I love AMD and if this is true then great, but I'm honestly having a hard time believing both the performance numbers and pricing. Vega 64 was barely competing with the 1080 so them competing with the 2070 just doesn't seem plausible. But who knows, maybe the 7nm architecture is just that much better. That pricing would be stupid too because they would be leaving money on the table. They could raise each of those $50-75 and still be beating Nvidia by a fair amount.
I'd be all over a 3080 at that price. Seems kind of suspect to me.

Also, AMD needs to be able to compete with NVidia at the high end. I keep seeing articles saying they intend to do just that. Also, without a release date beyond 2019, these might not be out before NV releases their refresh parts, thus making these cards potentially look another generation behind.

I agree entirely that never cheap out on a good PSW and even if after troubleshooting it isn't the problem I would still recommend it with the age of the previous one. That being said, I don't recall if you noted whether or not this is a new build (believe it is) but as Fox and Gospel mentioned does strike me as odd if your system really is drawing that much.

I think if it were me the first things I would do is

1. Ensure your temps are never spiking over recommended ranges and

2. (my gut instinct w/o knowing anything else) remove all but 1 of your memory dimms and test then remove that one and put another in test, so on so forth until all have been checked. Also check same stick in multiple dimm slots, to verify no error there as well.

From what you've said the only thing that is really giving me goosebumps is that you mention having graphical artifacts. That tends to be a video card memory issue. You don't happen to have a secondary card or onboard video that you can check do you?

Finally, check this site out https://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator as it should give you an idea if your system is drawing as much as you believe it is. It won't rule out age of your current PSU but there are tests you can run under load to see if your voltage is dipping too much.
Hi and thanks for your input. This is an upgrade technically, but besides most of the hard drives, it's all new components. New MB, CPU, RAM, GPU (this was used), case, CPU cooler.

Temps are definitely within acceptable ranges; I have not seen anything over 65c on the GPU and the CPU is not being stressed at all.

I'm certainly willing to play around with the memory, but I really think that's a long shot. I have a fair amount of experience troubleshooting systems and I am pretty convinced it's power supply or GPU.

I did use the word artifact, but perhaps this was misleading - I never see artifacts in games. Only when the entire system locks up just before rebooting. I don't have any pics of the screen handy, but it reminds me of what one would get trying to use an unsupported resolution. I can likely trigger the lockup so I can try to take a pic and post but it wouldn't be possible until later this evening.

I have onboard video and could check this, but certainly can't run the games or benchmarks using the onboard video. As a side note, I have never had an issue in a 2d game either - been playing Ori and the Blind forest and no issues at all. So that's not stressing the vid card or the power.

Realistically, I shouldn't be drawing more than 700 - 750w or so absent spikes at peak usage; I'll check the calculator when I have some time. Appreciate the link and tips.

EDIT - PSU Calculator is recommending an 850. Not entirely surprising here. And if my old PSU is not delivering the full 850, then it seems pretty plausible that the PSU is the issue.

If you are comfortable with troubleshooting and your gut is telling you it is PSU and you have the ability to upgrade at sale price then I would definitely do so. There is quite literally no reason not to if the impact of the cost is negligible. Hopefully that is it and you don't have any other issues. If you are correct I would be very hesitant to play anything until you get that new PSU in as undervolting hardware is absolutely horrendous for it.

Yeah - my hope is I drop in a new PSU and all is well. This is CAG, so cost is always a concern, but If I can get a new PS for $100-$150, I'd be OK with that. And since all I am missing for my second box is a PSU, I'll be able to get that box up and running as well with the old PSU. So it's more or less win-win for me.

Now if I drop in a new PS and I still have random lock-ups, then troubleshooting goes to the next step. Unfortunately, I don't have much in the way of spare parts to play around with or I could be more methodical in my approach. So to some extent, I'm going with my gut.

I do appreciate the advice - and heads up on PSU deals would be awesome.

Thanks!

I'm in need of a new power supply and kicking myself for not jumping on the EVGA 1300 deal from Black Friday at B&H. I'm in the market for a 1200w or higher gold or better PS. If you folks see a PS good deal, could you post it or msg me?

The long story: I upgraded most of my PC last month and it's definitely drawing more power. I currently have a Seasonic 850 gold PS, but it is many years old. I'm getting random lockups in multiple games and since everything else seems to check out as OK, I believe it has to be either the power supply unable to deal with voltage spikes, or the vid card, which I got used. I'm really hoping it's the PS, because the vid card is way more expensive and the wife will freak if I want to replace it again. 850 should have been enough to handle the power draw, but since it's more than 5 years old, I'm thinking it's simple not able to pull the full 850w any more. I can use it in another PC I'm building with the old parts, so nothing lost. So I am going with 1200-1300 to be on the safe side. Plus, I understand the PS should be most efficient at about 50% load, so the overkill should work out to my benefit.

Thanks!
What in the world are you doing that causes you to need that much power? Most gaming rigs use 400-500w of power at most.

Just FYI, this advice is a little outdated. It was definitely the case 10 years ago, but the solid state parts in then now are pretty linear, that you lose a lot less efficiency than you used to.

I really doubt it's your supply, and I doubt you need a 1300 W. The symptom of a PSU limiting output is not really freezing.

I'm not overclocking yet. But once I get things stabilized, I will likely kick the CPU up a bit.

