Overfall's been revoked from an old (2018) Fanatical bundle.

They claim they were never paid by their publisher.
Original post:

Dev Announcement About Revoked Overfall Keys

Hi Folks,

The cd-key situation is like this; years ago through a publisher, we made a deal to make Overfall known for wider audiences. This "publisher" wanted approx. 30k keys from us and said they were going to pay us after-sales. Unfortunately, we got scammed by them and couldn't receive payment. On top of that, we witnessed that these keys were being sold on other fraud sites. This is why we had to revoke them.

We're very well aware that you're aggrieved. To make things sorted out we want to give the keys you got from them back again; please fill out the form below so we can send you your fresh keys through e-mail.

Please don't forget that trusting 3rd party sites and not buying the game directly from Steam has consequences sometimes; we learned it the hard way.

Take care all.
Wowwwww: "Please don't forget that trusting 3rd party sites and not buying the game directly from Steam has consequences sometimes".

Talk about some mega asshole developers!

LMFAO, no, agreeing to give a bunch of keys to a publisher that you haven't secured payment from "has consequences". The only people who fucked up here is the developer who revoked the keys and then sleazily blamed their players for it.

This is a legal dispute over payment between the developer and the publisher. Instead of pursuing that legal dispute with the publisher they signed an agreement with, they just decided to fuck over all their customers, fuck over Steam, fuck over Fanatical etc.

Oh yeah, and try to blackmail the customers into handing over their personal data to get their legal purchase back.

Hope this developer gets absolutely obliterated out of existence. Steam should blacklist them, any jurisdiction that has laws protecting consumers or privacy laws should fine them out of existence. And judging from the developer being shitty enough to pull this shit, I'm guessing they are lying about the publisher breaking contract, so the publisher should also sue them out of existence.

Wouldn't be surprised if this is another case where the publisher is arguing something like dodging payment through COVID-19 leniency laws to put off paying debts. Again, a completely legal process that is between the developer and publisher to resolve, the only truly evil actor here is the developer who decides to fuck over the players over this.

That's a friendly reminder that you don't own your own digital goods, and you never will.   In a sense, it's good for people to see that happen every now and then (on lesser things that don't matter much).

EDIT:

Talking about not owning digital goods...

If I bought a game digitally and it was taken away from me in this fashion, I have no qualms about getting the game another way if I decide to play it later.

If we really care about our games & preservation of them - we have to make sure we do buy games on Steam that aren't protected by any DRM there; and/or support GOG and their policies. And, of course, we have to back those up - in case those stores/services do go the way of the dodo..

Even GOG has gotten a bit relaxed on DRM, in some cases - as some games do have like extra content locked behind Galaxy usage (No Man Sky GOG version did this until recently, when everyone was mad about SP-content gated behind galaxy...so it got fixed); MP games are allowed on GOG (even if they only use & require Galaxy); some games aren't getting updates or installers as often; etc etc.

At least...normally, most SP campaigns do work w/out Galaxy and don't have other DRM tied to it.

Though, I really do wonder though - when game streaming off of Cloud become a requirement and no longer an option.

This is why I welcome services like GamePass: at least there, it's nobody is bullshitting you that any of this actually belongs to you.

If you genuinely think about storefronts like Steam, they are clearly part of the overall trend in tech of promises that are far too good to ever keep.

What's in it for Steam to provide thousands of gigabytes of free data hosting in perpetuity for a bunch of games you long ago paid for that aren't bringing in any money to them now? Nothing but good faith and the precedent that people haven't yet gotten used to their games being taken away.

The whole model where you get to permanently in perpetuity use other people's computers to store your entire games collections without paying a subscription fee, is clearly not something sustainable decades down the line.

Sooner or later, even if Steam doesn't go the way of the dodo, it seems inevitable that everyone, Steam included, will begin bringing this model down to earth: first probably a time limit for support on new purchases, "Any new purchases made after April 1st, 2027 will be guaranteed Steam support for five years! Download at any time, we'll never charge during your support period", then followed later by a revoking on games grandfathered-in "Games purchased before April 1st, 2027 under the old model, must be downloaded before December 12th, 2032. You can purchase Steam Support for any game in your library for only $669.98 for five years of full support on a previous purchase", or maybe a "subscription model" to keep access to your Steam library even earlier than that.

At least w/ Steam (and also most other services), you do have access to the actual game-file and folders...provided you have the files downloaded already (unlike Game Pass). As long as some crazy modder or crew could break the DRM; make a Steam emulator (or any other client, for that matter); re-work the game (if need be); make a new engine for said game-files; and/or reverse-engineer the game - these files could get used and not gone to waste.

