Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Bummer. This really sucks for a console-only gamer like me. I also would have been interested in a new LE... :/

I would have bought it either way, but it didn't do big Japanese numbers and they really just added some extra DLC characters

New Overwatch D.Va Nano Cola Challenge has started today. All you have to do is buy some Mountain Dew win 9 games starting today until September 10th. After winning 9 matches you will be awarded D.Va's new ponytail epic skin which was also given Kyon's "Ponytails Turn Me On" stamp of approval. You'll also be awarded some exclusive D.Va sprays for watching some partnered Twitch streamers, you can see the schedule and a listing of who to watch in the Overwatch website but I don't see Kayopolice listed so I don't care... then again I could just leave the stream running in the background.

I forgot to post this earlier in the month, but Amazon Prime's August PC games are as follows:

Wizardry Bundle (Contains 6, 7 & 8)

Jotun: Valhalla Edition

Antihero

SteamWorld Dig

Death Squared

Claim at: https://www.twitch.tv/prime

Wizardry is a first-person dungeon crawler RPG and SteamWorld Dig is an... action-adventure platformer? I think? Some decent games either way and like usual, they can only be downloaded (and played?) through the Twitch application. So if you have Prime, I'd grab them before September hits later in the week.

A neat roguelike strategy game titled Into the Breach seems to have stealth released (?) on the Switch today for $15:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKLnPfMtcGg

It's a pretty good game and prior to this release it was PC only. The developer is also the one who made FTL, another strategy roguelike. Both of which are rated quite highly. I thought I'd mention it since it will probably go unnoticed in next weeks release update and it deserves at least a look.

I loved FTL and I'm looking forward to trying Into the Breach.

Not an obvious match for this thread, though...

September's PS+ List:

:ps4: Destiny 2 (Available now)

:ps4: God of War III Remastered

:ps3: Another World - 20th Anniversary Edition (Cross-Buy with :ps4: :vita:)

:ps3: QUBE Director's Cut (Cross-Buy with :ps4:)

:vita: Sparkle 2 (Cross-Buy with :ps3: :ps4:)

:vita: Foul Play (Cross-Buy with :ps4:)

PSVR - Here They Lie

PlayLink - Knowledge is Power

Nothing particularly thread relevant next month. The Destiny 2 doesn't include any expansions obviously, but there's a 24h free trial of the latest expansion apparently.

Giving Destiny 2 is pretty meh. You'll only be able to play through the story, but endgame activities are tied to DLC. They raise the level required to participate with each new piece and the newest one is releasing 9/4.

All giving free Destiny 2 does is piss off everyone that paid for it on release day.   I'm reminded monthly what a bad taste in my mouth that whole business plan of theirs left.  People who bought the $200 CE are especially pissed at the way they gutted the value of the initial investment.

What's sad is that I actually really enjoyed the game too.   It's the publisher/exec bullshit that ruins everything.

I don't really follow Destiny, as I quit the franchise before the first expansion in the first game, but this sounds a lot like what made me quit DCU Online.
I payed $60 upfront and a monthly fee until they went free to play and then downgraded my account to the equivalent of someone who had only given them $5.
Pissed me off something fierce. I put a ton of time into that game, but that was enough to make me quit immediately.
If you're gonna go F2P, you better damn well give your original subscribers some love for the money they've already given you.

Destiny rant:
They are reselling Destiny 2 to everyone again this fall for $70-80, rebranded under a new expansion pack.   (The game just came out in August '17.)  When all they added through the initial "expansion pass" were a couple of trivial DLCs.  It's carved content.  "But the expansion is only $39.99", you say.  Nope, not if you want the "expansion pack" plus the "annual pass" for the expansion's expansions, for one year only.     I mean, this game just came out a year ago people.   What in the actual fuck.  Like everyone that spent $100-200 on it last time are supposed to do it again this August 31st.  All they do is carve out content.

Activision ruined everything.  It almost doesn't even matter if it is a great game now.  Most of their biggest supporters feel disenfranchised.  The people that spend the most and play the most get screwed the most.  The loot treadmill (total progression) is reset every 4 months.

You have to do homework just to figure out which editions of the game you need to buy.

anyone got thoughts on lost sphere? SQ store has it 50% off at 25.. but im on the fence..
There is a demo on Switch so prob on PS4 also. Game didn't seem good or bad to me from the demo, just kinda run-of-the-mill. And that seems to be consensus from people that play the full game also from what I hear.

Kill La Kill should not have been a fighting game. An action hack and slash game would've suited KLK much better
It looks like a low end ps2 game which is pretty damn sad.
I think people are spoiled nowadays. I often wonder if people who decry games as "looking like PS2" are even old enough to know what that actually means. KLK looks leaps and bounds better than a PS2 game.

If the gameplay is solid, that's more than good enough in terms of graphics, especially given KLK while a rather successful series, is ultimately a product of a niche genre in a niche market. Not every game from a series you like is going to get the resources to make it look like a AAA, or even a AA experience.

Be thankful anyone is even making a KLK game. We all know outside of Japan this game is going to sell - if lucky - a couple thousand copies.

i said nothing about graphics. Nor am i acting spoiled. Just saying I would've preferred an action hack and slash game for Kill La Kill. It fits more. It does have the animation going for it though and looks close to the anime

Not thankful when the studio is A+

I'm just sitting now on the outside for D2 with my moments of triumph shirts trying to figure out where this train is going at the moment. Forsaken seems like a step forward in the right direction but I feel like we will follow the same wheel I have been running on for 1000 hours: Vanilla> 2 Dark Below Expansions that slap the least amount of lore >TTK which is the most polished> Rise of Iron tier-Okay but still small >D3 on new consoles

Granted now I don't have to worry about getting D2 Digitally now because I don't like having to swap discs. I am part of the crowd who still likes Destiny for what it is but feels like it is wasted potential. The leaked raid lore wise forsake is well....holy hell that is finally interesting.

