a video game simply because they're generally supposed to be completely balanced across the characters, which in most cases just doesn't work with the source material. Much as I liked Injustice 2, for example, having Catwoman kick Superman's ass just doesn't make sense. Or Krillin in DBZ Fighter beating down on Freiza.

A good story-driven action RPG would be ideal, to me.

In the end I couldn't resist making this... credits to someone else for the idea though.

I think we can just about close the book on God of War being hands down the best game of the year in 2018.  It's that good.  Even better if you have a decent 4K HDR setup.  I'm completely blown away.  It's a game changer on a few different  levels.  I never had anything but a passing interest in GoW until last weekend.

GOTY will probably come down to God of War and Red Dead Redemption 2 for most. For me it will most likely be between God of War and Dragon Quest XI.

Yeah that's right. So many good games this year. Monster Hunter was exceptional, Ni no Kuni is jrpg goodness. I'm really looking forward to RDR2 as well as that was one of my favorite games from the PS3 era. Can't believe we have DQ11 coming too, good lord. We are certainly in the golden era of PS4 gaming. It doesn't get much better than this.

Can't believe people want to talk about PS5 and stuff. I hope it doesn't hit before 2020. This generation is really hitting its stride now.

The second you stop being blown away by the visuals, GOW quickly turns into Uncharted with open world style fetch quests. I like it but it's not really something we haven't seen before.

Holding out hope Read Dead lives up to the hype.

May PS+ Games

:ps4: Beyond: Two Souls

:ps4: Rayman Legends

:ps3: Risen 3: Titan Lords

:ps3: Eat Them!

:vita: King Oddball (Cross-Buy with :ps3: :ps4:)

:vita: Furmins

Nothing really thread related, but Risen is a german action RPG. The PS4 games are pretty decent too if you're into the genres and don't already own it.

May Amazon Prime Games:

Gone Home

Psychonauts

High Hell

I, Hope

Clustertruck

Titan Souls

This list isn't bad, but it's mostly indie games. Of course it uses the stupid twitch application to download and install them, but I don't believe you need the application to actually run the games. Psychonauts is a good platformer if you haven't played it in the thirteen or so years since it released.

I guess you could say most of the side quests are technically fetch quests but I certainly didn't feel like I was laboring through them as in something like Ni No Kuni 2. God of War doesn't reinvent the wheel but it does what it does very, very well outside of the collectibles which are a pain in the ass to find.

Oh man, how could I forget about Uncharted's robust combo system? :rofl:

Seriously, though, I have yet to be bored at all after 25-30 hours and I love exploring the game's environments.

Eh. RDR2 coming out this year is a bit iffy to me. I won't believe that until it happens.

We do still have the new Spiderman and Tomb Raider to look forward to, as well.

I just finished God of War last night, and thought it was really good.

The ending was a bit lacking for me though. I was expecting another boss fight or something, but instead you just get a cutscene (which is fine since you accomplished what you first set out to do)

If I had to describe my experience with the game it would be:

Beginning -> Oh my god, this game is amazing.

Halfway -> This game is still pretty cool.

3/4 in: I'm kinda getting tired of these fetch quests....Atreus is starting annoy the hell out of me (Story-wise, this is temporary btw).

Finale: Ok, this game is pretty cool again. Sequel when?

I'm guessing the ending is supposed to be this way so they can set up future sequels (I think i read somewhere that the Norse mythology stuff will be a trilogy)

Anyways, despite my minor complaints it was a great game. Definitely one of my considerations for GOTY as well.

My bet is on Spider-Man for GOTY. Everything about that game looks incredible. If they can pull off only a fraction of what those trailers show, it could be up there with the Batman/Arkham franchise.

There's a 15% off Flash Sale at eBay with app + PLAN2SAVE

I used it for couple Vita imports, with 5% CB from Freedom+PP, the games I bought are actually cheaper than buying it locally (in source countries).

There's no way Spider-man's going to be GOTY. I'm planning on getting it, but it looks more like a step back to the God of War 1 & 2 era in terms of game play.

