Skyward Sword was better than Twilight Princess at least, sure the bird travel thing was kind of lame but it sure beat yet another big and boring empty world like OoT, Twilight Princess was just OoT's big field with an unnecessary maze on top.

Wii software sales show how casual its user base was. How does Mario Galaxy and Smash Bros only sell 12 million copies to 100 million users? Only 9 games on this console surpassed 10m sales and among them are Wii Sports, Wii Sports Resort, Wii Play, Wii Fit and Wii Fit Plus. I'd wager at least 75% of Wii owners have never owned another gaming system in their lives.

Oh no not the casuals they smell like deodorant 🤮 get out of my hobby grandma!

It was short term success that almost sank their hardware business long term. The 3DS was also struggling out of the gate which led to emergency price cuts. Going hybrid with the Switch was basically their hail mary. Had it not been the hit it was then Nintendo would probably be publishing games on PlayStation right now.

This is such a textbook example of the pot calling the kettle black, it’s not even funny. Based on the most objective measure we have, average user and critic review scores, you are expressing opinions that not many are going to agree with. Thats fine, but criticizing someone disagreeing with the notion that Muramasa is the best game of all time, by calling that disagreement a bad take, come on…I like the game too, but a 79 average user rating on metacritic with 111 reviews compared to Ocarina of Time having a 91 with 11,000. Not to mention it’s 99 critic review score.

There’s nothing objective about an argumentum ad populum. OOT isn’t special anymore. It was revelatory in 1998, but as I already explained, games that set the standards for a genre are pretty much never going to age especially gracefully, since games in the genre that come after are going to learn those lessons and build on them. OOT is not a bad game, but it’s just not on par with the 3D Zeldas that have come since without the aid of nostalgia goggles.

I don’t know how anyone was able to play OoT on an n64. I tried to, but the textures were so muddy that I really had a hard time navigating. But where I was totally able to play it, and really loved it at the time, was on the GameCube. There was a preorder disc that you could get with Wind Waker. Finally you could actually tell a tree from a rock from a wall

I don't think they really upgraded the graphics or improved anything for the Gamecube preorder disc version it was just a straight port as far as I remember, are you sure you didn't just play it on a different television that was better suited for it?

Man I miss when preordering games got you something worthwhile.... that, uh, one time!

Million sellers tier are a niche number of titles. That generally come from established ips. Outside of pack ins most games will NEVER sell 50% of a consoles install base. as not everyone likes the same game. Hell I'd be surprised if there's games that sold even 10-20%.

But that's also not factoring in rentals, sharing, digital, buying used.

Mario 64 sold 12 million to 32 million users. Mario Galaxy sold 12 million to 100 million users. I think that attach rate paints the picture of how many non-gamers had a Wii.

Just look how well software is doing on the Switch. Franchises like Fire Emblem and Kirby are reaching heights that seemed impossible. That's what happens when actual gamers buy your console and want content to play. Most Wii owners just played Wii Sports for a day and then threw it in a box to collect dust.

The graphics weren’t different, but the resolution was improved, 640x480p vs the original 320x240i. Do you count progressive scan when calculating resolution? It was 8x the resolution on GC if you do, or still 4x even if not. It was quite literally a game changer for me

Gotta love a longer Dunkey video. I'm not a huge racing/Mario Kart fan, barely touched MK8, but man, I would definitely buy that soundtrack whenever (if ever) it's released separately.

It also seems to do open world correctly; it's supposed to be a toy box. I get what it adds to something like Forza and Test Drive, but I'm a bigger fan of Burnout Paradise (I miss that series...). As an open world exploration and trick machine, something Dunkey is known to love, watching him attempt that one Beanstalk Track trick was fun. That's the sort of stupidity I get sucked into.

I'm too competitive to make something like MK fun to play online...

... this is how you post a video. With context for folks to determine if they want to watch it. Be the change you want...

You're kind of contradicting yourself there. Fire Emblem Three Houses only sold between 4-5 million copies. Kirby and the Forgotten Land sold less than 8 million. Mario Odyssey sold less than 30 million, but against Switch hardware sales of about 152 million, that's in line with Mario Galaxy on the Wii. Everything else that isn't Pokémon, Mario Kart or Zelda BOTW/TOTK sold around or less than Fire Emblem. So by your metric, actual gamers aren't buying the Switch either if they didn't buy the Wii.

Finally someone with a brain that also thinks this. I have more Wii games than N64 games, than Gamecube games, than PS3 games. Only the xbox 360 beats it in terms of great games on a system. Wii truly was a fantastic system but people dismiss it because WAGGLE CONTROLS MAKE MY BONES HURT!!!!!! and all the shovelware it has because everyone was trying to capitalize on its success.

Noticed in the controller screen that my right switch 2 joycon is not showing as fully charged even though it’s been charging for days. Anyone else?

Controllers are fully updated.

Fire emblem they barely supported prior to awakening on the 3ds. where they went to the opposite of the spectrum. They not only fully supported it but they did lots of free cameo unit dlc, and the eshop credit if you bought it and smt4.

Most of the series remained unlocalized until 7 on the gba.

Let's also note that only 3 houses did well while engage (rightfully) didn't do so hot. God that game was so cringe.

i still don't understand the argument that the REAL gamers didn't buy a Wii just because some grandma bought one too. Are "real gamers" really that petty and superficial as a demographic?

