RE4's sound was like that on the PS2 as well. The voices sound downsampled, as you said.

I played through Quest For Glory I (EGA) last year using VDMSound without any problems. I started QFG II as well and that also ran perfectly.

Just to register a dissenting view, I really love the Suikoden series and I haven't even played I or II. Suikoden III is my favorite RPG of all time (except maybe for FF XII). In my experience the games were not particularly short. If you don't feel like playing all of them I'd recommend...