You have literally no control over Game Pass's files for PC. Sure, GamePass is more up-front about what it is and all - but these are all Hidden Windows files in the WindowsApps folder and it treats you as if you have no right to really back-up, mod, fix, manipulate, or whatever. Whatever you have, you're stuck with - and we know companies ain't the greatest w/ supporting their games way after original launch.

Modding or fixing PC games, especially so they work on newer OS's, is so common-place - just check a Steam Guide and/or PC Gaming Wiki...and these can be pretty extensive and telling. I mean, could we imagine if Vampire: Bloodlines we never had access to these files? Or Sacred 1: Gold? Or the Scarface: The World is Yours game? Yeah, those are pains to get running properly without modding.

Yep, clearly the only way to go is through non-official means.

In another decade or two though, good luck buying a single piece of computer kit that won't have "trusted computing modules" built in that lock down the entire system and guarantee nothing unapproved by whatever powers that be can run.

The only hope is a political movement pushing to secure more consumer rights. But there is depressingly absolutely no movement for that happening right now.

The way Microsoft and Apple are going, wouldn't surprise me if in who knows how many years, we're either running old OS's on our rigs and/or running Linux, for our gaming needs.

When it comes to game preservation, the industry's awful at this. You'd think companies would purposely re-issue, re-master, re-release and keep their old games alive more than they already do. How many of these games, if re-released properly, would just be basically be a license to just print $ for them?

Yet, a lot of times - eh, they don't do this stuff; and we have to resort to mods to fix their broken and/or un-updated products.

You'd think, these companies would make sure they keep their source code and stuff like that around, so they can keep re-releasing & re-mastering stuff, to keep that cash flow going and to keep people interested in sequels to their franchises.

DRM, anti-tamper, restrictive game-clients, features built-into only specific services, no LAN support, no local multiplayer, and/or stuff like that is only shackling these things down.

And services like Game Pass w/ their file restrictions - that ain't helping anyone here either. I'd probably gladly buy more games from Microsoft and their Game Store, if someone found ways around these folders with an app or something, Microsoft gave us access to these files, and/or something of that sort. As broken as G4WL was as a service, even G4WL was better at that stuff at not restricting game-folder access - since in that regard, it was still old-school w/ file access. At least I can run some old G4WL games like The Club, thanks to file access and modders making the game work w/out it.

This trend has been beyond disturbing; the power and breaks given to big business and conglomerates. And lawmakers that do absolutely nothing towards keeping tech companies in check.

What is with you and pan pizzas, white suit avatar guy?

Best thing I’ve seen all day.

I did just make one of the better pizzas of my life tonight. The common factor every time I make a remarkably good pizza (imho) is that I let it ferment longer than I ever have before. Have yet to overproof a dough; I'm still not convinced it's even possible.

Another day another Steam review this one in EA Luck Be a Landlord.

I have to say that this game feels early enough in EA, but it has an end game as well. This is a rogue-lite slot machine game. You play as someone in an apartment who is given a slot machine to help pay for the rent. It starts with 5 symbols all in random places. Every turn you get some payout for these icons and then you're able to add icons to get more money to pay off the rent in a number of spins. If you're able to pay it off you get the next rent and the number of spins to pay it off along with some goodies usually (1 higher choice ranked icon for the slot machine, an item that does stuff for your gameplay, some items to reroll choices and remove icons). The graphics in this game are simple, but nice. Everything is easy to tell for the most part. The interface is nice enough although I find it quite a pain to see your items when you're making icon choices. This needs to be changed, as those icons interact with many items, so it's important to know what to choose. Also you can pass on anything such as icons or items. The music is really good and doesn't sound annoying. This is great since the whole game is just seeing your slot machine and icons. The main thing about this one is finding synergy and trying to earn the most possible. Some strategies are very weak and some icons can remove other icons to clean out your slot machine as well. It gets hard mid game and is hard to beat the current EA stopping point. Once you beat it, it turns into endless mode, which is very hard. I like this game although I do hope by the time it releases there are a lot more icons, items and challenges. It's very straightforward and frankly some of the icons are just terrible and should be rarely chosen. There needs to be more balancing overall. A fun game that you should likely wait for release. 7.5/10 and excited for when it releases.

Just saw the Overfall revocation and read the disclosures. Not sure what they intended to get out of this. Even if they did lose money, it was their fault for crediting an enormous 30,000 keys to a dubious publisher without receiving any monetary compensation up front, not ours. Incomprehensible how they believed this was a smart move, especially after three years allegedly without payment.

It's been a decade since Steam keys were available en masse via bundling websites. Devs really need to learn about previous fiascos before making messes of their companies. Game looks pretty meh as it is, can't imagine this will help it any.

