You mean I can't pass my world history class by playing Battlefield games? This was going to be an investment in my education.
 
Luckily Red Dead Redemption and Assassin's Creed are 100% historically accurate. Who cares about rewriting history in a video game? That seems like an excuse for being mad rather than a real reason.
 
The video game industry rewrites history all the damn time.  It's not as if all people from all other cultures speak English with a caricature of an accent, even in their own country and even to their fellow countrymen, and often decades if not centuries ago, no?

Till the end of time is easily the best out of those 3. People pretty much stopped liking the series after this game. The 2 most recent ones are mediocre at best.

The problem is that you’re taking real world events and making a game around it. In the past they at least tried to make it close to realistic. I remember playing an earlier COD game where you storm the beach of Normandy and man I was pumped playing that scene.

Taking a historical event and then just throwing historical accuracy out the window just for diversity is disgusting pandering at its worst.

I’m all for female protagonists, diverse cultures, diverse languages, and protagonists from all kinds of different cultures and backgrounds. For gods sake I like Foreign games movies and anime with subtitles because It feels more authentic. It would be awesome if games had more depth in those areas but do it where it makes a lick of goddamn sense.

If they wanted to make up some kind of modern day war and have that same character in the lead role I’d have no problem with it. But WW II? GTFO

Assassin's Creed isn't even logically accurate considering I yell "come at me bro" at the screen in every fight in Odyssey and come out the victor. It's more just superhero's creed now.

Historic accuracy is important!!! You know how it actually took much longer for soldiers to regenerate health? the History Channel never mentions that the check points weren't as abundant. Luckily they fixed some of the bugs from World War 1 but just repeated the same Germany villains.

 
Exploding red barrels is all the historical accuracy I need.  Well that and thousands of rounds of readily available ammo.  I do find the mud physics a bit lacking though.

Go find text books and newspapers up to the mid 50’s. Hitler was always shown as a leftist..... little by little that has changed.
Go look at how many now doubt if the holocaust even happened.

True its just a game, but its just one more medium that changes history to one point of view.

The problem is the pandering.  If you want to make a movie or game about a group of black soldiers in a war where they were considered less than their white counter-parts, that's interesting and also relevant because it's based on reality.  But if movie makers or game designers are inserting current day social issues into games without a basis for it, it's not relevant  and it's not based on reality.  Sure there were disabled people and lesbians in the 40's, but are there documented accounts of this in the military (specifically older military)?

My point is not that it should be all straight all the time.  My point is that agendas and pandering to certain groups and audiences aren't needed at every corner of every media.  There may be media where it is appropriate to include these characters when they have some relevancy and a basis for reality.

 
Feh. Video games have always been about pandering. Remember the 1990s, where game companies would release a cavalcade of blood-soaked versus fighters, each one more violent than the last? And we'd all gather around the arcade cabinet of the latest fatality-filled fighter, saying, "Huh huh. That guy's head 'sploded. That is like, cool, Beavis." That was pandering.

It's also why video games are the way they are these days, with the sex and violence ramped up to eleven. People expect video games to be boob-filled blood fountains, and they get angry and indignant when that expectation is denied. It was pandering, and each game company trying to out-pander all the others, that got us to that point.

He started with some leftist ideals and ended up solely on the far right by the 1930s, before WWII, which is what he's known for. That's not history chipping away at anything.

Anyways, this is not the place for it, and you're obviously bothered by the fact that you're so closely aligned with Hitler.

First of all I’m not worked up at all. I’m just pointing out how rediculous the whole thing is. It’s dissappointing though because I love history and when they said they were going back to WW 2 I was excited. But I want historical accuracy to a certain level at least because I like history.

Second of all, Did you even read that article you quoted? It said some women were allowed to fight in defensive placements in England and were not allowed to fight on the frontlines overseas. I wasn’t aware they were allowed to do even that much so I learned something. But the point still stands. A disabled woman on the frontline of World War II is so inaccurate its funny.

I don’t have a problem with a woman protagonist but I do have a problem with just making history up and selling it as a realistic game about historic events. If it was set in near present day or the future then I don’t have a problem with a woman hero. Yes it’s a game but if you want to make shit up then call it battlefield: let’s pretend!

I don’t know maybe it’s all explained in some goofy story that somehow tries to make it plausible in game but I’m not interested in recreating history just to pander to social justice folks.

No one is rewriting history. It's a video game where you regenerate like Wolverine on the field. Whining about a female protagonist being not realistic in a game that is unrealistic in its core game play components is laughable. To compare this to rewriting history is downright idiotic.

Is it though? How many kids will play this battlefield game and walk away with the idea that women were able to be frontline soldiers during WW II?

Doesn’t that erode a person’s concept of historical inequality that existed in that time period? Instead of promoting equality of women some could argue that you’re whitewashing the real inequalities of the past by pretending they were on the frontline fighting next to the men.

You want to pretend that because it’s a game it’s not connected to reality at all but that’s simply not true. I guarantee they use real cities, locations, battles, and key scenarios from the actual war in the game. They are using historical facts to make a believable background for a fictional plot. The entire game is based on and around factual historical events. Yes it’s a game but it’s also a picture of history and the more you warp pictures of history, the harder it is to keep fact from fiction.

Shouldn’t we just teach children how to tell the difference between fact and fiction? Yes, there are factual aspects in this game but it is a video game that takes 100’s of liberties because in the end it is a game meant for enjoyment. This is not a tool we will use to teach children, why try to act like it will be?

This debate is absolutely bonkers.
