Controls and combat had a ton of tweaks and quality of life improvements as well. So I'd place it somewhere in between. It's definitely the definitive experience, in my humble opinion.

As terrible as it was, I think the reboot/remake/whatever that was, was worse. People seem to hate Book of Shadows with a passion, but at least it had some form of a plot and was based upon actual events.
I wish Observer would get a decent patch though. I hit one of the several game-breaking bugs that won't let you progress. I was really enjoying the game up to that point.
