Normally I don’t get involved in this kind of discussion, but it sounds to me like the THQ Nordic/8chan thing was literally one guy’s decision who didn’t know about the history of the site or what went on there. No company would deliberately commit PR suicide by associating itself with child pornography or any other kind of serious illegal activity. It’s obvious it wasn’t meant to represent the company or the rest of its employees’ values as a whole. Just the wrong platform for an AMA, clearly. I seriously don’t understand why people are willing to not buy their games because of one guy’s mistake, intentional or not.

The gaming industry has way, way more pressing issues that you should be voting with your money over. Predatory business practices and game mechanics involving gambling, overworked employees working thankless jobs who are lucky to get paid for all the work they do, digital platforms that literally steal information from other programs you use to try to one-up competitors. And we’re upset some guy hosted an AMA to a questionable audience and then apologized? Come on, guys.

It was a PR stunt because they thought it would be a crazy, weird thing to do, but the head of Marketing and a couple guys on the board of directors were involved in the whole thing that makes it hard to sweep under the rug since nobody lost their jobs over it.

No, child pornography and racism are serious problems, but considering it was an AMA for a video game company posted in a video game thread I’m going to go out on a limb and say the majority of its audience was not the subgroup of 8chan involved in all that terrible stuff. And I’m not doubting the PR manager’s position in the company, but no matter how you look at it he’s still just one person who instructed some other people to assist him in something no one knew any better about. I mean how often do you have to worry about being associated with literal criminals just by posting about video games in a video game forum? People are reading way too much into this. It was a careless mistake, but they’ve apologized and obviously didn’t partake in any kind of illegal activity some of the community there is known for. It is not worth not buying good games that hard-working developers made, just because one guy tried to do something just about every other gaming company does every day, except on the wrong site. (As long as that’s all there is to it, of course.)

If you’re gonna boycott anyone, boycott Taco Bell until they bring the Beefy Crunch Burrito back. They’re the real monsters here.
