Welcome to the Xbox Deals and Discussion thread.

General info
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console. Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work. Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold. You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold. Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

  • All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every Tuesday.
  • ALL OFFERS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE! No information within this thread can or should be construed as accurate (or still valid), therefore ...
  • Always verify Xbox Live Marketplace prices before your purchase!
  • Spend wisely, have fun, and enjoy!

Game Pass potential departure dates

Last updated - 2024-05-02
What is this?
Game prices in the Xbox store have a UTC end date associated with them. These dates generally fall into 5 categories :
  1. The item is currently on sale. These are usually the weekly sale items that end Tuesday mornings at 09:59:59 UTC.
  2. The item will go on sale, usually within 2-3 weeks. These are usually set to switch at 23:59:59 UTC, like the weekly sale on Monday evenings. Some of the major annual sales (Spring, Summer, Black Friday, Holiday) start on Thursday evening UTC, and some times appear to be random.
  3. The item is on Game Pass and is not currently or going to be on sale in the next few weeks. Third party games generally cluster around 09:59:59 UTC on the 1st and 16th of each month. Currently, at least one game is associated with every 1st and 16th through January 2025. The dates then spread out, ending with Human Fall Flat on July 1, 2028.
  4. First party and EA Play titles are farther out, starting in 2049, with many in 2799 and 9998.
  5. No date - some items do not have a price and so don't have a date. If the item is part of a bundle that has a price, the date from the bundle is used.
The list below uses the dates associated with games on Game Pass and EA Play. Time stamps in red are the regular Game Pass departure times and titles in red are confirmed to be leaving, either from Microsoft's regular news postings or by devs / publishers. Items available through Game Pass Core, currently on sale or not available for purchase are also color coded.

The date associated with a Game Pass game is not a guarantee it will leave on that date, but since March 2023 when the price data started getting analyzed, every game that's left Game Pass had been flagged as leaving on that date. It's given a number of people an extra heads up on the generally 2 week notice Microsoft provides.

If you have any questions about the list, please ask in the thread.

I know all this is upsetting Xbox fans but I guess I see it differently. We get the first party studio games Day One on GamePass and a year earlier. PlayStation gets the sloppy seconds a year later and has to pay full price the game.

Money comes into Microsoft to support making more, and hopefully increasingly better, games to Xbox with a year exclusivity and GamePass. Also can help bring more good third party games Day One to GP without having to raise our sub fees.

Seems like there’s good that can come of this. Even if Xbox loses a bit of its identity in the process, there’s still plenty of reasons to have an Xbox and GamePass IMO.

I honestly don’t care that much as long as Xbox keeps making consoles. If they go full their party, then I’ll care.

If their services being good (GamePass and the general feature set) is all the Xbox has over Sony, then the "party" will be over. Having literally zero exclusives will kill the Xbox console eventually. Big games like Starfield or Elder Scrolls will have big Gamepass numbers and then huge sales numbers on Playstation.

A year exclusivity and GamePass is enough for me to keep wanting an Xbox console. First on Xbox. Day One on GamePass.

I will say with the dam breaking on this, Microsoft needs to say something. They just can’t keep letting story after story pop up.

One thing I have noticed is that with the exception of Sea of Thieves, all of the games involved have been Bethesda. Haven’t heard Forza, Gears or other original MS games. I know there were stories about Bethesda having wanted Starfield to be on PS5 even after the merger. They may be stirring the pot on this whole thing too?

Some bigger journalists are comparing this to Sony releasing their games on PC (delayed of course). In my opinion, Xbox exclusives going to PS is WAY different, mainly because I don’t think Sony would ever do that with their flagship IPs.

Honestly, it does make me question my investment into Xbox. I own PS5 and XSX, but if I can get everything on PS5 or PC, not sure why I’d continue to invest in Xbox.

I don't think the other games you mentioned would matter right now, the the test would be the next entires. I would actually expect Flight Simulator before these games. Plus, Bethesda and crew were already making PS5 games until recently.

Forza - Gran Turismo exists, I think a lot of diehards wouldn't move over

Halo - basically on life support. It's getting updated frequently but I doubt it's making money. This is probably why they're changing battlepasses to Operations that come out faster and don't include currency. Master Chief Collection would make more sense really.

Gears - basically the same, except the live support is already dead. Years old game that did OK.