I'm running an 8086k CPU and a Vega 64 GPU (liquid cooled) - This is the big power draw - at stock, it's pulling more than 350 watts and I think it's occasionally spiking. I'm trying to undervolt, but the lockups are confusing my ability to determine a stable voltage. In addition, I have three mechanical hard drives, an M.2, and two SATA SSD's.

I haven't tried to run Prime 95 since for the moment I'm running the CPU at stock. I have run some memtest runs on the memory and it seems fine. Chances of a CPU issue are really slim.

What happens is the screen will freeze up while gaming while I still hear sound for a bit. Then I will get a black screen with some graphic artifacts and then the system reboots- I have seen this same issue in multiple games and occasionally in benchmarking tools like Heaven or 3DMark. I have no issues outside of games or graphic benchmarks. I think it's power spikes because it seems kind of random.

So yeah, 850 should be enough, but if I'm getting power spikes and these are causing lockups, I want to throw more power at it. Again, since my power supply is older, it's probably not still capable of supplying the full 850, but I don't know how to tell what it is actually supplying - I don't have a way to measure draw at the wall.

And while 1200 may be more than I need, it will rule out power spikes as the culprit, and $80 for a 1300 watt gold PS was such a good deal, if I can get close to that, then why not?

EDIT - Tried to address Fox's questions as well.
750w should be enough for you dude. You are probably drawing up to 650w of power. Anything over that is cake. I'd watch the buildapcsales subreddit closely. PSUs go on sale all the time. A week ago they had an EVGA 750w G3 for only $59.99. I will try to post them here if I see any deals.

Very nice build btw.

If he has a USB onahole setup (charger, warmer, software + liquid resistant USB cord) one session can easily top out around 250W max draw. If he's looking for a dual-onahole setup (not asking questions here) I can definitely understand the need.

Yeah I agree. Those prices seem very far off. They would completely cannibalize the previous AMD product lines. Maybe that's inevitable? I'm not sure. But there is no reason to sell the new cards that cheaply.

Wcctech is a frequent perpetrator of incorrect leaks too. Not saying I don't like them; I do. But you have to go into it knowing that 50% of their "leaks" will be incorrect.

The Vega 64 draws 350+ by itself. It's kind of ridiculous.
When did you get the Vega 64? What brand? Maybe it's still under warranty? I would check, even if you bought it used. Have you introduced any new USB components to your rig?

I know it sounds stupid, but I was having random freezes/lock ups/issues. Couldn't figure it out. Ended up upgrading everything. They returned. Got super pissed. Then it turned out to be this shitty Creative sound card I was using. Not sure if the sound card was defective or if it's just a shitty product/drivers. Unplugged it. Never got those problems again. I got the soundcard replaced under warranty and they sent me a new one but no way I'm ever using a creative product again.

IMO the best way of troubleshooting is to remove all non-essential parts and replace one by one till you hit the problem again. It is time consuming but allows you to properly diagnose the issue.

The card is a Sapphire. I checked and because I got it used, they don't transfer warranty to second-hand buyers. Even if there were any warranty left on the card.

As I mentioned, it's almost a complete rebuild of the system. Going back to the older parts is a non-starter at this point. But If I got a new Power supply, I could theoretically test the card on the older box without much difficulty. Having said this, all peripherals in use prior to upgrade are still in use and were not causing issues on the old build. But yeah - technically, any of the new parts could be at fault, especially the Vega 64. Just given the nature of the issue and the seeming randomness I came to the conclusion it could be power related.

Just out of curiosity, and because I saw someone mention something, if it were a faulty or overloaded power supply, what would the issue look like?

The Ryzen 2 and Navi leaks if true will make for an exciting CES next month. 8c/16 thread R5 cpus for $180-229. 6c/12 thread R3 as low as $129. Ryzen 7 chips with 12c/24t at $300-330.

I presume everyone in here got their 1¢ whoppers from the BK app?
I tried. I couldn't get it to work, so I hit up my local burger joint and got a southern style burger (fried green tomatoes, homemade pimento cheese, etc.) instead. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the way things turned out. Thanks, Burger King!

Not a fan of Whoppers and don't want my phone recording I was anywhere near a McDonald's. Both places have overpriced, mediocre, artery-clogging food. On the low end of that lowest tier that Five Guys is in. ;)

So many cores.

I just care about how well it does in games.  Some games will even perform slower with all those extra cores unless you shut them down.  I can't get headshots, stream porn, farm gold, make youtube content, watch lifehack videos, rub my tummy, pat my head, and poop all the same time.

I think that's the one I've had cooling my overclocked i7-860 for the past four or five years. 3.6GHz comin' at ya from 2009, baby!
Yeah man. I've been using the same one for the last six years too. I can't overclock the cpu anymore though because it results in game crashes. Some of the liquid has prolly evaporated over time. But it's still humming along and doing it's thing. No leaks, and not a single minute of maintenance in six years.

Hmmm, Celeste is 14 on ps4 and it's usual sale price of 16 on steam; not discounted on humble. I'll probably buy it this weekend, but think I'd prefer it on pc; might spend the extra $2 if nobody else puts it on sale.

Celeste and Donut County are the 2 games I feel I need to play before Giant Bomb's GOTY stuff starts up.

Bethesda open world games are typically janky messes.  Only now they don't have the crutch of player-made mods and console commands (or even save/reload) to fall back on.

Ubi released a teaser trailer for Far Cry 6.

They should have skipped the pseudo-Fallout wannabe stuff and just made the post-apocalyptic world into Blood Dragon.