I mean, there's some valid criticism there. The character models look decent, but the particle effects and environment look like butt. It looks like they're also using a animation style that lends itself more towards a 2D perspective and looks awkward in a 3D arena. The characters resemble drawings but the 3D environments and smooth camera clash pretty noticeably.

Also, I've never watched KLK, but from the little clips I've seen of it, it is highly stylized with dynamic camera work and body manipulation. I also feel like I recall a presence of sketch lines in some sequences and I'm seeing none of that here.

The gameplay looks like it's trying to combine arena fighters with 2D fighters, but it looks best when characters are just up close and fighting without the camera moving. Probably just shoulda been a classic 2D fighter.

I'll play it, though, if we get it. The gameplay looks like it has potential, it just doesn't do a very good job of matching the quality or energy of the anime. Just looks kinda tepid.

Looks choppy as hell. Ya should of been a hack n slash or a 2.5D fighter.
And lots of Ps2 games look great, mgs3, gt4, silent hill 2,3,4, re4, jak n Daxter, pop in components for 480i! :p

Man... the Kill la Kill game looks rough...

Man, this is awful. I don't even like KLK that much outside of enjoying the character designs, but it would've made an excellent game had they bothered to do it right. Should've just done a proper Guilty Gear type fighting game with a bunch of Trigger characters.

I didn't say there are no great looking ps2 games though. Hell some of those look good even with a crappytv/setup. Just that this particular game looks pretty poor.

as for the guy saying people are spoiled. No some of us just have standards. I can look past mediocre graphics if the rest of it is good enough. But when you are doing stuff like this on purpose that definitely doesn't lend much faith.

Tencent is cancer and will probably lead to much ruin. However, they are making huge steps in breaking into the western market whether it be streaming or console. Trust me, next gen we will be hearing about a Tencent streaming or gaming console here in the west. I have no interest in chinese products.

And I love hearing that about DMC5 never even considering taking the soyboy route that God of War took. Itsuno is our guy. Long live DMC

DMC5 is probably my most anticipated game right now, even above KH3, Smash Bros and whatever else is coming out in the next 6 months. It just looks so good and I absolutely love the genre. Can't wait!

I have a lot of mixed feelings on Kill la Kill (the anime).  The first few episodes were exceptional but then it quickly turned into a giant slog.  It was a chore to finish.  But it does pick up again near the end.  I wanted to like this show badly, and I did, for a time.  But I think it's absolutely the most overrated anime in recent years.

I wonder how much of KLK's popularity has to do with the subsection of anime fans that consider Gurren Lagann to be the best anime of all-time, and the ones that think Gainax is the best studio.

Does anyone know the rationale of PA to make 3K for the RXN LE but 1K for the standard? Seems odd the LE has more copies than the standard edition.

Here is my quote from the Limited/Indie/Obscure game thread:

For what its worth the "Standard" edition comes in every box of the "Limited" edition as the LE includes both the standard case and a steelbook case. Looking at it that way the Standard edition is actually 4000 copies and the LE contents (steelbook, artbook, big box and other stuff) are actually 3000 copies. So that is probably why they named it the way they did lol.

As much as I love Kill la Kill, I have to agree with the majority here that the graphics look bad.

But considering its coming from the group that also made the Little Witch Academia game, I guess this was to be expected...

/StartRant

I honestly really tried to play that Little Witch game, but it's soooooooo boring (I even fell asleep once during a playthrough)

Not only that, but the graphics choice in that game is really strange. The characters are all jagged-edged like when moving or in a cutscene, but when still look like a perfect picture. Frame rate is also weird for some reason, not sure if it's an aesthetic they were going for, or if it's a technical limitation. (I see the same happening in that Kill la Kill gameplay vid) I really wished they had something that looked nice kinda like Ni no Kuni, or even the 2D/3D style of Dragonball FighterZ.

Also, for some reason playing that Little Witch game causes my PS4 to go into overdrive with a super loud fan. Makes me think that game was also not optimized right for the system. WHY  :shame:

/EndRant

Kill La Kill was a poor choice for translating into 3D graphics. The original animation style of the show is heavily reliant on exaggeration. That type of animation is very difficult to effectively achieve with modern 3D graphics, especially 3D in-game graphics. Getting a real-time rendered game to emulate that style was always going to be a near-insurmountable objective.

Likewise, the story of the anime doesn't really lend itself well to most game-types either. Once again, it is far less about the action, and much more focused on exaggerated characters. The action is just an occasional set-piece, and is at its best when it directly relates to the over-the-top characterizations. In truth, a fighting game is one of the better choices for game types, thanks to the short play sessions. But there was never going to be an ideal game style for this particular show. The best aspects of the show are the parts that are hardest or least appealing to translate into an interactive medium.

Anime games are almost always terrible just like movies based on video games.  It's because they are designed with the sole intent of cashing in.  There is no soul or developer vision there.

Amazon Prime's September PC Games are up:

The Adventure Pals

Pumped BMX

Strife: Veteran Edition

Guild of Dungeoneering

Gunpoint

Claim Link: https://www.twitch.tv/prime

Guild of Dungeoneering is a turn-based card roguelike RPG and The Adventure Pals is an Action Platformer with some RPG elements. The rest aren't even remotely thread relevant, but it's an alright selection. August's games are still listed there until the end of this month. So if you still have Amazon Prime, you may as well grab them. Like usual, these are only downloadable/playable through the Twitch app on PC.
