Amazon always uses December 31 as the placeholder date for games where the exact release date is not confirmed (but the year of release is). Once a release date is verified I am sure it will update to that date.

In general I at least try everything for a bit, maybe like an hour or so for most games. There have been many games that have ended up being great that I never would have played if I didn't do that. Spec Ops is a great example of that.
OBVIOUSLY the solution is to buy a Vita ;)
But seriously, I think letting your PS+ account lapse and just sort of keeping track of what is up for free and then not re-upping until there are 2-3 games you want one month is a good strategy. Or maybe they never get you back and you save some coin
