So, has anyone gotten this game yet?

I picked it up during the sale at Fry's today, and so far, it's kind of hard to adjust from the cartoony concept that is Tales of Symphonia, to a darker, gloomier RPG like Baten Kaitos; it's more like Final Fantasy than anything.

So far I'm having fun messing around with the Magnus cards (heart of the entire item system) and trying out different combos.

Has anyone else played this yet? Any opinions?
I really want it, but given the number of games I have to play I can't buy it in good conscience.
Me too.

it has a card abtteling system? Damn i was hoping it wouldnt be like lost kingdoms. Ive been anticipating this game since i saw it in a "Cube" magazine previews disk. Ill rent it and if i dont like it the money stays for RE4
It looked good, but the whole card battling system usually throws me off.
The card battle system actually isn't as bad as it may seem. Each card represents an item, attack, magic, etc. and you use a card to represent what you want to use: if you want to attack, you use an Attack card, etc.

Its not really card battling, all items are just in the form of cards. Not like there are rules of the game, and you get penalized for not following like yugioh type of game.

So, there aren't many cards? Does each character use different cards? If it's not as bad as I thought, I may pick it up at $20.

There's over 1000 cards, so there's a lot of variety in what you can do.
Once I finish all my games, which will take forever, then I'll buy it.
I'll do you one better and pick it up after I finish just half of my unplayed games... which is around 20 right now :?
Is it as good as ToS?
As good as ToS? Well, it's kind of hard to say, as it has its ups and downs in comparison to ToS.

I like BK though; I think it's just as good as ToS.

Now I'm liking the card idea. I'll definitely pick it up for $15. I can't see why everybody loved ToS so much. I think it was alright, but I didn't really enjoy it.

I wanna try their card battle system =T. And ToS is practically one of the few rpg only on GC and it is one pretty good one as I've played so far.. but anyways I'm willing to pick up Baten Kaitos whenever it gets cheap..because I have no money at all x.x

Hm... let me try to put the card battle system into layman's terms.

Alright, you have a "deck" of cards, filled with whatever kinds of cards you want in them (physical attack, defense, healing magic, black magic, etc.). Naturally, each character has a different weapon or style of attacking. The main character, Kalas, uses swords, like almost every RPG main character. Xelha (pronounces "Shella") uses black magic, so she can't use swords.

These cards can be used nearly an infinite amount of times in battle, meaning that you don't have/need "Mana". If you draw the black magic card, you can use it.

Of course, you can use specific cards to create powerful combos, whether it be for offense, defense, healing, etc.

So... here's a visual example.

batensheet.jpg

Now, this would be a typical "hand" for Kalas. At Class 1, Kalas can attack twice in a row (Class 2, 3 times, class 3, 4 times, etc.). So, you would choose the first two Long Swords, and you would attack an enemy. Now, two more cards from your deck would fill those now-blank spaces.

Say the enemy hits Kalas for 40 damage, and you want to heal. You would select the "Lol Banana" and use it on yourself. If you have more than one healing card, you can combo them to heal even more HP.

Is that better? I tried to make it easy. :)

This game is amazing. It seems that whenever reviews deem a story "cliche" and "boring" I fall for it. I'm completely absorbed... and the battle systems becomes to good. This game is amazing!

i'm deep into the game and totally hooked... i'm just totally pissed at this one boss i'm stuck on, he does around 400 - 800 points damage normally (depending on defense) then he casts an attack orb on himself, allowing him to do 800 - 1200 pts damage each time. oh, and he attacks twice per turn... considering the most hp my once character has is like 2000, this makes an extremely difficult battle. but, the game is very good, and there are some unexpected twists, which always makes a cliche story less cliche.

No kidding! This game is great! I've advanced several times further than anticipated.

This game is without a doubt just as good as ToS.

Yes, the voice acting was somewhat poor, and the story doesn't kick in until a bit into the game. Hang in there; it'll be worth your while.

Xehlas voice acting is just plain odd... her voice rises and fall very oddly... thats my only consist voice complaint. That is besides the REDICULOUSLY funny first boss voice (it sounds like a guy pretending to be a ghost). Oh, and lest we not forget how fucking AMAZING that opening movie is. wow. That got me more excited about the game than anything else.

that opening movie gave me chills... i went in expecting awesome CGI cutscenes, and them not being there was my only disappointment with the game.

