Looking to compete again (amateur boxing): Found a gym at last!

As of late, I have been working out hard again and I really want to do something competitive again. I haven't actively competed since 1998 when I was in High School track, and injuries derailed the remainder of my track days. I tore 3 ankle ligaments and I fell into a deep depression (unrelated to track) that lasted a little over a year. In 2000, I was trying to get into wrestling even though I was very out of shape, and I broke 3 bones in my elbow, my wrist, and I tore a muscle in my shoulder.

Since then, I have mainly been competing with myself, playing "lets see how much weight you can lose" games with myself. I see my brothers having success in wrestling, and I miss the competition badly. I have been getting in shape and growing stronger, and my brothers think I should compete again. They are recommending amateur boxing. I love the boxing style workouts (yes, even roadwork) and the thought of it is getting me excited.

The reason I have created this post is because I would like to know if anyone here knows about amateur boxing, and could offer suggestions to someone interested in it.

My friend out in Dallas would sometimes fight in the Toughman contests. You may want to check those out if you are into boxing.

If that interest him, he should come over to my house and let me punch him in the head! Same thing!

I'm starting to realize that, and this guy keeps wanting to punch me in the head. I hope he knows I could knock him on his ass.

I think all that sand in your vagina has taken away your sence of humor. Go down to walmart and buy a douche and get that sand out.

I've done submission wrestling, brazilian jiu-jitsu, and some wrestling, but never boxing. My advice would be to just find a boxing gym nearby, they can definitely help you more than CAG can.

Also try http://www.mma.tv
Yes...Most cheapassgamers are weak, small, and pale....wrong board
Actually, most CAGs aren't small at all. Take bignick for example.

And  at everything bignick has said in this thread. :)

man talk about shitty replys.

Well I can't give you much help with boxing, but from what I hear it's really hard to do. I really do belive that boxing is the most difficult sport there is. I'm sure if you look around you area your going to find some type of boxing gym. I'm sure they can point you in the right direction.

Also if you want to compete I think some type basketball/baseball leauge would be a bit easier to get into. Only because I know boxing is so freaking hard. But if you have your mind set on boxing then good luck.

c'mon guys stop with the flaming. I know what Nick said was kind of funny, but we are trying to cut down on the flame wars here.

Agreed. The guy was asking for advice. There is no need for everyone to practice their comedy rountine at his expense. He did NOTHING to deserve that treatment.

Hey, I know exactly how you feel. I was playing basketball at the JUCO level before I hurt my knee. I was trying to go to a bigger college but it didn't work out since I couldn't run or jump without pain for several years after. It is depressing when you have that drive to compete athletically then it is taken away from you. I don't know much about boxing but I did a little research and this is what I found....

They have info on getting a membership to USA Boxing listed by state. I hope this helps. I really am pulling for you because I still have the desire to compete myself. Good luck to you!

and if you werent such a dick, I would have told you to call your local police station and see if there is a PAL (police athletic league) in the area. The ones where I use to live had boxing rings.
You were the one being a dick to me. Douche cleaning gear? DO you have anything better to do? I did nothing to provoke you. Anyhow, thanks to the people who were kind of to give helpful advice.

Update.

I found a good trainer and I will be attending his gym on Saturday. I'm pretty excited about it, and it is finally going to happen.

That marks the 831 unfunny time you've said that....keep saying it! It may get funny again! Remember, a broken clock is right twice a day!