Sea of Thieves is the one truly successful live service game Microsoft has.

Wouldn’t change anything for me. I still get the games I love sooner and on GamePass. Why would I want to wait longer and spend more money buying full priced games on PS5? Makes no sense to me.

I’d stick with playing Xbox mostly and use my PS5 for the occasional exclusive I want to play there.

It should not be a shock that selling games is more sustainable than having your big budget game release day one on a subscription service. The current model is not working. If it was they would not need to look outside their ecosystem for their financial needs.

I'm good with persona's, MLB the show plus a number of day one games on other platforms. I used the money saved from buying day one console games to build a gaming PC to play games not on xbox

IMO a console with no big exclusives has one foot in the grave. News like this can kill the average consumer's confidence in buying this or Microsoft's next console (why buy an Xbox for Indy when I can get the console that has Final Fantasy/Wolverine/God of War and Xbox games at a later date). Game Pass appeals to enthusiasts like us that play a lot of games but it doesn't seem to influence console sales much. Series sales are lagging behind Xbox One (https://www.vgchartz.com/article/459677/xbox-series-xs-vs-xbox-one-sales-comparison-december-2023). PS5 is selling like crazy worldwide and the Switch 2 will probably break the internet when it launches. Shrinking console sales would be the path to Microsoft ditching Xbox hardware.

I buy a lot of stuff on Xbox because of reward points and Gameflip. If I wasn't getting such great deals I would be buying more games on the PlayStation side with Xbox being a Game Pass machine.

Well, as of now I’m still happy with my Xbox and have no reason to want to ditch it. And, honestly, I have more important things to worry about.

I'm happy with my Series S/X as well. I just hope it's not the last real console generation we get from Microsoft. Seeing lots of salt from people that feel like they got burnt by buying an Xbox this holiday.

Saw this on another forum. Third party Xbox consoles?

If their services being good (GamePass and the general feature set) is all the Xbox has over Sony, then the "party" will be over. Having literally zero exclusives will kill the Xbox console eventually. Big games like Starfield or Elder Scrolls will have big Gamepass numbers and then huge sales numbers on Playstation.
Sega anyone?

Xbox has been my main console since the original came out. I rarely play my Switch, have zero desire or inclination for a PS5 and sold my PS4. I know Sony has some big name First party titles but except for Ratchet and Clank, I don’t care about any of them. I like the Xbox interface, the ecosystem, the store and the controllers much more than any other system. I’m not fanboying for Xbox because they do have faults (lack of great 1st party games) but it’s the system i get all my gaming needs from it.

Kind of funny that Sony tried to kill the Activision buyout because Call of Duty would only on Xbox.

Speaking of which, are they ever adding those games to Game Pass?

Wouldn’t change anything for me. I still get the games I love sooner and on GamePass. Why would I want to wait longer and spend more money buying full priced games on PS5? Makes no sense to me.

I’d stick with playing Xbox mostly and use my PS5 for the occasional exclusive I want to play there.
I do not understand why anyone would care if a game they can play on Xbox is on another console. How does that make any difference to your life if more people can play a game you can? Other than losing a talking point in a fanboy fight over which console is better it makes no difference. As long as it is on Game Pass still I do not care what else it is on.

I am also curious as to when all of the Blizzard/Activision games will be on Game Pass. ALL Xbox game studio games are supposed to be on Game Pass day one. Where are they, Phil?

I just wonder if Xbox exits the physical console market, what the next steps are. Game Pass is cool, but it’s not free, and it can be pretty expensive (for non-CAG).

This news probably won’t make me ditch Xbox, but I’ll be more hesitant to invest in new games vs. PC/PS5. Gameflip does help as well lol

As far as COD, there’s some talk that the games won’t even come to Game Pass now. Again, Xbox hasn’t said anything, so it’s all leaks/speculation. Hopefully Phil or someone clears things up this week.

I honestly believe that's what they're going to do. Put out the mid gen refresh and end this gen. And next gen go the route of Sega and just publish/develop stuff. It makes sense. And they keep their gamepass and make stuff day one on it and have a staggered release on other platforms.

I think the real wars won't be console themselves, but actual digital services - i.e. Epic, Steam, GOG, PSN, Blizzard BattleNet, Xbox PC App, etc etc.