How did it hurt Nintendo somehow that the Wii was successful?

Just because Nintendo made boneheaded decisions during that era and was lazy at putting out games toward the end of the cycle doesn't mean their slump during the 3DS and Wii U era had something to do with Wii's success with people who otherwise do not play video games. Nintendo makes boneheaded decisions time and time again and tends to get lazy about first party game output at the end of every system they make

The Wii just isn't that special. It's fine, it has a fine enough library of unique games for "real gamers" to be interested in owning the system, and it's fine that your grandma bought a Wii too. Keeping Nintendo afloat for another decade to be able to put out the Switch and get lucky with Animal Crossing and the Switch tax to keep them afloat for another decade is fine too.

Hopefully Nintendo's luck will last.

Once

Once again, the argumentum ad populum is a logical fallacy, there is literally nothing objective about it.
Fair enough, and true, if I was saying your statement was false. I’ve said multiple times the opposite, it‘s valid as your own opinion. Whose take is bad or not though, you probably got at least 100 to 1 against you based on those numbers, so do not be surprised if you get some disagreement. I like Xenogears a lot, but I understand it’s just a niche game in a particular genre. I wouldn’t say it’s better than anything on multiple classic systems, that would be foolish.

Xenogears could have more widespread popularity if it could be rereleased or remastered, but Square is run by a bunch of knuckleheads who lost the freaking source code for the game, not to mention some likely licensing hiccups.

While in the walmart where my Switch 2 was bought, they finally got the new display case for switch 2 systems (the old one moved to the xbox section as they deleted about 1/3 of all xbox stuff for OG switch). Nicely they had Pro 2 controllers in stock. Maybe stores will get some next week when they give online Walmart+ subscribers the option to order online? Seems like the store is properly setup now. Price tags for the switch 2 in the case as well.

Not sure what this mess is that I stumbled into here. Something about some reality show nonsense I've never watched and a wii game that someone likes more than games on older systems. No minds were changed... seemed kind of pointless.

I played Mario Kart World tonight for about 4 hours. Mostly just offline single player GP (I have two or three more cups to three star) and then some free roam and Pblock missions as well as found a few ? blocks. I unlocked more characters which is cool as I didn't think there were many left I didn't have. Also some alt versions as well as more karts. It's a fun game.

Try restarting your system
Thanks! FYI - full power down and restart didn't seen to do it but detaching the joy con, turning off the joy con, re-syncing the joy con, then reattaching the joy con and charging on the dock seems to have fixed it.

I'm no gamergater obsessive but professional video game critics are a joke. God Hand 3/10, Paper Mario 2 6.75...

They are also untrustworthy because of the practice of publishers giving them copies to review for free with the implication that they be as charitable as possible toward the subject.

User scores can be somewhat useful in that they can sometimes be helpful to avoid completely hot garbage, but games do still get review bombed for the dumbest of reasons. You have to look deeper into the low and 0 scores.

The tiny discount is commonplace. The ones you want to look for are when they have 20% off or higher. That's when you stock up.

Yeah, that last 20% deal at Newegg is when I jumped and stocked up. 10% being more common at least helps during the gap if credit is running low and there's a game you want now.

Best Buy is getting a Switch 2 restock today. Online only.

Oh, this might be good.

In the Switch 2 preorder thread, someone mentioned their local Target had a restock. Walmart is mid week giving subscribers the ability to order one online. Looks like Round 2 is about to hit.

BB updated their site from earlier today saying "Sold out" on the switch 2 bundle to "Coming Soon".

I think I'll keep the app open on my phone so I remember to check.

Yeah it's up, but not for shipping. I'd have to drive an hour. I can wait. Still, maybe this is a good sign for the other stores getting them and Walmart will have some in store this week as well.

Seems you don't have a lot near by best buys?

I felt relaxed one it was in my cart and realized I could change pick up locations from there. I tried a few different locations for pick up and the dates vary wildly. I chose to drive 15 minutes to pick up in a little less than a week (Saturday), instead of waiting until a week from Tuesday to pick up from a store just a few minutes from my house.

Yeah, I'm pretty rural. We have 2 Walmarts, 1 GS, and ... the internet. Neighboring counties are mostly just walmart stores and maybe another GS or two. Which I don't mind going a county over since I can usually do that in an hour round trip. But to drive an hour one way... I can wait. Despite being rural and missing most of the bigger stores, we actually have a regular indoor mall. Which is a rarity these days. It has change a lot over the years, but still seems to be thriving. Plus there's a regular old timey downtown area with shops and a dozen oudoor shopping centers. We have a pretty large number of restaurants. The main thing, the cost of living is just so much cheaper. I have a pretty huge house which I recently paid off. It would easily be 3x the cost an hour down the road.... and probably 6x the cost in California.

OLED coming tomorrow. Hoping for a smooth transfer between the Lite and the OLED. 🤞

The profile transfers are pretty straight forward. My kids did that when they got their own switch systems.

The main reason I didn't do that with my Switch 2 (or my switch lite when I got that), I don't play any of the games with restricted save transfers. So saves are in the cloud... easy enough to start fresh and not have "everything" installed.