BTW random tidbit but when a game gets DLC or an expansion or something like that and you haven't played it a while it feels like climbing a mountain doesn't it? I sucked at Monster train in my 2 runs playing the new clan (they feel weird haha), and really sucked in Binding of Isaac. I feel the shots are very quick. I even put down the difficulty to Hard, but yeah I'm sucking. It will take me a bit to get used to these games again. The problem of going back to games after a while, which is why DLC/Expansions should be released earlier in a games cycle to hopefully circumvent the problem.

This is the case with every instance of non-paying publishers/distributors.

It's like they think people will be "ohhh... sucks that they got scammed... I'm going to buy the game again on steam so they get money!"

Devs would always benefit more by putting out a sob story saying "hey... we got scammed by our publisher :( But we realize it's not your guy's fault, so we're not going to revoke any keys... BTW, here's our newest DLC/Game!"

Doing something like this would get people to do sympathy buys of DLC/games and spread the news about the good guy dev doing what's right and taking the hit which would result in more sympathy buys and positive review bombs.

I've seen similar things with other games... one where the dev hosted a torrent for the full game (Darkwood) for people who couldn't afford to buy it and another who refused Epic game's exclusivity deal (Darq). I saw a lot of people SAY they were buying the games just to support "good guy devs".

I think the other thing is: they tend to make DLC's purposely way more difficult. Their fans are after these, so...they make sure they punish them a bit (make it tougher) to give it more of a challenge; and some of these DLC's just ain't that long content-wise so they are trying to pad them out a bit by tossing so many high-level enemies at you and make the bosses way more difficult.

Literally, Control's Foundation DLC throws more enemies - and more difficult ones - at you, at once. AWE is tough here and there - but my God, it's final boss is down-right brutal, cheap, and difficult. Sure, a lot of Control's bosses are tough enemies - but this final fight in AEW takes the damn cake.

Take on the Nuka World DLC in Fallout 4. This whole thing is just tough - prepare to die tons & tons.

First off, running the Gauntlet section and its boss fight (the entrance and long part, before you get to the actual Nuka-World park) are down-right tough. Gauntlet ain't easy, as you have tons of enemies; and damn turrets and traps to deal with. That boss is hard, as you need to stun him w/ water gun to stop the protection shield and then have to destroy a dude who does lots of damage that's also wearing a damn Power Suit - a lot of exploding equipment (mines and grenades) is a must here.

Once in the park - it don't get any easier either. The robot section & the bottling plant areas are down-right brutal, which lots of enemies are tosses at you; and they're often down-right brutal enemies. Make sure you're high-leveled, going here. The robot areas are really tough, so...make sure you wear your Power Armor; and that still don't make it easy at all; it's still tough - they do tons of damage w/ their laser, grenades, and whatever else; and they often explode, which can also damage you. Mirelurks and enemies of that sort are in the bottling plant - so be ready to don't blow ammo when they ain't got their mouths or shell open - so you can finally do damage to them; as you're best off tossing grenade, mines, or anything that explodes. The kiddie amusement park part - yeah, good luck there, too...as that whole area's loaded w/ radiation to drain your health and max-health bar (which you'll need to keep recovering your total health bar w/ RadAway, and RadX) - so make sure you have tons of RadAway, RadX and any other poison/radiation recovering stuff; Stimpaks (and any other health recovering stuff); Buffout and stuff of that sort - as now you have to deal w/ lots of Feral Ghouls too.

Joke's on them; in another couple of decades, I'll be dead

Some devs just need to realize their four plus year old games are bundle fodder... and, quite frankly, was bundle fodder on the day it was released.  Don't get into bed with a publisher and then bemoan it years after the fact if they devalue your game.  Your game would be devalued, anyway.  Unlike art (paintings, sculptures, etc.) videos games do not appreciate with time.  They depreciate.  Rapidly.

Go make another game to generate revenue instead of desperately clinging to the same game years and years after its release.

By the same token, if you DO decide to bundle your game, don't come back later and throw a pity party over how it's devalued and now there's grey market keys and yadda yadda.  It's not 2012 any longer, everyone has known what happens to bundled games for over ten years now.  Plus, no one is going to G2A to buy your shitty four year old indie game anyway.

Oh, man, Isaac's been brutal. I can't tell if I've gotten that much worse or if the game has gotten that much harder. I'm currently on a losing streak over 60 although that streak probably started a long time ago. I started my first game with the expansion on hard and was immediately like I need to work up to this. I've since done a bunch of runs on normal and don't think I'm anywhere near ready to try out hard, especially since I think they made the jump to hard even harder.

They did balance a ton of items so some of the weakest items are decent now and the best items are worse than they used to be. There's also lots of other small changes that can make things harder or easier such as the skull doors taking into account your blue and black hearts now too.