I even see PSN service truly at some point coming to PC also, similar to a Steam-like type of app. Most consoles are x86/x64 AMD hardware now since PS4 era anyways. Probably easy to port stuff around the major platforms (PS4/5; Xbox 1 and Xbox Series consoles; PC; etc etc).

It's not like game development's cheap either. Got to hit as many markets eventually, if you're said game company like Microsoft and Sony & are throwing $100m-315m on game development and marketing in the AAA and AAAA space.

Not that long ago, Microsoft stopped w/ Xbox PC exclusives on their store and we've been seeing their stuff pop-up on Steam on PC. Probably will see more of that, too.

Plus, you got Steam-Deck (Linux-based out-the-box) and its wannabe's (ROG Ally, Lenovo Go, etc - in which those are Microsoft Windows-based) too and plenty of gaming laptops out there. More places to game, more or less.

I am not the kind of person who will buy a PC to game, so unless MS is putting GP on the PS5 there is still a reason for me to buy a Xbox console unless they plan on pushing GP as a cloud-based platform.

Edit: If they go cloud focused then I am out.

Me neither, I want something I can plop my butt down on a couch turn on and play for a few hours. I don't want to have to worry about whether my pc can run this game, or if I'll have to buy a video card or more ram to be able to play this game, or tweak settings and sacrifice different graphics setting to make a game run on my computer.

For those that collect achievements and a rewards at the same time today is the day in the month where you don't get a reward for unlocking an achievement. Therefore, if you have a streak go back to your non-gamepass backlog !

It'd be hard to do that without abandoning the XBL ecosystem entirely unless they added more PC support for things like 360 backwards compatibility. I expect they also make decent revenue from platform holder cuts of DLC, digital currency, etc and going totally thr way Sega would nerf that.

I've said it before but I think they might go halfway like with Valve and the Steam Deck. Hardware that's optimized for the platform and ecosystem but not in a generational competition with Sony or Nintendo.

If they did that and just sold hardware directly online, it cuts down a ton on distribution costs since they wouldn't be paying for brick and mortar distribution and everything that entails. Valve's lack of presence at Target, Best Buy, and even Amazon hasn't hurt sales one bit, which might not have been true 10 years ago.

This model would support third party hardware, potentially, like if Logitech wanted to make a super premium handheld with a Series S inside and an OLED screen. Make it part of the SDK and developers can update games easily for hardware support, kind of like we saw with Gears 5 from X1 to Series X.

Shit, I'd buy one.

I don't care if some Xbox games go multiplatform, but if ALL do then the console has no real reason to exist. I agree that the services are better on Xbox for the most part, but they are not so good that I wouldn't switch to PSN if I really needed to. Backwards compatibility is basically the strongest win on the service front and it only goes so far. It'll mean a definite shift away from their own consoles, and with no box the ecosystem loses a lot of appeal.

I don't see third-party consoles happening. That's pretty expensive to get into unless they're basically only changing the case, and it has been a disaster in the past, CDi, Steam Machines.

Supposedly Phil Spencer will be on CNBC’s Closing Bell today to address rumors and Xbox strategy. Seems like they could release a statement beforehand to set expectations.

Report is, it is all. We're talking about Halo, Gears, Hellblade, Blade, etc. They lose money on each console they sold and were losing a lot more during the holidays to get sell numbers. The Series consoles had deep discount that didn't even helped them with meeting their goal and their console sales outlook for this year is predicted to decline even more from last year.

The upcoming Indiana Jones is rumored too.

Apparently Xbox being on CNBC today was fake news as well, per Jez Cordon.

Microsoft has EXCELled (get it?) as a software/cloud services company. Xbox hardware was a detour and has been struggling along with the Surface hardware line. I think there is value in having hardware that you can optimize to work with your software but in the future that may be more a smarter controller as opposed to a box.

It doesn't make sense to deliberately restrict your software customer base to certain platforms. Doubly so when you just spent $70 billion on gaming software.

Funny thing is, nothing will actually change for Xbox users. Play the same games. Get day one titles on GamePass. While other platforms get to play the same games at a later date at $70 a pop. Which sounds like a better experience?

I don't see "day one" as much of an advantage anymore. For any widely anticipated game, day 1 is more like day 8 because you must buy the deluxe version to play day 1. Half the time early adopters get the pleasure of working through bugs and networking issues.