Maybe I reacted a little strongly in my first post, but GoW has been screaming "GotY!" material since I first started it.  I, too, think that Red Dead Redemption 2 will likely share accolades with GoW and be equally impressive, and will also have a great deal of recency bias in regards to end of the year voting.  But there are so many things that GoW does well.  It's kind of like when Guillermo del Toro finally wins best director for the Shape of Water.  Maybe it's not everyone's favorite movie, but it does everything exceptionally well, and mainly it sucks you into its universe to tell a perfect story.  Some might perceive it as a lifetime achievement award, and an accolade that is due in-part to past successes (stories and systems).  But the parts all come together to create a flawless project that will stand the test of time and be remembered forever.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-It respects your time.  puzzles are bite sized.  although there are sidequests, and several areas you have to return to later, every minor puzzle along the main scenario path can be completed as you are doing it.  you can also save your game pretty much anywhere, anytime.
-One single camera take.   this is likely the most impressive part of the presentation.  there are no cuts, no cutscenes.  everything besides the occasional cinema during the MS happens over-the-shoulder from Kratos in one long continuous motion throughout the entire game.  I'm not impressed as I used to be, since over time I learned how they used certain segments: wall hugging, cave crawling,  canoe pathing, and the endless corridor in order to disguise loading times.  (think Destiny.  as you're crossing zones on a planet)
-Satisfying combat.  without having a completely overwhelming combat system like Nioh.  you have lots of different combat options at your disposal.  you can make builds that revolve around the two runic abilities with cooldowns.  or you can play mostly ranged.  the leviathan axe is excellent.  it feels superb while you use it.  it's also the main ingredient for puzzle solving.
-Good storytelling.  the game is not drowning in text across the world.  you're not struggling to pick up book or read tons of dialogue from npcs.  instead you get small snippets here and there.  it's organic.  you unlock murals and wall etchings that come with short descriptions.   stories are told during long canoe rides and during loading or walking sequences.  the game is purposefully designed around the adventure and the experience itself.  you can play without a hud.   boy is an excellent companion.  he does not get annoying nor intrusive and is actually very strong in combat.   the game is very immersive.
-Satisfying RPG elements.  new equipment and upgrades feel powerful.  loot drops are as exciting as they are helpful.  there is little to no wasteful looting (tons of pointless drops).  you can stat up your paper doll according to the way you want to play.  also, player level is everything.  your level changes on the fly as you equip or de-equip gear levels and stats. most equipment can be upgraded.  armors have sockets for enchantments, and you have one slot for a talisman, for special and unique abilities.
-Perfect Length. game is about 30-40 hours, depending on how fast you play, how many sidequests you do.   It does not go on forever, and within a month people will have moved on to other games.  but by no means does this game feel short.  there's tons of stuff to do.   you actually want to do the sidequest stuff.  GoW is absolutely worth $60 and you feel great about buying it while its new and fresh.  I've never seen a better example of a game where people liked the game so much they immediately went back and played it on its hardest difficulty.
-4K HDR presentation.  the graphics are not perfect.  but they are top notch.  the detail on both Kratos and the world is truly astounding.  it's not an eye-searing HDR demo disc like Transformers, but it's exactly how HDR was meant to be implemented.  it has a sense of lifelike realness.  both the lively outdoor world colors and the dreary contoured murky dungeon blacks come alive with texture and depth.  there is room for improvement but this is probably the best HDR game yet.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So maybe I was wrong in the sense that the game is breaking new ground.  It really isn't.  But it does most of these things MUCH BETTER than any game that preceded it.   Everything feels satisfying.  That's the best way to describe it.  All of the parts add up to be a perfectly engineered game.  The immersion is fantastical.  The game pulls you in.  You always want to play more.  You don't want to put it down.  When you are working or living life, you're constantly thinking about playing more GoW.  Very rarely does a game grab me like this.   People are already talking about GoW as being right up there as one of the few very best games of all-time because it has no flaws.  Maybe it doesn't win universal game of the year.   But it will absolutely be among the pantheon of best adult games of all time and it will stand the test of time.  All of the other open world/cinematic action/combat rpg/whatever games coming out in the next year or two are going to pale in comparison to the shiny polished finish of God of War.   Only something Rockstar like Red Dead 2 could hold a candle to its achievement in presentation.  In most ways, GoW is as exciting and memorable as other lifetime historical achievement games like Persona 5 and Zelda Breath of the Wild from 2017.  It is a perfect 10/10 video game.

Not feeling the God of War love. I'm having fun with it, but it's nothing uniquely special. It's one of those games that, after I beat it, I probably wouldn't ever touch it again (like DmC). GoW 3 had more of the 'epic' feel I enjoyed from that series. Looking forward to seeing what they do with the next Tomb Raider and Spider-Man. GOTY 2018 will be between RDR2 and Spider-Man, unless they royally screw up some major facet of those games.

My Switch has a message saying Senran Kagura Refle (Reflexions in NA) is now 820 yen in the Japanese eshop. A whole savings of 180 yen

EDIT: Pretty sure I have a buyer, so it's not available anymore.

Would anyone be interested in an extra Gal*Gun 2 Free Hugs Edition (Extras Only) that I have? More in spoiler tag

I bought two to get free shipping from Rice since their paid shipping is so expensive. I'm alright with having a copy of the game for each system, but I don't need two of the boxes of the CE stuff.

PM me if you're interested in buying it. I'm not trying to scalp, so I figure $100 CE price - $60 game price + $5 shipping for around $45 shipped, unless the shipping is somehow way more than I'm anticipating. It's still sealed and doesn't have any visible damage from shipping.

Is The Last of Us Part 2 coming out this year? That's another one I'm pretty highly anticipating, and would be a GOTY nominee from me.

I haven't seen much of Spiderman yet, but if it's anything like Infamous, then I am super hyped for it. And yeah, if it's anything like the Arkham games I will be super impressed too, since I absolutely loved Arkham Knight. And I know you love it too lol, since its been 3 years and no one has beaten your Gotham's Finest high score yet, and I doubt anyone ever will.

Speaking of Batman, that Batman Ninja movie was phenomenal. One of the best anime I have watched in a while.