I'm in exactly the same boat - maybe reviewers complain about the story because they were assigned to play the game rather than choosing to pick it up for themselves. I'm only 5 hours in, and I can't get enough of these battles - they move really quickly and I love being forced to pick cards/moves for defense as well as offense.

Absolutely beautiful game. I HATE card games, but this is by no means a card game. This is easily the prettiest GC game that I have played in some time. I am not a big fan of the story, but it's enough to keep me playing and dominating my playing time. I am enjoying this more than Tales.

I honestly don't understand why it's so hard for localizers to find GOOD voice acters.

They should take lessons from Konami (Metal Gear). Heck, even FFX had decent voice acting. Kinda.

This game has gone from wonderful... to WONDERFULLY WEIRD. The Land of Illusions certainly lives up to its names. I haven't seen towns THIS varied... since... well... ever. If you're looking for something a lil' more interesting in you RPG game worlds. This game is for you. TRUST me.

Very good game, i definately recommend it. Im about 10hrs in and am enjoying the battle system. Took me a bit to get down, but now its no prob.

I dont care for normal card games, but this really isnt one. Dont pass it up just because they use cards.

I am not digging this game. I usually love rpgs, but i just can't get into this. I'm about 2.5 hours in, so I know things haven't really started going. But, I just am flat out not enjoying the battle system.

I'm really ready to trade it in. Should I dump it, or stick with it? What do you guys think?

I've been interested in this game, but I haven't picked it up yet. I think I can hold out until a price drop. Plus, I've got a list of games already that need playing over the Christmas break!

What part are you at? It's hard to get into BK after such different RPGs like ToS, etc..

I had just released the evil spirit thing from the lake (god that thing had horrible voice acting). Then i was in the cliffs. I was only like 2 hours into the game, I know. What else pissed me off was how if you went into a battle because this monster was blocking your way, then you went to the next screen, decided you needed to go back, then that monster would be back there. It made exploration a real chore.

I returned the game and got FF: Dawn of Souls and the Metroid Prime 2 guide. It's disapointing because I actually liked the story. I just couldn't stand the battle mechanics and that's what all the magazine reviewers liked about the game.

Anyway, playing FF: Dawn of Souls is very refreshing. It's nice to get back to the old school turned based battles. Oh, how I missed ye.......

I'm about 11-12 hours into BK right now, and at this point I'd say it's possibly the best RPG I've played this year. The battle system is just amazing, and only gets deeper the more you play. It's a gorgeous game also, and the story, while not groundbreaking, is easily interesting enough to carry the game.

The ONLY negative point imo is the voice acting, but since they give you the option to turn it off it's not that big of a deal.

Oh, Moonguile Forest? On the 2nd screen, I believe? Yes, that's the only place from memory where a monster blocks your path. You shouldn't have returned your game.

Yep, that's it. Maybe I should have stuck it out. But, I have a bunch of A+ titles to play that are sitting on my shelf. I don't have time to spend on something that I wasn't having fun with. Maybe I'll pick it up in the summer when things are a bit slower. It's good to hear that some people are enjoying it the farther they get. I'm very happy with FF:DoS, though.

i love tales of symphonia... and i jsut got Baten Kaitos but i havent started it becuase i jsut got dawn of souls... it looks good. i played the demo at the store. i think ToS looks way better.. it had a great story.. and that is what makes a game for me
i was just wondering how people enjoyed this fighting system
Well, as you can see from my posts above, I didn't like it at all. I thought the battles were slow and boring. I didn't like the Magnus system either. I'm an old school RPG guy, i like it simple and Baten Kaitos' battle system wasn't very intuitive. A lot of people really like it, though. It's much different than ToS, tho. People think just because they both came from Namco that there should be some similarity. They are very different games.

I'm sorry to hear that.

While BK and ToS are different games, it doesn't reduce the quality of BK. As stated before, BK is a high-quality RPG, but is hard to adjust to from ToS, mainly because the battle system is so different.