Well, everyone can do you. I see no reason to jump ship myself. I love GamePass. And, yes, playing something like Hi-Fi Rush or Forza Horizon 5 a year before someone else and without having to set aside $70 for it is a big deal to me. Not every game is a bug riddled mess. But if it’s not for you, not going to stop you from running to PlayStation.

Heck, getting to play Persona 3 Reload (a $70 game) on Day One on GamePass was awesome and know some friends that were jealous. So it’s not even just first party.

Plenty of reasons for me. Not to mention just liking the console experience.

I sadly agree with this (pun and all).
  • Microsoft has not been able to make ground after multiple acquisitions in the current console market
  • They now own some of the biggest franchises in all of gaming (this is not Sega 2.0)
  • If Xbox exclusives aren't enough to incentivize customers with console purchases, then finding other ways to sell those games is the logical next step.
    • One can argue they haven't pushed exclusives hard enough, but it seems like MS has made Game Pass their end goal in all of this (subscription software).
    • The biggest mistake here from my perspective is that everything has been treated like a timed exclusive. We already had Halo/Gears/Forza, and instead of adding to that roster they are making all these new purchases timed exclusives that will show up after a year or so on PS/Switch
      • This means that day 1 hype is your only selling point. "Here, have a buggy Bethesda launch game day 1 on Game Pass or enjoy it when it's patched on PS5 in a year" isn't a great selling point.
  • It's a shame we're here, because we finally seem to have a year to be proud of for exclusives (Indy, CoD?, Avowed, Hellblade 2, etc.)
  • If it was my company this would have been my make or break year as on-boarding these acquisitions takes time (and Acti/Blizz hasn't even had any benefits yet).
  • I don't want to see Xbox go away and doubt they will (MS has a 3 trillion dollar market cap), especially since I have such a huge library and achievement history. However, some sort of digital/streaming limited hardware future may unfortunately be the only one we have

Nothing changes for now. End of next-gen and it's probably over. No hardware. Possible policy changes, like maybe games are ONLY available through GamePass.

Really, once Phil is out we might be doomed anyways. Dude is 56 and rich AF, he could retire any time.

Which is the plan I think. Think about all the recent moves: discontinuing physical games, studio acquisitions, pushing GamePass subs, etc. They want out of hardware, always have and I think this time they mean it. If Sony refuses GPU on their console again, they're fools. Time will tell, but the worst of this would mean needing to deal with their god-awful formfactor consoles. At least maybe PS6 won't look like a portal turret?

Were Hi-Fi Rush and Forza Horizon 5 buggy messes at launch? No. They were fantastic experiences. Whether a game releases in a good state can apply to any game or system. There’s been timed exclusives on PlayStation that were big deals. But suddenly all games coming to Xbox are complete crap on Day One? Whatever…

Go pay $70 a year later and I’ll be happy I played it earlier on GamePass.

Ding, ding. GamePass exclusives are exactly what the plan would be. If they can make deals with Sony and Nintendo for GamePass, then they wouldn't be in breach of contracts like CoD being available on those platforms. Trojan horse in a sense. The more info we get on this, the more it sounds like a genius plan. TBH, I hope it's true.

A bit too late for me to jump ship now mid-gen.

Most of my gaming library is on Xbox and I have 100s of thousands of MS Rewards points to spend on 3rd party games plus Game Pass Ultimate though late 2027.

Until then, I'll enjoy gaming on my Series X and using Game Pass (essentially for free) until the end of this gen, then see what hardware options are available in 2027.

Not trying to raise tensions here as I think all of us have some pretty strong feelings on what's going on. I am typically way behind in my backlog and maybe play 1 or 2 games per generation at launch, but that's just the way I play. I am currently playing GTA V and then Witcher 3 is up after that so I can finally say I've played them.

My point is that Nintendo and Sony generally don't have a quality issue with first party releases. Over at Microsoft we have to hold our breath at times and wonder "is this going to be another Redfall"? Microsoft has to fight an army of trolls when Starfield isn't a 10/10 across the board and God of War or Spider-Man are. This all goes to hurt the brand and leads to less customers. It's not necessarily fair as it seems Sony in particular never gets criticized for something like extremely repetitive gameplay, but that's where we're at.

If Microsoft is going to compete in this market with "Day 1 on Game Pass" being the key selling feature, it puts a particular emphasis on releasing a great product day 1. Here's hoping we have some great examples of that this year with a great looking Game Pass lineup