My losing streak is now 19. Playing on hard, but yeah I may tune it down a little too. I feel like the shots are way faster and the enemies stick to you like glue. I haven't played in many months but it's brutal. Monster Train I'm starting to get my mojo back, but yeah it's a tough game regardless of DLC or not.

Bah, you stopped playing Monster Train? Thats crazy talk. The new DLC is okay. I think I'm more of a fan of some of the base changes they made to some cards.

It's not a placebo effect, the enemy shot speed in Repentance is significantly faster. Lots of tougher room layouts as well and just in general more difficult enemies.

Not gonna lie, and this is coming from someone with 1800+ hours in Rebirth and its expansions: I bought the DLC on launch day, played an hour, and refunded it. There's some really cool stuff in there from what little I've played and the videos/streams I've watched, but a whole bunch of stuff got nerfed and made harder that really didn't need to be. I'll probably buy it again at some point in the future but I've got other stuff on my plate and I'm in no mood to deal with the game at the moment.

I find the new clan one of the weakest honestly. I'm getting used to them, but not my favorites so far. Think my fave is still the Stygian. I do love nuking things with spells and frostbite is one of the better abilities.

If you want the DLC it is a great deal, yes. I picked it up myself.
Works for me... Hopefully I get to it. (I've been doing better.)

Anyhow, the game I've been playing the most of late, TheHunter Call of the Wild, released dogs this week. Its a bloodhound, so it tracks blood from wounded animals. Its sort of useful, but at the same time, other dogs would have been more useful. Like a retriever for ducks and birds that I shoot but cannot find without a ten minute search. Sadly, they released it before a holiday and dropped in a bug that mislabels Bronze as silver, silver as gold, and gold as platinum. (It doesn't really change the gameplay but your stats will be inflated quite quickly. I have a 130 hours and have killed two platinum. Probably 50 golds. So, yeah, quite the boost. No hope of a fix as they departed for the long holiday weekend. Which is great! I just question why release this now? (Their track record of non bug releases isn't that great btw.)

All thats fine as Outriders released this week. I'm enjoying it but getting my ass kicked. The world tier climbs as your character levels... which you can turn down but it also gives big bonuses so I've been really stubborn too reduce it. I like the system, its really well done, and the auto looting should be looked at by any loot games in the future. Still enjoying the story. There's something about humans just being our own worst enemy that I'm drawn too. (Looks like I might have been suffering really bad RNG. I got my first epic and Its become much easier to handle but you still have to play smart.)

Off topic... The new Godzilla vs Kong movie is out. It looks awesome but whats not so awesome... Why isn't the original King Kong vs Godzilla movie not up for sale digitally anywhere? (seems like someone dropped the ball big time.)

It might have been down for a bit. I used it before my post but its back up now.
Thanks. I noticed that the game Salt is on sale for $1.49 on Steam. I've had it on my wish list for about a year, and Isthereanydeal confirms that this is the game's lowest price.

Also, Steel Rats is free on GOG now as well (it was already free on Steam).

Got excited for Salt and went to buy it, but realized it's already in my Library, so now I have no interest in playing it. So...

Thanks.

Thanks alot.

I’m really enjoying Outriders ... way more engaging for me than something like Gears of War or Anthem because it has a little bit of a Mass Effect rpg feel to it. Being able to talk with people and read back story through journals helps flesh out the world and the loot drop mechanic makes it feel a bit like Diablo. Overall I could see myself getting really hooked to this game, the start was a bit rough but as you level up and get more powers I can see it being pretty awesome.

I used to be obsessed with Binding of Isaac Rebirth but I feel like the game has become shittier with each new expansion. I was going to pass on the latest one but I went to the Steam store page and saw the new bundle and they suckered me in with this amazing deal:

Buy this bundle to save 0% off the 1 items you don't yet have!

Can't say no to that!

I like some of the new items but the new balance is bad for sure. Some guys feel way too tanky on hard and the shot speed is kind of ridiculous for some enemies when Binding of Isaac movement is floatier cause it's an old game. There is some big negatives that they need to release a balance patch for. I actually had a win or 2, but it required getting ridiculous items, which usually before I can get by OK and maybe not win on crappier items, but yeah not amazing. I'll give my mini impressions of it, Hadean Tactics and Arcanium soon. I believe that's all the EA rogue-lite games I have, so I'm not buying anymore!

Just got an email informing me of a replacement Overfall key from Fanatical.
Kudos to Fanatical. It wasn't their fault but they stepped in anyway to resolve the issue.

As for the moronic devs who thought revoking keys from paying customers was a good way of sticking it to the publisher, I think I speak for everyone when I say:
